sarahel, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

So it seems part of this new rollout is ppl will be able to display updates of stuff theyre watching/using in Netflix, Spotify, Hulu and Rhapsody.

Not one of those things is available in Australia. LOL.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I was wondering how that was going to go internationally. One thing it will do is put pressure on the idiot copyright holders to join the 20th century.

Facebook had all these customisable module bits years back. And they got rid of them all! Rememver you used to be able to drag around boxes with anything you had like an astrology app, weather, lastfm, that kind of thing? Then they made them all not work anymore. Now theyre bringing it all back basically?

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

I would rather that my comments on friends and families posts not be made public, thank You! Then re-post this if you don't want your every single move posted on the right side in the "Ticker Box" for everyone to see!

I'm posting this not only for myself, but also so that my friends and family will know to ask others to do the same if they would not like their every move on facebook noticed."

I saw that a bunch last night, but I was too tired to investigate further. Is that true? I was doubtful because it was being posted by the same people on my feed who are always posting the "OMG FACEBOOK WILL BE CHARGING $10 STARTING OCTOBER 15TH, POST THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY" stuff. But, if thats for real, wtf.

iatee, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

ok the ticker thing is actually doing a good job of showing people how much crap they're posting publically... Asking people to unsubscribe from your "Comments and Likes" is like asking them no to read the billboard you keep updating in front of your house.

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

If you comment on your friend's post, and that post is public, your comment is public. If the post is restricted to that person's friends, your comment is visible to that person's friends too. Your comment/like gets the same visibility of the post it's on...

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Guys please add "-Kerm" to all your google searches because I don't want the entire internet reading what I say on ILX thanks!

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

it is really annoying that you can't edit yr 'friend subscriptions' en masse - i don't want to see everyone's likes and comments and etc, but i have 250 friends, i'm not going to do this shit one by one

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

You can actually hide them from showing up on the ticker by going onto your profile and hiding 'Alexis likes Big Butts and Cannot Lie,' for example. The little X in the right hand corner when hovering.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

that was an xp to hiding your own posts, not friends' posts

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

this unsubscribe meme is the wrong angle - it's the dolts who have fully Public profiles that are the problem. everyone should rickroll the walls of strangers that show up on their feed and shame them into buttoning down their privacy settings. until then, every interaction they have will be blasted to all their friend's friends

llurk, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

i'm keeping quiet and watching the ticker for juicy blackmail opportunities...

came to here to moan about that "please mouse over" bullshit. Because you know what's way quicker? Mousing over and unfriending your ass. You don't want me seeing comments on your friends' posts? Then why are you my friend? Why are you making them in public? Why aren't you fucking off?

stet, Friday, 23 September 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

Not at all sure about this new Guardian app that shows everyone on Facebook every article you read, either. Is the Guardian Facebook feed worse than it used to be?

What are the implications when I can now listen to the same piece of music with someone else on Facebook? What does it mean when I can watch an episode of Breaking Bad that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is also watching? How does the human brain begin to rewire itself to accommodate so much change in such a short period of time? Do national borders matter anymore? Can governments still control their citizens? How will science and medicine adapt to accommodate the new reality in which we live? Damn you, Mark Zuckerberg, you brilliant god-man, and at the same time, Thank you. Thank you for not just seeing the future but bringing it to us. My life, at last, has meaning, and I now find new reason to live.

i'm really confused by the whole lists thing now: can you no longer create individual settings for each list? and if you want to edit an existing list, e.g. add or remove people from it, you have to go through your entire friends list? the pre-existing privacy settings for lists that i had are still in place, i just can't alter them or adjust the settings on new lists.

just1n3, Sunday, 25 September 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

You don't want me seeing comments on your friends' posts? Then why are you my friend?

So you think you should be privy to what your friends say to their friends who aren't your friends? Why?
Why should e.g. my workmates see me congratulating a cousin on a pregnancy?

I didn't see all this FoaF shit a week ago - it's a change in Facebook, not in people's interactions with it, that has made all this visible on my feeds. That it was all viewable before if I'd made the effort to go look for it isn't the point.

44.9 percent indie rock individualist (onimo), Sunday, 25 September 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

I think showing people how much of what they post is visible to a LOT of people they don't know is a huge deal.

how many people have *finally* looked at their privacy settings and considered who should see what because of the ticker?

Kerm, Sunday, 25 September 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

So you think you should be privy to what your friends say to their friends who aren't your friends? Why?

Because they said it in public? If you don't want it seen, don't post it in public! This "mouse over" horseshit is no solution at all, because if I do that I don't see comments to *mutual* friends either, which then destroys the point of Facebook.

The real problem here is like Kerm says -- people have absolutely no idea what they're posting in public vs privately on Facebook. They also don't realise that "Friends of friends" means thousands of strangers seeing posts or pictures you thought would just be to some friends.

Hopefully the result of this extra exposure of who is posting what will make people lock their profiles down properly -- eg, the exact opposite of what Facebook wants.

stet, Sunday, 25 September 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I always assume 'everyone can see' when making FB posts.

e.g. I was going to say something about Judee Sill's "Jesus was a crossmaker" but I thought it might annoy some of my religious friends (they are, I'm not) or end up raising dialogue I don't have with them in real life (live and let live, we don't go there basically)...
