i don't mind this update too much though i don't know what the point is, but i will never forgive never forget the smushing together of messaging and chat.

I LOL at ppl saying they'll go to G+ tho.

It's the new "I'm moving to Canada!"

when I logged in and saw the new changes I was like, "great, a bunch of shit I don't want to read presented in a slightly different format"

Five bucks says you then posted that as your status.

I have to say, that ticker thing makes stalking easier--not that I would do that, mind you.

The Man With The Flavored Toothpick (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 September 2011 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

I don't mind the ticker, I just hate the way it displays 'top stories' and 'recent stories'. Even though it wasn't great before, at least you could switch tabs.

Really don't like where this is going...

http://mashable.com/2011/09/21/prepare-for-the-new-facebook/

Facebook is driven by a single, unique goal. Its priority isn’t to gain more users (it already has 750 million of those), nor does it feel compelled to find stupid ways to increase pageviews. Its primary goal right now isn’t to increase revenue, either — that will come later.

No, Facebook’s goal is to become the social layer that supports, powers and connects every single piece of the web, no matter who or what it is or where it lives. On Thursday at its f8 conference in San Francisco, the world’s largest social network will take a giant leap toward accomplishing that goal.

I have seen what Facebook is launching on Thursday, and it’s going to change the world of social media. And while I won’t talk about the mind-boggling things Facebook will be launching, I will say this: The Facebook you know and (don’t) love will be forever transformed. The news that will come out of Facebook during the next few weeks will be the biggest things to come out of the company since the launch of the Facebook Platform.

For Facebook, it all boils down to one problem: emotion. Facebook has hundreds of millions of users and spectacular levels of engagement, but it is a platform that has lost its emotional resonance over the years. More and more people visit Facebook out of necessity rather than desire. It’s a platform people prefer to hate, but won’t leave simply because all their friends are there.

It’s a relationship gone stale. After years of dating, the magic between Facebook and its users has dissipated. It’s a natural evolution in any relationship, but now there is another suitor vying for Facebook’s users. And a lot of people think this suitor is easy on the eyes.

That’s why Facebook launched three recent changes: revamped Friend Lists, a real-time new ticker, and the subscribe button. Friend Lists lets you share content with just your closest friends (with whom you have the strongest emotional connection), and the ticker lets you have real-time conversations with your friends as soon as they do anything. Subscribe lets you fill your News Feed with people you admire and respect, fostering a different type of emotional connection.

But these changes are just the beginning. The changes Facebook will roll out on Thursday are designed to enhance the emotional connection its users have to each other through Facebook. These changes will make Facebook a place where nearly everything in your life is enhanced by your social graph. These changes will make it so you know your friends better than you ever thought you could.

On Thursday, developers will be elated, users will be shellshocked and the competition will look ancient. On Thursday, Facebook will be reborn. Prepare yourselves for the evolution of social networking.

Like, unless they're launching free hologram technology where I can go grab a drink with someone who lives 3000 miles away, I'm not interested in Facebook making the site more "emotional".

If only G+ weren't so fucking weird, I think more people who checked it out would've stayed. (I left.)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 September 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

Doesnt seem that weird to me, just like a spartan FB?

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

tbh I've already forgotten what I thought was weird about it. I mostly just remember it being largely empty and unengaging.

Just got an email from Diaspora* 8 minutes ago reminding me that I'd signed up for an invite months ago. They promise to get it to me by the end of October.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 September 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

Facebook Music is launching tomorrow. This, everyone knows. But not everyone knows exactly how it will work, since Facebook been tweaking things right up until launch. But tonight one Facebook employee accidentally revealed one killer feature of the service.

Ji Lee, the creative director that Facebook stole away from Google in April, sent out the following tweet earlier:

The “Listen with your friend” feature in ticker is blowing my mind. Listen to what your friends are listening. LIVE.

Within minutes, Lee deleted the tweet, but not before Mitchell Holder grabbed a screenshot.

I've still not received a download archive of my identity.

just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:03 (fourteen years ago)

Wow its been hours now, right? Blimey. I dont think my data allowance can cop that.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:38 (fourteen years ago)

That's overnight. I requested it late last night, now late the following morning here...

just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah ok thats too much hassle for me, especially if thats a steady flow of data :/ I get free internet from work, I dont wanna take the piss :(

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

Turns out the download was ready, but there wasn't a notification. I assumed that I'd get an email or message or such to tell me.

I just returned to the 'Account Settings' and there was a download link - 59MB of gubbins.

just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

I did it a while back and it took a couple of hours. that was mainly b/c it downloaded copies of every photo I had ever uploaded, plus a video or two. I've deleted the archive now but IIRC it came through as a zip file which when unzipped had a single long text file of all my updates, plus the photos and videos as separate files. I seem to recall though that it only had the status updates, not the shares, links and whatnot.

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

It comes as a series of .html files and .jpg photos by the way, so you simply navigate the static, mainly bare text, pages in a browser. The full message history and the entirety of your own wall in an easily searchable format may be interesting/useful/depressing to some.

just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:54 (fourteen years ago)

there's also a third party app called "get old status" which does more or less the same thing

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)

Oh ok 59mb is nothing! I might play round with it on the weekend.

Silent Hedgehogs (Trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:55 (fourteen years ago)

My first ever status update, on April 2, 2007 at 22:35 was 'surviving'.

I was shamelessly miserable at that point it seems, given the follow ups over the next couple of months.

just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I've not got much on Facebook to download.

I've put that many anecdotes on here (ILX), having that as a download would be cool.

Does the archive have photos you were tagged in, uploaded by others? I would *LOVE* to get my hands on that without doing it manually (got tagged in a couple hundred wedding photos!)
