(LJ has had a blog front-page and a friends news-feed since the early 2000s)

LJ never had (a) 750 million users or (b) the corporate will to catalogue the shit out of 750 million people (correct me if I'm wrong)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

Thats true, it hovers around the 50-60 million user mark, I think, and is not driven by ad culture at all.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

You're not wrong.

Also, LJ (for all its sense of community) had no real functionality besides just being a blog.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

ad culture

You only have to be a marketing victim if you choose to. If/when the day comes that I'm so bombarded with advertising being worked into every function of facebook (from status hotlinks or watermarked images), I'll head for the door.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I use adblock and Noscript and hide/dont play all the apps and games. Except WWF. I like that one.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, can you guys give me a simple list of what they're doing now?

Obviously there's this, but it's a little vague: The goal is to take everything we normally do on the rest of the Internet and bring it inside of Facebook. It's also one of the reasons I haven't yet taken to Google+ - this is exactly what I *don't want*. I want my different types of internet usage to be separate. I don't want my friends and my family and my work and my education and my email and my searching and my networking and my going to places in real life and my posting on message boards and my listening to music and my bookmarking of pages to be anywhere near each other unless I so choose, and no, circles and lists just won't cut it.

emil.y, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

yah its funny the # of internet services people use has def increased since facebook has been trying to put everything inside facebook, i mean like good luck zuckerbergs

ice cr?m, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I use lastfm - I dont need a music tracking app in FB.

I use LJ - I dont need a blog elsewhere (not in fb anyway)

I've never felt the need to advertise where I am at any given moment, where I went to school, where I work, who my family is. WTF internet? Why do people happily list all that info?

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

I just got the facebook inside my facebook and I think eventually everything in my facebook should be a facebook

I've never felt the need to advertise where I am at any given moment

I did the foursquare thing for a while until I realised there was literally no benefit to me at all in telling the whole internet that I was buying groceries.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:25 (fourteen years ago)

Same goes from stuff like miso where you tell t w i what you're watching on telly.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

No, the benefit is to the companies! And fuck that shit.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

(mind you I spose I do that with lastfm, but thats different, dammit)

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)

all those location services are just laying the foundation of the internet of things so they can sell themselves for like all the money

ice cr?m, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)

No, the benefit is to the companies! And fuck that shit.

That's where Facebook and Google+ are now I think, trying to maintain the appeal of data gathering for users. There has to be a benefit and it has to be real and sustained, otherwise you don't get your data (and fb doesn't buy your start-up for US$18m)

oops xp to cr?m

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

It's the whole we-are-their-product-not-their-customers thing

I started to type a post but I have no interest in a "career" as a social media pundit!

its true if u post something strategic looking itt mashable will lock u in their 'blogger room' look what happened to me

ice cr?m, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Friday, 23 September 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

scrabble updates in real time now!

sarahel, Friday, 23 September 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

So it seems part of this new rollout is ppl will be able to display updates of stuff theyre watching/using in Netflix, Spotify, Hulu and Rhapsody.

Not one of those things is available in Australia. LOL.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I was wondering how that was going to go internationally. One thing it will do is put pressure on the idiot copyright holders to join the 20th century.

Autumn Almanac (Schlafsack), Friday, 23 September 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

Don't worry, I've heard they have a kangaroo-spotting app

so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Friday, 23 September 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

i'll never get over it

markers, Friday, 23 September 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

Facebook had all these customisable module bits years back. And they got rid of them all! Rememver you used to be able to drag around boxes with anything you had like an astrology app, weather, lastfm, that kind of thing? Then they made them all not work anymore. Now theyre bringing it all back basically?

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Friday, 23 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

remember when yer wall was just this box anyone could edit

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Friday, 23 September 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

i'll edit your mum's box

I would rather that my comments on friends and families posts not be made public, thank You! Then re-post this if you don't want your every single move posted on the right side in the "Ticker Box" for everyone to see!

I'm posting this not only for myself, but also so that my friends and family will know to ask others to do the same if they would not like their every move on facebook noticed."

I saw that a bunch last night, but I was too tired to investigate further. Is that true? I was doubtful because it was being posted by the same people on my feed who are always posting the "OMG FACEBOOK WILL BE CHARGING $10 STARTING OCTOBER 15TH, POST THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PAY" stuff. But, if thats for real, wtf.

"Now is the time for the Google team to dig deep, and think about what they want for humanity."

iatee, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

ok the ticker thing is actually doing a good job of showing people how much crap they're posting publically... Asking people to unsubscribe from your "Comments and Likes" is like asking them no to read the billboard you keep updating in front of your house.

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:24 (fourteen years ago)

If you comment on your friend's post, and that post is public, your comment is public. If the post is restricted to that person's friends, your comment is visible to that person's friends too. Your comment/like gets the same visibility of the post it's on...

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Guys please add "-Kerm" to all your google searches because I don't want the entire internet reading what I say on ILX thanks!

Kerm, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

Public things are public.

it is really annoying that you can't edit yr 'friend subscriptions' en masse - i don't want to see everyone's likes and comments and etc, but i have 250 friends, i'm not going to do this shit one by one

civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

You can actually hide them from showing up on the ticker by going onto your profile and hiding 'Alexis likes Big Butts and Cannot Lie,' for example. The little X in the right hand corner when hovering.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

that was an xp to hiding your own posts, not friends' posts

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 23 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

this unsubscribe meme is the wrong angle - it's the dolts who have fully Public profiles that are the problem. everyone should rickroll the walls of strangers that show up on their feed and shame them into buttoning down their privacy settings. until then, every interaction they have will be blasted to all their friend's friends

llurk, Friday, 23 September 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

i'm keeping quiet and watching the ticker for juicy blackmail opportunities...

came to here to moan about that "please mouse over" bullshit. Because you know what's way quicker? Mousing over and unfriending your ass. You don't want me seeing comments on your friends' posts? Then why are you my friend? Why are you making them in public? Why aren't you fucking off?
