Today I had a HILARIOUS employee ID photo taken (I look insanely excited in the picture and every time I look at it I LOL) and while I waited for the picture taker, I watched a disaster safety video about this building. Every scenario started with, "In the event of (insert disaster here), the glass and steel in the main building can become deadly..."

THERE IS NOWHERE TO RUN.

I'm just going to pop in here once a day around lunch and say something about this building.
Dress Barn is having a 60% off clearance sale!
I still can't form an opinion on whether Thompson Center is ugly or not. It confounds me.
― kenan, Thursday, 29 November 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link
It's pretty ugly.

Originally, the design called for curved, insulated (double paned) glass panels, but these were found to be prohibitively expensive. Flat, insulated glass had been suggested, but were dismissed by Jahn. Single-paned (non-insulated), curved glass panels were eventually used and resulted in the need for a more expensive air conditioning system, which remains very costly to operate and is insufficient on hot days (internal temperatures have reached as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
Oh goodie.

I always kind of get a kick out of there being a food court at the center of all that curvy glass.

That's a couple floors higher than me, I think, but is pretty much the view from our "break room" which is really just large cubicle with a microwave in it.

I really do talk about this building too much. Sorry.
Likes: The Thompson Center, Dress Barn, Cobb salads Dislikes: Two-faced people, static cling, nausea

Yeah, that's open, too - no glass, so if I get overwhelmed with the hopelessness of it all one day while I'm waiting for my pop corn to pop, I can just jump right over.

Somebody took a dive in Marshall Fields not too long ago. I'm sure somebody has killed him/herself here at some point although I've been unable to find anything about it.
Okay, that is your daily update from Clark and Lake.
Jenny out.

So it looks like the good Dr. and myself and hopefully a few other peeps will be hitting the Small Bar on Division tomorrow. I know it's probably gonna be really cold, but if anyone feels like coming out, the more the merrier. Last year on my bday I was at a bar trivia and we named ourselves the Stingies for that night, but when we surprisingly won a round the host (purposefully) called our name out as the Stingles (rhymes with Pringles), and continued for the rest of the night. Then all my friends started calling me Stingle for a little bit. I'm hoping tomorrow lives up to that.

The location here should be obvious - Block 37 is on the upper left.

Thanks, J-man.
What is Block 37, anyway? I run across that term every so often, mostly having to do with CTA construction. What does it mean?
― jaymc, Thursday, 29 November 2007 22:35 (sixteen years ago) link
Wait, I just found a website called "Google" that can find me the answer to that question.

Catch 35 Bin 36 Block 37
― dan m, Thursday, 29 November 2007 22:43 (sixteen years ago) link
one of these things is not like the other, etc
I still can't find out why it is called "Block 37."
― jaymc, Thursday, 29 November 2007 22:53 (sixteen years ago) link
Even though I now know that it's that construction zone across from Marshall Field's.
Wikipedia says it is one of the original 58 blocks of the city. So I'm guessing they refer to neighboring ones as 36, 38, and so on? No idea which way they're organized.
