He won 45 caps and retired early!

- was playing against dogshit teams like arsenal and bolton

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

i think he's often been played in less than optimal position by ferguson, sometimes at less than full fitness. I recognise his level of general effort and 'spirit' ugh, his power, surprising pace, a deft touch when striking a dead ball, an unstoppable shot and a much improved ability to finish from a cross. I'm not a blinkered roo-hater, imo, but i set all of that against what i've said above and i don't get the result that spells out 'top class' tbh.

Let's see your list of "top class" players in the Premier League then

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

45 caps with the team that failed to win a single game in 92 or qualify for 94.. then being not as good as zidane

must stop trolling and get back to work

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

current or previous NN

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

Current

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

All of that was all Ginola's fault though, if you're looking for a truly shit player.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

current top/world class players in the epl, not exhaustive:

English- ferdinand, a cole, j cole
Foreign- Silva, kompany, aguero, van persie, drogba, berbatov, s hunt

I'd prob include gerrard ahead of rooney, tbh, but the past two years prob knock him out of it.

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:08 (fourteen years ago)

Poor Luka :(

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a J Cole I don't know about?

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

didn't want to include spurs players tbh, matt

NV if you have another j cole that's able to do stuff messi can't, i've not heard

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

s hunt

At last, some recognition

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

Seems to me that if you're gonna exclude Gerrard cos of the last 2 years then Cole's had a longer lean spell than that

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

Kompany but no Vidic? I'd put Rooney in the same category as Van Persie and Drogba (who is pretty crap at the moment). Also, I know you're a Berbatov stan but including him is ridiculous.

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

ffs cole is a joke

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, J. Cole's been rubbish for years. Pretty much since the second half of the England v. Sweden game.

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

Hunt's not a joke tho right?

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

vidic- yes. Was off the top of my head tbf.

Drogba sustained form that put him among the world's best in his position for a couple years, but i take yr point. Injuries limit rvp so i take that point too, but those aside rvp is a different level of performance to rooney, and his injuries aren't due to kebabs and hookers

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)

oh right i get the J Cole joke now, sorry i don't remember most of the asinine bullshit England players spout in interviews, i only ever read about it on here

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

Hunt is actually the real life version of what some people on here seem to think Rooney is

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

inclusion of hunt is pushing it, inclusion of berbatov is frankly unquestionable

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

Hunt's work rate is better than Rooney's for a start

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

aguero is actually the real life version of what some people on here seem to think rooney is

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

\(^o^)/

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

forgot about Tevez

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

I'd include Nani and Suarez as well

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

Torres is shit now?

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

League goals/assists/appearances EPL last 7 seasons
13/16/38
16/8/35
11/10/37
10/8/24
12/10/37
22/17/36
10/4/24

pandemic, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

nani might get there, suarez not yet, torres in that twilight area with drogba and, tbf, rooney, peak gerrard, maybe modric, few others

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:32 (fourteen years ago)

tevez has long made me uneasy tbh, tevez is the admission of 'world class' that i must long o'erleap before i even want rooney mentioned in any such bracket

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

Everyone seems to forget now that Drogba had whole seasons where he just couldn't be bothered and played well below par.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

'peak' comes into it, i think, and then you have to consider how long 'peak' was- rooney 'peaks' for a year then goes to shit. Torres at peak is unquestionable, rooney at peak is effective, powerful and i'd consider him

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

Drogba's scoring record for Chelsea

2010/11 11
2009/10 29
2008/09 5
2007/08 8
2006/07 20
2005/06 12
2004/05 10

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

Rooney's, what, 26? He might be just hitting peak now.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

a year *at best*, so far in his career.

Drogba struggles for sustained form matt, yes- but like rvp, when he's fit and playing he's so obviously on a higher level than rooney that it bewilders me to see them compared ability-wise

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

Rooney's got 8 more league goals than Lampard over the last 7 seasons. Lampard plays midfield.

pandemic, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

irrelevant

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

But, as Matt says, Rooney may now be hitting his peak years.

pandemic, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

The positional/tactical difference between Lampard and Rooney is not as extreme as 'plays midfield' vs. 'plays forward' would imply, though.

boxall, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

Why is his position irrelevant?

pandemic, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

Positioned right outside the burger van amirite?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

Because goals are only one aspect of his game. Also, at a conservative estimate i'd say 75% of FF's goals were deflections

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

a forward's sole duty isn't to score goals any more than a midfielder's sole duty is to give the ball to the forward

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

if rooney plays two seasons uninterrupted in his current form then i'm wrong and he's world class. Will freely admit it.

That's my original question/point, kinda- what's rooney's true level, why the huge disparity, why such frequent swoops around it, yadda yadda. With rvp it's injury, with drogba it's motivation, with rooney it's both with added 'wow he's got an awful touch'

talking heads, quiet smith (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

Rooney's got 8 more league goals than Lampard over the last 7 seasons

Rooney is 25 years old.

In the 7 seasons prior to turning 25 Lampard scored 35 league goals, Rooney scored over 100.

a hawk... watching my vagina? (onimo), Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

tbf to Lampard though, he's second all-time in the the assists chart. Really has been incredibly effective over the years

Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

Also up until last season Lampard was seemingly never injured. He's played an incredible number of games per season.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

Lampard's prob got as many assists as Rooney as well. So that's another aspect of his game. I guess I just rate Lampard a lot higher than most folks around here.
xp
