Felt off, airless, a bit too predictable. Did Cougartown really need to be a continuing thing? Would prefer it if they just moved moved moved.

Did like the Doctor Who bit, though.

I hope that's the last show for a while where the group analyzes its own dynamic. I thought it was a good episode, but that topic is stale.

it's the kind of thing that head writers like to talk about in extensive online interviews but nobody else gives a shit about. just give us the funny.

hopefully pierce being back in the group means an end to the in-fighting plotlines, because that was old last season. less yelling, more zings!

but still some quality stuff tonight. i liked shirley quietly suggesting they use abed's catatonia as a chance to baptize him.

liked the 2001 and Shining nods but would've liked a full blown Kubrick ep more

I was dying already the instant Abed said "I'm on episode six", enough that my wife paused the episode and made me explain why I was laughing so hard and I said pretty much what Britta said 20 seconds later when we pushed play again.

I'm annoyed they just didn't use Dr Who and used some lame stand in.

Ep was kinda lame, but they always start slow. Not feeling the lizard but I <3 the 'lets breaking bad together' w/ omar line.

'Cut it boobs' p much the only line i lol'd at, along with the rectum bit.

Nah that was great, I hope it's the new Kickpuncher.

Episode was fun but kinda felt like they were trying to cram too much in, maybe the Dean/Goodman stuff could have waited an episode or two. Better than the start of S2 though. Shirley had most of the best moments although the idea of Chang as the security guard has serious lol potential.

i was impressed by this too! the whole episode looked very good. also britta went back to having wavy hair and i thought she looked amazing, especially in that gray shirt in the tag.

this was awful

Dan Harmon was saying on one of the DVD commentaries that they got so much flack for changing Britta's hair in season two. I didn't even notice she'd changed it back.

We had to stop the DVR because we were laughing so hard at "you've really thought this through" on the Dean's monkey hotel plans.

No way was this awful. I agree with Matt though - too much stuff. So far The Office, BBT and this have all started off pretty good and in the absence of ANYTHING FUNNY AT ALL on British TV I'm happy with that.

Think they were just getting their ducks in a row really, seemed to be a lot of scene setting crammed into 20mins.

yeah the episode felt a little strained in the agenda setting and the unsubtle "for you new viewers we want to attract and keep, this is starburns, he has star-shaped sideburns" stuff but still had some big laughs

this episode seemed the same as most of the episodes, to me

i for one always find starburns-has-starburns jokes funny.

also, i thought the dean's entrance was hilarious ('how ya like me now, bitches?!') and that set me up for the rest of the episode.

Pros: "We're gonna sleep together". Abed's high pitch noise. Monkey hotel. Pierce being good, Jeff being bad

Cons: That beginning song in general. Group dynamics analysis. Chang too far off the deep end to ever have any semblance of realism. Not many funny jokes this time

well, it IS kind of traumatic when your favorite show ends

otm. the dean made me laugh the most this episode.

I don't think a relatively harmless high pitched noise is criteria enough to be all "pathetic spazz".

But otm, about the dean being awesome. He's been the opposite of Chang. When Chang was getting worse Dean was getting better.

He never had to be coddled by his friends

he's usually not. squealing and then going catatonic because of a TV show being on hiatus is not really typical of the character in earlier episodes is all i was saying.

I loved it. Then I read everyone being all "stop being all about the dynamics of the group and shit" and I loved it a little less. On reflection, they should do that.

British people don't pronounce Deirdre like "deir-drah" though. We say "deir-dree". At least, I do.

considering that the s2 finale was basically a cliffhanger about pierce leaving the group, i took it as a given that they'd have to address that in the premiere. if we get three or four episodes into the season and the group dynamic stuff is still dominating the stories, then i'll complain.

people who dont think this episode sucked, mb you are just humourless &/or have bad taste? something to consider. imo community s2 was a terrifying yet ultimately v successful navigation of the limits of decreasing marginal utility of mining your own self-referential universe of jokes, & i feel like the reason it succeeded was due to a solid amount of new material and imaginative new ways to spin ongoing jokes, whereas this was all stark reiterations of old jokes (i named him annie's boobs, after annie's boobs--smh s1/s2 troy would have never) or pathetic attempts at updating old ones (funniest part of chang in the vents was when he was like "MONKEY GAS!" but they really dragged his descent 2 low--actually relieved to see him back in a position of power, best chang moment was "have you MET ME?!"). it was just a slog thru every community trope w/ terrible momentum, jeff's inspirational speech came like 2 minutes in, chang was barely funny. srsly the whole experience made me want to cry & rewatch season 1

i hope it's just the pressure of plot overload, setting up new characters & devices, that weighed it down (s2e1 was inarguably weighed down by untying the jeff/britta/annie unresolved love triangle but importantly differs from this in that it 1) successfully & neatly establishes the new equilibrium 2) is actually funny if you rewatch it), but this felt more unjustly self-assured and winking than any community yet, and i really think that will, if not now inevitably, be what turns it to unwatchable shit

Man if you think this ep "sucked" and is leading the show towards becoming "unwatchable shit", the problem is more with you imho. This was definitely nowhere near the top 15 eps of this show, but it was still funny. The tying up of loose ends from last season is what kept it from being top tier, that's for sure.

I do take contention with one of your examples though, Troy's "after Annie's boobs" is 100% something he would have said in any other season.
