I'm sort of just about willing to believe that Terry isn't an out-and-out racist in his everyday life and is resorting to racist abuse as a way of unsettling the opposition

You seriously think Terry acts in such a calculating and 'rational' way?

"Hmmm, I know just what would unsettle the opposition the most right now... racist abuse!"

no i can see it being used as - maybe widely accepted as - sledging. if something like that ever did come to light it'd be instructive to see which of the "if you've never played professional football you know nothing" wankers came onside.

My favourite evidence of John Terry leading:

Guess it's worth doing when you're the only white feller between the ball and the goal.

As I said before, the video footage shows nothing but the explanation is bizarre, and at very best garbled. If QPR make a complaint, have to assume he's fucked.

Terry was due to make a personal appearance at the opening of a pet shop in Surbiton on Monday but withdrew late from the event, leaving around 100 supporters disappointed.

Ledley King would agree with this too, except the FA paid him off never to comment on the matter (allegedly).

The prospect of the England captain being accused of racism hangs over the game today with Anton Ferdinand expected to ask Queen's Park Rangers to petition the Football Association to investigate allegations that John Terry abused him during Chelsea's defeat at Loftus Road on Sunday. Ferdinand will make a final decision this morning after speaking to manager Neil Warnock, but The Independent understands that his inclination is to take the matter further.

Ferdinand and Terry clashed during the match, and afterwards the England captain was accused by television viewers, via Twitter and the internet, of using foul and racist language towards Ferdinand. He put out a statement denying the accusation and stating he and Ferdinand had spoken after the match and "there was no problem between us". However, it clearly was not closed as far as Ferdinand was concerned.

What did happen after the match was a tunnel bust-up between players from both sides, which is claimed to have involved Terry and QPR goalkeeper, Paddy Kenny, who was furious after the Chelsea captain allegedly insulted him on the pitch with a jibe of a very personal nature.

"Hmmm, I know just what would unsettle the opposition the most right now... racist abuse!"

Except it doesn't need to be calculating, footballers wind each other up on the pitch all the time, there's no reason why Terry (or Materazzi or whoever) wouldn't go as far as possible to try and get an opponent to react. Especially given they're cunts.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 10:19 (fourteen years ago)

watching the tackles, elbows etc that the average epl defender puts in on other professionals each week, imagining that there's a line drawn at verbal abuse of any type seems.... naive

I'm not aware that racial abuse between players is that common

Chelsea FC star John Terry left hundreds of children and fans disappointed as he failed to turn up to the opening of Reptile Kingdom in Surbiton today. Hundreds of people queued down Ewell Road waiting for John Terry to turn up; many with books and footballs to get signed, but all were left without seeing their Chelsea FC hero.

The controversy surrounding Terry is thought to have prevented him attending the shop opening today. As well as the Surbitonpeople reporter, there were many photographers and reporters from the national press. We think it's a shame that he didn't turn up as although he may have had a few awkward questions from reporters, he would have received huge support from the hundreds of supporters who had turned up to meet him.

We spoke with some of the people who had turned up to see the Chelsea star: Liam from Berrylands said "I'm gutted as I've been queuing with the kids for hours to meet their hero John Terry, he could have said he wasn't coming." Ian from central Surbiton said "I'm a bit annoyed as I have taken a day off work to see him." Kim from Ewell Road said "I just feel sorry for the kids who were so looking forward to meeting him. We still love him though."

Unfortunately the John Terry no show overshadowed what was a big day for the owners of Reptile Kingdom at 122 Ewell Road, Surbiton. The owners of the new shop are Ryan and Terrence who have put a lot of work into opening the new shop. There was face painting, free refreshments, free raffle and 'touch & feel' sessions with some of the snakes.

METRO version of the story is different:

http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/oddballs/879616-john-terry-makes-slithering-apology-after-snake-shop-no-show

The Chelsea and England captain had been expected to cut the ribbon at the Reptile Kingdom in Surrey, with owner Terrence Clark saying he had organised Terry’s appearance through a mutual friend.

But, in a statement, Terry said: ‘There appears to be some confusion regarding my attendance at an opening of a pet shop today in Surbiton.

'I had not agreed to attend the opening of this or any other shop today. I very much regret any distress or disappointment that may have been suffered by the public.’

Clark revealed the day was still a success but added: ‘It looks bad on him and not us. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed but we still had a good time.’

The Blues skipper has found himself embroiled in another slippery situation, with QPR’s Anton Ferdinand said to be considering lodging a complaint against him with the FA over alleged racist remarks.

as if he indeed wasn't supposed to open the pet shop, but could still be criticized for not opening a toy shop in Fulham

I'm waiting for footage to leak onto youtube of him clearly mouthing an acceptance of the offer to open Surbiton's famed Reptile Kingdom.

You can hear players shouting at Loftus Road often enough, because of the proximity of pitch to crowd. Not so much on Sunday though, because the ground was so noisy.

Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

To be fair to EBL&RJT, he's done a great deal to build bridges between different cultures, as Vanessa Perroncel would agree.
