This week is a big one for a certain type of baseball fan, as the Society for American Baseball Research — SABR — gathers at the Long Beach Hilton for its annual conference.

...

On-site registration is $59 for a day, $93 for two days, and $159 for the full conference.

Spectrum, I'd say to the guy, "Your insistence on knowing what your God wants is absurd and certainly more sinful than two people engaging in intimate acts."

Or I'd do what I'd actually do, and say, "Fuck you, you homophobic asshole." Fuck a job.

I don't do on-site registration, jaymc, and that's not a meal. Aren't you a busy newlywed, tho.

I'm just saying, people have different priorities for what they spend their money on.

xp yea i just don't keep my mouth shut around jerks like that. i understand that you don't want to shit where you eat but honestly some people just need to be told.

surm, Thursday, 13 October 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

When I was younger I used to get into fist fights about this kinda stuff... maybe I've lost my taste for personal conflict or something. My fear is that I don't handle irrationality very well ... if I can' get anywhere with reasonable arguments, I get mad, and that's where I imagine this would lead since this dude is strongly religious.

But honestly guys, I'm still fairly new about being gay, so part of the trouble is handling myself with that cool pride that earns respect without starting a shit storm. I'm getting there and I'll be fine, but I don't want to fumble this when I have my sole source of income on the line -- it's not like this guy is some random office-mate, he's my partner in a very small, family-style office. At the very least it's inspiration to work my ass off to become more independent in my career life. That way I wouldn't have to measure my personal feelings against the need to not starve.

Spectrum, Thursday, 13 October 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Super high prices for fine dining is why it is a special occasion treat (for most people) that some people save up for and splurge on. And it's certainly more than just "food." That's like saying of a a painting "That much money for a couple of pounds of acrylic, canvas, and wood!"

Anyway, I had a full and awesome night last night. Went to see Portishead play, then hung out at one of the gay sports bars where I met a really adorable union carpenter guy. He's 33 and very boyish, but best of all: 5'5" tall!!!! This morning he reminded me of my opening line when I met him: I sat down next to him and said, "Take me home with you." And he said no. But apparently I was very persuasive, and he took me home with him.

Spectrum, all I can offer you is support and my exhortation to be patient. It takes a bit to create a persona.

was he Reform?

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Friday, 14 October 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

I think so? But I mean he kept kosher and had his iPhone language set to Hebrew and also had a rainbow mezuzah. Like he was super into Judaism.

Contrary to popular belief, they're a major pain and don't go away with a simple one-time application of shampoo.

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 October 2011 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

Oh my dear lord, I think he carpenter might be a HOT MESS. Clue 1: He called me at 1:50 a.m. But you know, sometimes you get a late night craving, and it's been a long, long, long time since I've received a booty call.

Clue 2: I just had a long phone call with him in which he told me way more than I needed to know at this stage. E.g.: He took recently dated/parented a 20 year old, gave him money, got ripped off. Also, about his mid-20s suicide attempt. (I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like guys I hook up w/ feel OK about telling of their suicide attempts. This has happened at least 3x before, with even very "together" strait-laced "normal" guys. It's either that my big, pleading eyes make them want to open up, or being around me makes them consider giving suicide another chance.)

#3. Not really a sign of Hot Mess, but holy shit, he's from the South Side and OMG hearing him talk is like playing this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msSB5ev41Sk

Actually, if he were not Messy otherwise, that would be kinda hot.

Je55e, Saturday, 15 October 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

I realized while I was on the phone with him that the reason I haven't been on either end of a booty call since around 2003 is that most people I know just about never use the phone for personal/fun. Stevie and I discussed talking to each other on the phone and while I'm not averse to the idea at all, it just seemed almost like the idea of sending each other letters in the mail. Again, not that I'm against the idea, but it just didn't make any sense for a second.

Je55e, Saturday, 15 October 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

Cmon don't fucking ask me if I'm gay right in front of my pops. I mean, he knows the deal and all but wtf have some common sense. And be goddamn satisfied with the answer "kinda", cause that's all you're going to get, no matter the situation.

turfin' bird (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 October 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

corey, Saturday, 15 October 2011 04:55 (fourteen years ago)

Everybody still gay?

Je55e, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

Had drinks w/ Stevie last night, I think we both are. Still.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

i slept with a ton of women while this thread was down, but that's all over now so

Oh. I missed Rev's post, pre-Event. Yikes!

Je55e, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

Oy, while ILX was down, I got a reminder of why it's hard to remain friends with exes, even the ones that dumped you and not vice versa.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

(Was going to make that post gay-specific, but I'm pretty sure that's true across the board.)

michael assbender (Eric H.), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

Well, why?

Je55e, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

"even the ones that dumped you" ?

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:23 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, if I was the one who did the dumping, there would be no possibility for recidivism. But because I was the one dumped, now I have to be the one to say "No, you were right the first time."

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 October 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

hi y'all

corey, Thursday, 20 October 2011 03:12 (fourteen years ago)

Was struck recently to do an ILM poll of Prokofiev Piano Concerto #2 vs. #3. But I realized it would just be more efficient to ask you which you prefer, Corey.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 October 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

aww

surm, Thursday, 20 October 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

really the only Prokofiev I've heard that's hooked me so far are the 1st and 3rd symphonies, L'Enfant prodigue and Pas d'acier. I had a bad reaction to one of the PCs (No. 1 I think) so I haven't investigated the others yet. Recommend any recordings?

corey, Thursday, 20 October 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I think you told me you had a reaction to one of the concertos. I think the second and third are something like the pinnacle of 20th c. music for me right now, but ymmv if Prok hasn't done much for you yet.

2: Horacio Gutierrez is the standard bearer, but I really like the time Anna Vinnitskaya takes with the first movement.
3: I prefer Argerich's later recording with Charles Dutoit (1998) to the earlier, more famed one with Claudio Abbado. Again, Gutierrez is pretty fantastic, too. Some swear by Graffman, but I think his range isn't quite flamboyant enough.

Recordings of the 3rd outnumber the 2nd by about 8-1.

michael assbender (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 October 2011 04:18 (fourteen years ago)

So this thing is no longer a going concern and I don't get it. He seemed so into me when we were together, but barely interested when we were not. I pretty much had to pester him to get back together, even as he kept saying he wanted to see me. I think he's just a flake and I've given up on him. Communication death and we didn't even smang. Smh.

turfin' bird (The Reverend), Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:49 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, Rev.

corey, Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck, I've had something similar like that happen to me once and it's so confusing and frustrating. Hugs, bruv.
