this whole episode seemed weirdly unfunny to me, like there were past episodes that were not that laughworthy that had some kind of interesting character drama or observations of people, but here it seemed like it was only interesting if you got what they were parodying, really really specifically, and i just didn't get it.

Hm. Apparently I'm weird because I liked this best of the three from this season so far. Not s2 level but had me lolling, even if it was dumb.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 October 2011 02:47 (fourteen years ago)

polyphonic has it, I think. show is erratic as hell this season, and suffering for it. much prefer self-aggrandizing chang to the hot mess writers turned him into in S2. stop wasting the guy, he can be awesome but this crazy loser schtick is just tired and dumb.

still get super-excited for the whole day before it comes on (well, it and P&R together)

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

i always feel like people are overthinking chang. they haven't given him a single thing he hasn't been able to make funny yet imo.

alan2dyk (some dude), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

the show has always been erratic, pretty much by design

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:14 (fourteen years ago)

but the show is my rock!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:25 (fourteen years ago)

at least until 30 rock comes back.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:25 (fourteen years ago)

always seems weird when someone makes generalizations about an entire 20+ episode season 3 eps in

not criticizing, just feels like when people judge a ballplayer's stats a week into the season, i just don't get it

witchho (zachlyon), Saturday, 8 October 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

you shoulda heard me 3 seconds into the first episode

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 8 October 2011 04:04 (fourteen years ago)

i agree and i'm glad you said it. i mean he's a personable actor and his lines are funny but i don't think he really is that effective here. i guess that's kind of un-PC since everybody loves him from 'the wire' .

Todd was awesome! His voice & intonation was so great...

I actually hated him and most of this episode on first viewing. But then, I also switched off the tv in anger at Homer's line "and the domestication of the dog continued unabated" in "And Maggie Makes Three" when that first aired; now that's one of my favorite episodes. And I reversed myself on Todd/this episode when I watched it again (his screechy speech at the end ruled).

Community is getting/has gotten into Simpsons Golden Era territory. There is no turning back.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Saturday, 8 October 2011 07:26 (fourteen years ago)

The "No offense, Todd" repetition was great.

OFFENSE TAKEN

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 8 October 2011 07:32 (fourteen years ago)

He really is a weird looking dude too.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 8 October 2011 07:35 (fourteen years ago)

He looked like an over-inflated Art Garfunkel.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Saturday, 8 October 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

the logline and title of next week's episode have me pretty psyched if you want to spoil just that little bit for yourself.

there was a lot of amusing stuff in this episode, esp anything involving Todd, but I one thing I loved about the show was how there was always relationship and character growth underneath the genre exercises - Det Chang just felt like empty wackiness in comparison, even if there were some decent lines.

da croupier, Sunday, 9 October 2011 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

Liked it plenty on the first watch and like it even more on the second - the Todd bits get funnier.

Work Hard, Flunky! (R Baez), Sunday, 9 October 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)

Todd is an amazing character and I hope we see more of him. I also love it when Jeff gets butthurt about not being as popular as he thinks he is.

The Chang stuff was pretty funny as well but I'm not sure Community works as well when it's just one character off doing their own thing. It would've been a better central
concept rather than a side-adventure.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 October 2011 09:18 (fourteen years ago)

Chang was so entwined with Britta last week that it worked to have him off being mental with Nunez and the Dean this time

The dual voiceover near the end is really funny once you work out what's going through the Dean's head.

I might be wrong but I think Williams' character is meant to be a pisstake of Shawshank Redemption style prison mawk?

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 October 2011 12:39 (fourteen years ago)

Det Chang just felt like empty wackiness in comparison, even if there were some decent lines.

Yeah, this really registered on second viewing. It also seemed much less funny than it did at first. I think I felt similarly about Britta's OTT-ness in the previous episode.

I like that they're illustrating quantum mechanics and multiverse/timeline-theory using _actual_ dice rolls.

Countdown to someone bitching about "another episode about the group dynamic in 5... 4..."

Seriously though, this was great. Best episode of the season so far.

britta is amazing this season

hoooooooooly maaaaaaaaaaaacaroni what was that? jeff lost an arm!

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Friday, 14 October 2011 06:25 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't mind another group dynamic episode when done this way. Although, I thought it worth noting that the only time things got better when someone left the apartment to go get the pizzas was when Jeff went. Things went from normal to better, whereas when anyone else left it went from normal to various degrees of terrible.

britta is amazing this season

So psyched to see this. I have been waiting for Troy and Abed to throw a party for about two seasons now.

I hope they invited Pavel and Magnitude.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 October 2011 09:08 (fourteen years ago)

yeah this wasn't a 'group dynamic' episode imo. something that advances individual relationships between troy and pierce, jeff and annie, britta and shirley etc etc with all these great little moments is much better than "is pierce in or out?" part 12.

some dude, Friday, 14 October 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

some dude otm, my comment wasn't aimed at anyone around here, mostly other boards where I've seen excessive bitching about the "group dynamic" stuff
