£60 seems like a good deal for two years' insurance but otoh I don't know much about insurance

is the iphone covered on your home contents insurance?

cozen, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

for MBP you need applecare++ iirc

applecare NT & NT+ coming next year obv

Euler, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

So, supposedly this new AppleCare+ plan has to be purchased at the same time as the phone, but that wasn't made completely clear.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Pretty rough considering normal applecare can be had at any time in the first year, although I suppose you could drop your phone and THEN buy applecare+.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

This is the first one to cover accidental damage iirc so i guess that's it

Cozen: my house insurance covered my phone, yeh

stet, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

oh damn

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/11/sprint-iphone-4s-to-be-sim-unlocked-verizon-after-60-days/

I wld go with sprint because it seems like the 'indie choice' ya mean but

2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

Kind of hope that puts some pressure on AT&T, but who knows? Verizon/Sprint are doing it because they're trying to live up to this "world phone" label and cdma support is virtually nil outside the US, right?

( ) (mh), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i think at&t is less likely to change since they actually have a chance of getting some money out of int'l travelers, verizon and sprint werent getting any at all so its like "whatever, might as well"

max, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

xp you get cdma in aruba and baghdad i think, so verizon already had that market sewn up.

caek, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

should i upgrade to lion everyone?

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

HI DERE

tbh I have no idea how Lion is doing stability-wise ATM; I've held off upgrading and it hasn't caused me any noticeable problems, the anecdotal stuff I've read seems to be split on whether it's a good idea or not and my wife's new MBP has Lion on it already and has zero issues. My gut call is "no, unless it has something you really need".

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

i kinda wanna get in on icloud

but also like, i'm a little worried about mail.app cuz i use that app so hard, and in ways that i'm probably not supposed to (like it's basically like a huge searchable database of everything in my life)

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

ah, I don't use the mail app at all so I can't really advise sensibly there

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

my friend complains a lot about the finder in lion, u notice anything weird with it?

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't played extensively with my wife's machine, so no.

lol really I just wanted to say hi, someone who is more knowledgeable should feel free to jump in at any time...

the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

my friend complains a lot about the finder in lion, u notice anything weird with it?

they completely fucked up the icon view in finder.. if you sort by date modified, it creates these groups of like "less than a day ago", "more than 30 days ago" that are a single line of files you have to scroll horizontally. i just want a big ass list of icons sorted by date!!

∞th-wave ska (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

hi xp

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

i never use icon view, i don't really "understand" it

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

i have a strange use-case where i need to visually scan over and pick out an image from a huge collection of images; other than that i mostly use detail or column view

∞th-wave ska (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

i guess if you're dealing wiht photos or wtv that's true

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

ack, it looks like the Sprint / Verizon iPhone 4s won't have be unlocked for GSM?

was actually gonna consider springing for one if it did

might just have to get really big pockets to use my ipad as a phone ?

Euler, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

You can change icon view back to the normal style. I only use it for my downloads folder.

I'm on Lion. The only thing annoying is some weird animations when moving stuff around in the Finder. But otherwise I think it's great. And all my software works with it, though I had to wait forever for Xrite to update their monitor calibration software which was like 10 years old.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

i know im gonna have problems with my uh... "special" copy of final draft :S

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

I have no issue with Lion other than not being able to set up spaces in a 2x2 desktop configuration which almost made me revert back but I've gotten used to.

joygoat, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Darn. I can't update to IOS5 with my work computer...

schwantz, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

cozen, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

I have all this power in my pocket.

And I still don't have a washing machine.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

it ended up being cheaper, so you all can relax.

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh god, iphone backing up, taking hours

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

anyone else finding the restore process not... working?

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

Loads of reports about that. I'm not even getting that far.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

it didnt work for me at first, then i just restarted my phone and it worked fine

prego, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

Mine backed up and immediately gave me some message about an internal error. Giving up, have to go to work.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

is match live yet? that's all I'm interested in, since I never buy anything from itunes

akm, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

nah, match isnt out yet

prego, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

Saw a couple random glitches in the browser on iOS "gold master" on an iPad, gonna update when I get home and hope it works a bit better

( ) (mh), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

Just use a direct download link. Much easier.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

No need for me so far. Downloading the OS X update first, then grabbing iOS 5, then... onward!

Looks like they just released XCode too.

( ) (mh), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Having people on iMessage is grebt

stet, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

is there a way to use that via the desktop yet? ichat? not yet tho?

markers, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't realise but the icloud login screen is where you can create a whole new icloud apple id that's separate from your itunes apple id. Useful for when you've got multiple people sharing one itunes id but need separate icloud ids for doc/contact syncing etc. <-- TYPING THIS gave me a headache.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

I have a choice of updating my dumb-phone to an iphone 4S or waiting to get iphone 5 when it's released sometime next year

I think it's probably worth the wait

ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

Boy, getting iCloud/Apple to verify my AppleID is a pain. Still waiting on them to send me an email. Otherwise everything else running smoothly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 October 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

I logged into icloud (from the mac) using my itunes apple id. It fartarsed around for a while, said "INCORRECT PASSWORD" in big red letters for a while, then just logged in as though nothing had ever happened.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 13 October 2011 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, nothing quite so smooth like that. Still gives me a 'resent verification email' option and then of course refuses to actually deliver one.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 October 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

'Resend' rather. Anyway.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 October 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

My email came through. iOS 5 never installed for me, mind.
