not sure if you've used an iPhone before or not, but calling it a phone is missing the point entirely. i'm always shocked at people balking at the price when you consider what the thing does and how small it is. in 2004/2005 if you had told me about a handheld computer/music player that did everything the iphone did at that price, I would have not believed it. i barely make phone calls, have had 3 diff. iPhones and it has been worth every penny. will gladly buy this new one.

bld i hear you but the idea of upgrading every year for $400 is what is ridiculous to me, not the $99 intro price or whatever i paid for my 3G. i only upgraded to 3GS because my 3G died.

I have a friend with far too much disposable income and a vicious "me first" impulse who has purchased upon initial release an original iPhone, a 3G, a 3GS, a 4, an iPad, an iPad 2, a Mac Book Pro and a Mac Book Air. I am certain he will be ordering a 4S at midnight on Friday.

So when are you putting the scheme into place to corrupt him into leaving you all his money before he mysteriously dies?

upgrading every year never seemed defensible when you had to lock yourself into a brand new 2 year contract every time. now that they sell unlocked iphones, it's marginally more defensible.

dunno if it's iphone5 or the budget model but apple is definitely working on something with more psp-like screen dimensions, if that's the theoretical phone you'd rather have.

why do i have to wait until oct. 14 to buy the cheaper iphone 4?

i'm most pissed that the case producers always concentrate their best efforts on the *newest* model. like i got my ipad 1 less than a year ago and all i see now are accessories for ipad 2 ...

If they changed the screen size, they'd have to either have a lower number of pixels per inch, or seriously fuck with the app development landscape! I can't believe people were just like "oh yeah, larger screen, no brainer"

I dropped my iPhone 4 the other week, if I hadn't I wouldn't be upgrading.

If you're prepared to sign a new two year contract every year you can generally sell your old phone for the price of the new one (worked fine for me in the US the last few years). Of course then you decide to move abroad and have to buy out your contract, and that's when it gets a little painful.

to a lesser extent, that's the case with most Apple products - resale covers the Mac Tax if you're someone who upgrades constantly.

I sold a first-generation unibody Macbook (not pro) for $600 for my dad recently - good luck finding someone who'll pay $600 for a 3-year old 13" PC laptop.

ja, i know plenty of people who upgrade every year. unless you're in a contract (which has been easy to avoid in a lot of countries since launch), it's no more expensive than upgrading less often, because the resale value of apple stuff is so high.

that blows, I want to dump AT&T but I've found myself occasionally needing this feature, and the thuoght of verizon or sprint being slower data-wise doesn't fill me with hope. but AT&T fucking sucks in the bay area most of the time.

AT&T has decent service here, glad I'm in an area where they felt the need to install towers but it's still reasonably sparsely populated

Apple says "...iPhone 4S is the first phone to intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive" so it seems like a different issue.

no, xp. they are now "world phones" i.e. they have both cdma and gsm chipsets. or at least the ones sold in the US will.

xp: Depends entirely on what you're designing, doesn't it? Given the rapid evolution/devaluation still happening in the computer tech sector, it seems this is a turnover curve that ppl will be riding for some time to come; basically, things will slow down when phones/computers stabilize in a pattern similar to the automotive market, and even there you will still have leasehounds who will want to trade in their old model for a new one every three years.

i can't think of any useful engineering exercise where you want to design something that's obsolete in a year

it's not an engineering exercise, it's a marketing one. Same w/cars.

The big "this is worth me upgrading" changes to cars really only come every 5 or so years, but nonetheless cars get facelifts and changes every year because every year is someone's upgrade year and people who're spending a lot of cash want to feel that they've got something "new" to show for it.

Apple doesn't seem to have realised they're in this position with the phones now too, and they can't fuck about with a two-year cycle, because that means a rotten deal for people upgrading on the down-swing.

EG: You bought the 3Gs when it came out, a year later the iPhone 4 came out and yours looked old and crap.

I think even the most out-of-touch consumers know that an 18 month old phone design is on its way out, and there are a lot of people who just don't care.

Apple's focus is on the two-year contract victims that queued up like rabid dogs for the 3G and the 4, both in (a) servicing them with a whole new phone every two years and (b) not pissing them off.
