Shall we anticpate the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

Yeah, a dispiritingly weak ep this late in the game, hopefully the last one will be a coup (Gus has to die, surely). Think they´ll keep Hank alive, but I don´t rate his chances in S5 much.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

Gus can't die*! He's a great character and you need someone who knows what's up and plans long-term strategies. Walt used to be a bit like that but now along with everyone else he's just reacting and scrabbling around.

*I mean, they could well kill him. But it would be a lesser show without him unless they bring in some ultimate boss baddy.

kinder, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

if gus is dead surely who will get hank

conrad, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

they have to get rid of gus, i mean i love him, but im ready for a new plot

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

This has felt like The Gus Year to me, so yeah, it's probably all about the rise and fall of Gus.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:00 (fourteen years ago)

If Gus is gone, then there are no looming life/death conflicts. Hank/Walt/Family safe, out of the meth business, etc. They need Gus as a threat to push things forward. I will say that the ridiculous Ted turn of events leaving Walt without his pile of money ratchets things up a bit, because sans Gus they'd have to deal with practical issues, but I doubt that is how things will play out. Best bet I can think of is Walt trying to find a way to rat Gus out to the feds while saving his own skin, which seems to me fuel enough for plenty of tension/conflict/suspense, albeit of a real we've-seen-this-before variety.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

I'd be bummed if they gave Walt any degree of real salvation, though. Dude is a prick. Any time Skyler gets worried about his well being I think, jeez, fuck this guy that put your whole life at risk.

He brought down an entire cartel, and was brought down by a nutjob with a goatee.

They won't

Number None, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

Walt trying to take over Gus´ splintered empire could provide masses of plot.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:08 (fourteen years ago)

I can't imagine they'll kill Hank off before he comes to the realization that Walt was Heisenberg.

conrad, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

Wonder if they'd rope Hank in, have him help take down Gus while saving Walt. A family affair, as such.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

Hank has no fucking clue. Yet.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

you gotta assume that the final ep this season is a big cliffhanger, probably an "...is [character[] dead?" & the only q's at present are which character will that be & is he/she actually dead or no

End-of-season cliff hangers can go suck eggs

Walt has no clue what Gus' empire even entails though, even if he wasn't utterly utterly unfit to run any small part of it

fuck walt so much. totally happy for him to get offed and S5 to be The Gustavo Fring Show (starring Mike and Jesse).

BB hasn't really done stupid cliff hangers. The Gale thing was as close as they get.

Jeff, Thursday, 6 October 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

end of season one was cliffhangery, if only due to the writer's strike.

Also, maybe try a different show?

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

is there really anyone besides conrad who thinks hank knows about walt at this point?

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

i stand by my hanks belly has an inkling abt walt even if his mind wont admit it thesis

I can't remember any end-of-season cliffhangers in this show? Just saying I hope they don't spring one on us this time.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 6 October 2011 09:48 (fourteen years ago)

I think the situation with Gus has now gone so far beyond the point-of-no-return that he has to either die, be kidnapped or put seriously in hospital to give Walt and Jesse some breathing space.

It's worth remembering that whatever is in Gus's past is so bad and so terrifying that the head of a Mexican drug cartel did not dare to kill him when he had ample opportunity. Whatever that is is going to rain down so fucking hard on Walt and Jesse and they don't even know it. I kind of want to see that happen.

The Gus character is awesome but they can bring him back in flashbacks if need be.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 October 2011 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

Whatever that is is going to rain down so fucking hard on Walt and Jesse and they don't even know it.

This is why I've been wondering if Walt has seen the last of his family, with Sky, Walt Jr and Holly all going to Colorado or whatever. It seems possible that things will ratchet up way beyond the point of car wash cover stories.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 6 October 2011 10:07 (fourteen years ago)

thought this was more because of his assets than any repercussions unless you think they'd be just as happy to kill gus and kidnap walt/jesse and force them to cook in mexico

conrad, Thursday, 6 October 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

"I know who you are" pretty much implies it's about status over assets.

tehresa, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

It's been a while and I can't remember the exact wording, but I think he said 'the only reason I didn't kill you is that I know what you are' or something along those lines. I took that to mean that he could see that Gus was a businessman/a professional etc and that he could envision Gus making them money and getting on with things without causing problems even despite killing his cook/friend in front of him. It never occurred to me until I read it on here that he may have meant Gus had crazy dangerous connections.

peligro, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:32 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure it was "I know who you are", and it is implied in the previous season that Gus has military connections.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

I think if the Don was that interested in retaining Gus's business insight he might have thought twice about shooting his meth cook in the head. And if he wasn't that interested then being a good businessman alone would not be enough to save Gus's life.

Whatever's happened in between may have changeed the Don's mind about keeping Gus around, but I definitely think that military/high status/seriously terrifying organised crime connections are implied.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

I just thought that the Don was working from a gut feeling that Gus could be trusted and had something about him (he had shown himslef to be both brave and shrewd, and had an excellent front for his drug dealing via the restaurant) and the cook potentially wasn't as reliable.

I clearly missed any implied military background, it would explain the fastidiousness and emotionless brutality I suppose.

peligro, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Also if Hank is correct about the sheer scale of Gus's empire outside Los Pollos Hermanos then someone would probably have to have been bankrolling it in the early stages.

Wonder how much Mike knows as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

Mike is omniscient

Number None, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:53 (fourteen years ago)

Gus having military or similar links was hinted at with hank's background check too.

I can get on board with the copernicus-hitler theory but gus having military/high status/seriously terrifying organised crime connections doesn't seem to jive with the don pushing him around and generally treating him like a bitch I may have missed something

I'm pretty confident that

a) Gus will die.
b) next season's "big bad" will be when Walt discovers the reasons why not even the cartel was willing to shoot him. IE, his backers.

sean gramophone, Thursday, 6 October 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

In the next season, Walt takes on Germany.

Dunno, in the cause-for-retribution stakes, treating someone like a bitch is a bit different to shooting them in the head and dumping their body in the desert.
