Shall we anticpate the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

Basing this on Walt having no friends and no one else in his life other than a mother he never bothers to see, a wife who is his accomplice and a brother-in-law who will arrest him if he ever finds out what his life is really like. And a load of drug people.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

His misbegotten alliance with Jesse was all that was tethering him to earth, imo. Walt doesn't seem the sort these days to even keep baby pictures in his wallet.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

Well Josh, I guess this one's an "easy baby"! There might be some late-night meltdowns. Are you annoyed we're not seeing that? We don't see the diaper changes, who gives a shit? It's like, art shows you some things and not others. Occasionally the baby has been used as part of the emotional war between Sky and Walt and we've seen that. Or as part of Sky's arsenal of tricks to get into Walt's apartment and we've seen that. We even saw Sky carting the baby around in the car a few times, just to remind us she existed. Really not sure what you want in this regard that the show is not delivering!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

But I have to admit it is sort of fun to guess.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:07 (fourteen years ago)

I want them to take the poor kid in for her shots. And occasionally take it out of its car seat. Then I'll be happy.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

everybody but Josh otm

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

Jesse isn't tethering Walt to the normal world, he's fully part and parcel of the drug thing that's engulfing more and more of his life. But it hasn't touched his kids yet.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

Josh I swear to God..

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

So you're just saying his kids aren't tainted? That's not the same as saying they're remotely on his mind these days. Unlike Skyler, who did consider absconding with her little bundle of joy to Colorado.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

it occurred to me that walt will prob just die of cancer at the end of the show

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

sry to interrupt the parenting sesh

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

A baby is not a "plot thread."

u get that this show is made up right???

Lamp, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

walt gets sent to prison where he uses chemistry to discover the cure for cancer

Lamp, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

a baby is not a plot thread, u savages

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

The idea of how fatalistic Walt might become once he realises he's actually dying of cancer is kind of mindboggling. He might just go after Gus, Mike and the entire cartel all guns blazing.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:12 (fourteen years ago)

sounds rad tbh, but what abt the baby

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

Human shield.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

No, I thought the show was real. It's not real? That's a relief, I guess.

You know, it's not like I'm asking what happened to Hank's physical therapist or something.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

The two kids are basically the only thing even remotely protecting Walt from bullets now.

yeah troo, there was def something weird going on when he told his family abt the results of his latest test

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

Oh shit.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

That' a good point. That would explain a lot more of his explicit fatalism these days. How long until Walt is the one fearlessly walking straight toward gunfire?

The purpose of the baby was to have the parallel with Jane when they put her to bed on her side instead of her back. I guess they could have done that with walt junior, but that would have been weird.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

i may regret weighing in on the whole baby boondoggle...
i can understand why you don't need her around constantly, plot-wise - but her constant absence is strange. like there doesn't seem to have ever been even a mention of them finding someone to help take care of her, we just have no idea what's happened to her most of the time. it's not like she needs to be on screen for 49 minutes, but where is she most of the time? the writers are basically leaving her out for convenience sake, imo - some people are fine with it others are not i guess.

what i've found myself wondering about is Walts hours. he often seems to be busy during daylight hours doing all sorts of stuff - but isn't that when he should be at the lab cranking out crank? when is he actually there?!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

He doesn't go in on the weekends.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

We've seen Marie looking after her and we've seen her in Skylar's car loads of times.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

oh - honestly have no recollection or Marie looking after her!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

see, that helps! the car - not so much. bad to keep baby in car for too long.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

She's in the car with Skyler, not just left out in the car like a dog.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

I know you're not supposed to leave dogs in the car either so don't even start.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

Mayo Clinic:

A car seat is designed to protect your child during travel. It's not for use as a replacement crib in your home. A 2009 study showed that sitting upright in a car seat might compress a newborn's chest and lead to lower levels of oxygen. Even mild airway obstruction can impair a child's development. Sitting in a car seat for lengthy periods can also contribute to the development of a flat spot on the back of your baby's head and worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — a chronic digestive disease. In addition, a child can easily be injured by falling out of an improperly used car seat or while sitting in a car seat that falls from an elevated surface, such as a table or counter. Although it's essential to buckle your child into a car seat during travel, don't let your child sleep or relax in the car seat for long periods of time out of the car.

Anyway, doesn't Marie work, too? Wasn't she a nurse? Wasn't there some line about her being up for a job in management or something? This is peripheral shit, absolutely, but it's weird to bring peripheral stuff up - you know, like babies - if you're not going to follow through.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

We don't see the diaper changes, who gives a shit?
i bet the baby cares

yes i have waited all this time to make that feeble joke
they should put a little red bowl cut wig on the baby and rename it "sam"

some lady (La Lechera), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

your "follow through on peripheral stuff" complaint doesn't make sense

am0n, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

"Anyway, doesn't Marie work, too?"

Probably on leave taking care of her husband! Why didn't they have a scene where she had to fill out FMLA paperwork? THAT SHIT IS EXCITING LETMETELLYOU.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

if you watch the whole four seasons back, hank only goes to the toilet about once, walt a handful of times, and marie/skyler, hardly at all! yet at no point do we see them clutching themselves in agony...what a stupid fucking show. they would be BURSTING by now.

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

it's obvious, Marie's shoplifted the baby

kinder, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

btw I'm kind of disappointed that Hank's over moon rocks now

kinder, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

they're not rocks, they're minerals!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

the thing is I don't care about how unrealistic it is either but Josh it otm enuf about just how unrealistic because if there's a newborn in the house and exactly no-one ever has to recalibrate their day around it in any way & everybody's got super-busy lives in which the newborn almost never figures then that's kinda like "the characters all have no legs!" "oh really well then how are they walking around all the time and one runs marathons?" "idk they just are, why don't you have a better imagination!"

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

x-post If you can't differentiate between bodily functions elided or ignored in 99% of all stories and a fucking baby, then I guess we'll never be on the same page.

By follow up on peripheral stuff, I mean, return to or elaborate on things brought up on the show that are peripheral to the central action. For example, buying Walt Jr. a car has been brought up numerous times, even before this season, and they've steadily followed through. Hank's interest in rocks came out of nowhere, but they've managed to gracefully ease us out of that little detour with the occasional Marie quip or the (actually kind of brilliant) idea of Hank using the rock show as an excuse to get out of the house and investigate. Or, in this last ep, bringing us back to Gus' kitchen and reemphasizing the symbolic importance of cooking for a guest, for example.

An example of not following through is Marie mentioning out of nowhere an ep or two ago about a possible promotion, though there's no indication she works, or at least works regularly. That sort of things. Not major omissions, just lazy broad-stroke shortcuts, because I'd never be wondering about, say, Marie's work habits had the show not brought them up. Though the show does have a way of following-up on things belatedly but to good effect, like Ted's tax problems.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

ah I was just messing, I don't radically disagree that it's a bit odd to never have the baby in the show.

When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

might i suggest u watch something else for ur peripheral subject needs, perhaps this
