So, box.net is giving 50GB cloud storage for 50 days for iOS users. Their usual free amount is 5GB. I signed up.

http://box.net/
What can I use this for?
― Jeff, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)
It's cloud storage. I think you know how you might use cloud storage. You only get 5GB free w/ iCloud.
― Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)
I don't really use much storage. I have Dropbox and that works so well with multiple computers/platforms and devices. and I only get 2 gigs with it.
― Jeff, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)
I don't like having to keep files on my work computer if I want to access them from there. I like the cloud.
― Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)
I meant to mention, the new push notifications in iOS 5 are fucking boss

dropbox keeps your files on the cloud as well as synchronized on whatever computers you have it installed on. I have a paid account with 50+ megs. I'm sharing folders with my record label partners and the mastering people we're working with, sending files back and forth. It's totally fantastic. I'm also using it to sync 1password and notational velocity, and have been fighting to figure out a way to get it to sync my Font Explorer library between two computers.
And the app is great.
― dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
You don't have to download anything. Guy finishes mastering a record. Saves it to or moves it to the dropbox. It's upload to the internet over night while downloading to my computer at the same time. I wake up and it's there on my hard drive. But it's also in the cloud.
My girlfriend has two computers, a desktop and a netbook. She writes fiction so her only concern is tiny word documents. She doesn't even bother moving them around, her documents folder is essentially dropbox. Save a story and it's immediately on both her computers and backed up to the internet. Plus prior versions. And dropbox knows if you're on the same network so it transfers files over WIFI instead of online if the computers are in the same place.
― dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)
whoa didn't know this:
And dropbox knows if you're on the same network so it transfers files over WIFI instead of online if the computers are in the same place.
do you know any of the technical details? e.g. which protocol are they using?
― caek, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
nope
― dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)
Is there a way to use Dropbox ONLY through the cloud? I don't want my personal files staying in my work computer.
― Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)
Yes. Just don't install dropbox on your work computer. You can still log into the website.
― dan selzer, Saturday, 15 October 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)
Or you can manually tell the client on each machine which folders you do and don't want it to synchronise to that computer.
― JimD, Saturday, 15 October 2011 06:41 (fourteen years ago)
box.net meanwhile has 1) 100mb per file limit and 2) no desktop client software unless you pay for it.
― JimD, Saturday, 15 October 2011 06:45 (fourteen years ago)
there's a reason Steve Jobs offered dropbox 800 mil...
― dan selzer, Thursday, 20 October 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)
Yeh, the 100MB limit is kind of for shit when I'm trying to back up videos.
I will take another look at Dropbox.

Guys for real, how the fuck do I send email attachments? I know there's got to be a way with the right apps

I would love to know. I use an app for Gmail, which is way better than the built-in Mail app, but it doesn't allow attachments either.
― Je55e, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)
Dropbox!
actually not sure what you want to do, but you can upload a photo or document from your iphone to dropbox, then share a link to it via email, all within dropbox.
have I mentioned DROPBOX!
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)
If you like making music on your iPad I strongly recommend the Animoog app.

99 cents now, 29.99 soon. so get it soon.
― polyphonic, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
It's fun x2.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)
I remember now the downside of Dropbox: 2GB capacity on the free version. I should have taken advantage of one of their big promotions.
OTOH, free Box=100MB max file size. Oh well.
― Je55e, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)
I paid the 100/bucks for pro, and have gotten more space simply for suggesting so many people sign up.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)
is agenda the best calendar app, and tweetbot best for twitter?
― cozen, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)
I mean Dropbox can send links but I need to be able to keep PDFs of my references and resume on my phone and be able to speedily reply to Craigslist job postings on the fly. How to I shot?

So I got the iPhone 4S today, after having had the 3G for the last few years. What apps are worth getting that I didn't have access to before - any recs?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)
dropbox app should be able to handle all that stevie
― max, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)
Like emailing as an actual attachment? It can't, unless I'm missing something. You can only email links to the file.

- find thing you want to attach- open it- choose the option to send it by email- a new email opens with thing attached to it
Going the other way round (i.e. starting an email before attaching something) is more intuitive but you can't do it that way. Also you can only choose to email something if the app allows it. I know right.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)
I think Stevie might want to be able to attach a document to a reply to another email?
Stevie, if you're emailing from a link in a CL ad, you could copy the email address and then do what AA said and paste it to the To field.

yeah you cant do it directly--you download the PDF to ibooks (or the picture to photos) and then from there you can email it
― max, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)
and, no, you can't attach a file from a new email or reply email--it has to be done from w/in another file-management program
― max, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
Any good file mgmt apps that allow multiple attachments?

how do I refresh calendars in agenda on iOS?
― cozen, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)
The Animoog is incredible. Thanks for that!
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 08:44 (fourteen years ago)
cozen - think you might need to shut it down completely (ie in the 'dock' at the bottom) and then re-open. Bug, i think.

why do people like words with friends? i didn't realize it was the same as scrabble so my wife and i downloaded it and were like uhhhh this is just a shittier version of scrabble. we didn't even finish a game. is it just because it's free?
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
i think people like it because it's like scrabble.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

― cozen, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)

― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
scrabble app doesn't let you play by mail, unless they've updated since I last played
― cozen, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)
