Got a new job a few weeks ago, and got a bottle of Blanton's from a friend in congratulations. So so so so good. Mmmmmmm!!!!

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Saturday, 8 October 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

some quick notes:

ancient ancient age - sweet, good rye character. abrupt finish. can't complain - 17 bucks for 10 y.o. whiskey!
michter's bourbon (someone brought this) - wtf is it? not kentucky or straight according to the label. thin body. harsh finish. kinda shitty.
weller 12 - deep, rolling waves of caramel and vanilla. smooth. fireplace bourbon as someone said.
old bardstown 101 - rye spice, grassy or plantlike quality. quick finish. good no-bullshit sipping.
turkey 101 - the turkey flavor profile is so easy to understand. heat, spice, a bit sweet in the finish. not very refined but that's its main good quality.
elijah craig 18 - bizarre nose. muted flavor--a little boring? need to try again. still haven't found a heaven hill product that speaks to me.
4 roses sb (oesq recipe) - go to the 4 roses website sometime--when you get in the big splash word is "MELLOW" which i have to lol at because 4 roses bourbons are almost cerebral--tons of flavors and overtones, many of which are not obvious. this one is medium body, medium sweetness with these odd banana-bubblegum flavors going on. really brings the complexity and totally delicious.
william larue weller - sweetness bomb! 120-something proof, it's basically like drinking both the creme brulee and the blowtorch. big, big flavors.

i need to re-taste the ryes because whatever was left of my pallet got absolutely wrecked by the weller.

tonight sipping gelnfiddich 12 yo from a flask, doens't seem right but it's what's for dinner

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 October 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

have you tried mixing two parts everclear to one part baileys xp?

nakhchivan, Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

if you tell me what everclear is i'll figure out my local equivalent and let you know

had poitin last month btw. imma try to get a bottle, apparently i'd have to go 'down home' and ask the milkman, he'll drop it in with the semi-skinned one of the days.

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

haw

i remember my uncle had brought some illicit poitin over back in the day

nakhchivan, Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

The quality of poitín was highly variable, depending on the skill of the distiller and the quality of his equipment. If poorly produced it can contain dangerous amounts of methanol and can blind or kill.

real talk

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

but twasn't bad, the stuff i had, tbh.

at-zing-two-boards (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 October 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

caramel flavor on george dickel 12 yr is just outrageous

2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Sunday, 9 October 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

ok i gotta try this

tehresa, Sunday, 9 October 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

ladies and gents, I have long (mis)regarded Johnnie Walker as a go-to drink for people who prize labels and such over a quality drink, but I feel I've been mistaken. Anyone have any recommendations for which to buy and for what purpose? I've had some mixed/on-ice drinks w/red label, not sure where the quality line is when it comes to "just sip this neat", etc.

when it comes down to it, I can pour nearly any whiskey in a glass and start chugging but serving ideas and opinions are appreciated

JW black is pretty good, rather mellow and smooth and therefore a little bit boring. but a decent choice. I'd take it over jack daniels but not before jim beam.

2001: a based godyssey (dayo), Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Just got given a bottle of Highland Park as a gift. The tasting is about to commence.

owenf, Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

Oh man, I love Highland Park!

( ) (mh), Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

va abc had the knob creek single barrel $3 off so i got some. had a bit last night. much less in your face than i remember from the first time i had it.

tehresa, Sunday, 9 October 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

xxxxp, JW Black is one of my favourite widely-available blended whiskies. It has a briney, smoky quality that i think comes, in part, from Talisker and Caol Ila. Green and Gold are fruitier. All three are very good.

Haven't tried Blue yet (may do so tomorrow). Red is nothing special but decent enough.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Sunday, 9 October 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

never tried it. Excited.

owenf, Sunday, 9 October 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

drinking Highland Park was a protip from musician J4mes L3yland K1rby when I talked to him for about a minute about whiskey

( ) (mh), Sunday, 9 October 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

how old is your highland park? the 18 might be my annual bonus self-gift this year.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 9 October 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

I know I've sampled the 18. but I've only bought the younger varieties, I believe.

( ) (mh), Sunday, 9 October 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

johnnie walker black is great for all sorts of stuff imo. i forget where i read it but i read something to the effect of anyone who drinks scotch will happily drink johnnie walker black. it makes a good rusty nail too.

a 200 or 375 ml of jwb is ideal if youre going to a party with an unclear booze situation

call all destroyer, Sunday, 9 October 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

it's a 12 year.

owenf, Sunday, 9 October 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

owenf, Sunday, 9 October 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

sleeve, Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

#1stwp

The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

laphroaig is a bit much tbph

tried an 8 yr (?) wild turkey the last night and did not enjoy, maybe i need to get a bottle of rye and just work through it

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

i know what you mean but i haven't had a proper islay whisky in months and find myself sort of craving it at times. it comes and goes i guess.

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

as another US poster told you on the Premier League thread, Wild Turkey is not so great. (xp)

boxall, Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

finally finished the workmanlike jura last week, shelf atm reads p boring- paddy (purely for toddies), jack (purely for coke), bushmills and jameson so i've got an excuse to go hunting soon

xp yeah boxall but i think a few repped for the more agéd bottles itt and i couldn't really make out the lettering on the other bottles at the time tbph

totally

sometimes i just notice the phenols/brine and it's a bit much

The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

deems u should try the sainsburys irish single malt if u are going over the border, cheaper and better than jameson's imo

The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, it's pretty much the same as Tyrconnell.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

yes i think that's a goer

₪_₪ (darraghmac), Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

do you think whiskies oxidize in the bottle? the george dickel I opened a month ago isn't tasting so great now.

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

It's trying to tell you something.

boxall, Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

Got sold on a bruichladdich 12 and I don't know how I feel about it. Ledaig 10 is p delish though I am really just getting into scotch. I know I like the skunkier stuff tho it makes yr piss smell the next day

― ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:02 (1 minute ago)

not a lot, and not in that timespan

the disaffection is probably more subjective, you ought to ask yourself 'what did this whisky mean to me, and have things changed between us?'

The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

things have become more bitter in my life, it's true

my other theory - drinking directly from the bottle, my spittle has transmogrified the whiskey

The Green Path of Hope is formed (nakhchivan), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

I just had another swig and the flavor which I liked returned

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

boxall you do not just hate in wild turkey and get away with it.

i feel increasingly like a lone voice in the wilderness but turkey 101 is really, really good!

call all destroyer, Saturday, 12 November 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

Hey Krakow, thoughts on your order? Still planning to be round your way at new year. My local booze place is 2 mins away so easy to check what they have.
