Walt has no clue what Gus' empire even entails though, even if he wasn't utterly utterly unfit to run any small part of it

I think the situation with Gus has now gone so far beyond the point-of-no-return that he has to either die, be kidnapped or put seriously in hospital to give Walt and Jesse some breathing space.

It's worth remembering that whatever is in Gus's past is so bad and so terrifying that the head of a Mexican drug cartel did not dare to kill him when he had ample opportunity. Whatever that is is going to rain down so fucking hard on Walt and Jesse and they don't even know it. I kind of want to see that happen.

The Gus character is awesome but they can bring him back in flashbacks if need be.

This is why I've been wondering if Walt has seen the last of his family, with Sky, Walt Jr and Holly all going to Colorado or whatever. It seems possible that things will ratchet up way beyond the point of car wash cover stories.

"I know who you are" pretty much implies it's about status over assets.

It's been a while and I can't remember the exact wording, but I think he said 'the only reason I didn't kill you is that I know what you are' or something along those lines. I took that to mean that he could see that Gus was a businessman/a professional etc and that he could envision Gus making them money and getting on with things without causing problems even despite killing his cook/friend in front of him. It never occurred to me until I read it on here that he may have meant Gus had crazy dangerous connections.

Pretty sure it was "I know who you are", and it is implied in the previous season that Gus has military connections.

I think if the Don was that interested in retaining Gus's business insight he might have thought twice about shooting his meth cook in the head. And if he wasn't that interested then being a good businessman alone would not be enough to save Gus's life.

Whatever's happened in between may have changeed the Don's mind about keeping Gus around, but I definitely think that military/high status/seriously terrifying organised crime connections are implied.

I just thought that the Don was working from a gut feeling that Gus could be trusted and had something about him (he had shown himslef to be both brave and shrewd, and had an excellent front for his drug dealing via the restaurant) and the cook potentially wasn't as reliable.

I clearly missed any implied military background, it would explain the fastidiousness and emotionless brutality I suppose.

Also if Hank is correct about the sheer scale of Gus's empire outside Los Pollos Hermanos then someone would probably have to have been bankrolling it in the early stages.

a) Gus will die.
b) next season's "big bad" will be when Walt discovers the reasons why not even the cartel was willing to shoot him. IE, his backers.

In the next season, Walt takes on Germany.

Aye but he just seemed to talk to him in such a contemptuous way. Like if Gus was backed by some serious people then why would he fuck with him so much. I think it's more likely that 'I know who you are' is more 'I know you're a pussy and can't harm me' than anything else. Which was obviously wrong in the long run.

But as I said I hadn't actually picked up on any of this military stuff so I may not be paying enough attention!
