If you comment on your friend's post, and that post is public, your comment is public. If the post is restricted to that person's friends, your comment is visible to that person's friends too. Your comment/like gets the same visibility of the post it's on...

"Please do me a favor and move your mouse over my name here, wait for the box to load and then move your mouse over the "Subscribe" link. Then uncheck the "Comments and Likes, Photos, Status Updates."
I would rather that my comments on friends and families posts not be made public, thank You! Then re-post this if you don't want your every single move posted on the right side in the "Ticker Box" for everyone to see!
I'm posting this not only for myself, but also so that my friends and family will know to ask others to do the same if they would not like their every move on facebook noticed."

it is really annoying that you can't edit yr 'friend subscriptions' en masse - i don't want to see everyone's likes and comments and etc, but i have 250 friends, i'm not going to do this shit one by one

You can actually hide them from showing up on the ticker by going onto your profile and hiding 'Alexis likes Big Butts and Cannot Lie,' for example. The little X in the right hand corner when hovering.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)
that was an xp to hiding your own posts, not friends' posts
this unsubscribe meme is the wrong angle - it's the dolts who have fully Public profiles that are the problem. everyone should rickroll the walls of strangers that show up on their feed and shame them into buttoning down their privacy settings. until then, every interaction they have will be blasted to all their friend's friends

came to here to moan about that "please mouse over" bullshit. Because you know what's way quicker? Mousing over and unfriending your ass. You don't want me seeing comments on your friends' posts? Then why are you my friend? Why are you making them in public? Why aren't you fucking off?
― stet, Friday, 23 September 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)
Not at all sure about this new Guardian app that shows everyone on Facebook every article you read, either. Is the Guardian Facebook feed worse than it used to be?

What are the implications when I can now listen to the same piece of music with someone else on Facebook? What does it mean when I can watch an episode of Breaking Bad that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is also watching? How does the human brain begin to rewire itself to accommodate so much change in such a short period of time? Do national borders matter anymore? Can governments still control their citizens? How will science and medicine adapt to accommodate the new reality in which we live? Damn you, Mark Zuckerberg, you brilliant god-man, and at the same time, Thank you. Thank you for not just seeing the future but bringing it to us. My life, at last, has meaning, and I now find new reason to live.

i'm really confused by the whole lists thing now: can you no longer create individual settings for each list? and if you want to edit an existing list, e.g. add or remove people from it, you have to go through your entire friends list? the pre-existing privacy settings for lists that i had are still in place, i just can't alter them or adjust the settings on new lists.
― just1n3, Sunday, 25 September 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)
You don't want me seeing comments on your friends' posts? Then why are you my friend?
So you think you should be privy to what your friends say to their friends who aren't your friends? Why? Why should e.g. my workmates see me congratulating a cousin on a pregnancy?
I didn't see all this FoaF shit a week ago - it's a change in Facebook, not in people's interactions with it, that has made all this visible on my feeds. That it was all viewable before if I'd made the effort to go look for it isn't the point.
― 44.9 percent indie rock individualist (onimo), Sunday, 25 September 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)
I think showing people how much of what they post is visible to a LOT of people they don't know is a huge deal.
how many people have *finally* looked at their privacy settings and considered who should see what because of the ticker?
― Kerm, Sunday, 25 September 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)
So you think you should be privy to what your friends say to their friends who aren't your friends? Why?
Because they said it in public? If you don't want it seen, don't post it in public! This "mouse over" horseshit is no solution at all, because if I do that I don't see comments to *mutual* friends either, which then destroys the point of Facebook.
The real problem here is like Kerm says -- people have absolutely no idea what they're posting in public vs privately on Facebook. They also don't realise that "Friends of friends" means thousands of strangers seeing posts or pictures you thought would just be to some friends.
Hopefully the result of this extra exposure of who is posting what will make people lock their profiles down properly -- eg, the exact opposite of what Facebook wants.
― stet, Sunday, 25 September 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
Well, I always assume 'everyone can see' when making FB posts.
e.g. I was going to say something about Judee Sill's "Jesus was a crossmaker" but I thought it might annoy some of my religious friends (they are, I'm not) or end up raising dialogue I don't have with them in real life (live and let live, we don't go there basically)...

Because they said it in public? If you don't want it seen, don't post it in public!
That it's not explicitly private doesn't and shouldn't mean it's intended to be "public" - that it is is mostly down to the ignorance of users. Their ignorance doesn't make it ok for Facebook to decide to blast their shit all over the internet.
I lock down my profile and posts to friends only. I wish other people would too but I can't control friends never mind friends of friends so I'm stuck seeing all this shite that I was completely oblivious to before. That if Facebook's fault, not some half cousin twice removed's former coworker.
You know that "I couldn't help overhearing what you said there" guy in the office? Facebook wants us all to be that guy. Fuck that guy.
― 44.9 percent indie rock individualist (onimo), Monday, 26 September 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)
people having mundane-as-shit boring conversation loud enough so everybody can hear. facebook wants everyone else to know how boring and loud your conversation is. Please stfu.

i don't really mind and i'll be shocked SHOCKED if they don't add an option to turn off the ticker within a month but people need to pay attention to who can see what they're posting...
― Kerm, Monday, 26 September 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)
I must admit, I didnt give a rats this stuff was in the ticker but does it have to be in the *feed* as well? Thats where I dont want to see shit by ppl I dont know. It was able to filter that out before, why not now?

The irony of the fact we're ranting on about this on a completely public board that is Google-indexed hasn't escaped anyone, yes? Or the fact that it's a lot of random chatter with all people basically saying that the general public doesn't get this, and the openness doesn't appear to have changed that, and we all know facebook is a business, so...
It also does not escape my irony detector that I just posted this.

If you have people set to 'most updates' instead of 'all updates' it fixes this (or if you were lucky enough to get this as a default for all, like I did for reasons still unknown!). There's still no way to change it except on a person by person basis though, which sucks.
