Rooney's so obviously the most gifted English player since at least Gascoigne, it seems hardly worth saying. If some hypothetical swap deal came along where Utd could trade him for Player X, how many feasible Player Xs are there to make that deal even worth thinking about?

Last season is the only truly bad one Rooney has had since he's been at Utd. A lot of the time he had to deal with being played out of position too.

Agreed, and I think a lot of it was to do with a hangover from his injury when he was rushed back too early (against Bayern?) - it took him months to look anything like fit and sharp after that setback.

The idea that Rooney is some clogger with no technical ability who somehow muddles through on effort alone is so infuriating.

3: A staggeringly poor level of general fitness described as 'bad luck with injuries'

considering essentially every injury Rooney has suffered has either been ankle or metatarsal, i don't see how that has anything to do with lack of fitness.

it's a good return for a utd attacking midfielder, you'd maybe want more for a winger and you'd want to double it for a 'world class' striker onimo

the most remarkable thing about wayne rooney is his longevity in a ruthless utd team imo. I'd score ten a season meself sure.

two main reasons rooney is suddenly looking good again are

- no recent injuries, didn't come back from summer after dispiriting failure with england or just generally looking fat and slovenly
- he is finally playing in exactly the sort of set up that suits him -- nominally withdrawn striker in 4-4-1-1, with hernandez and two fast winger to stretch the defence, he can move from a #10 position to a #9 depending on the phase of play

- It's probably a while until the next prostitute revelation as well so probably reasonably happy at home and undistracted

i think he's often been played in less than optimal position by ferguson, sometimes at less than full fitness. I recognise his level of general effort and 'spirit' ugh, his power, surprising pace, a deft touch when striking a dead ball, an unstoppable shot and a much improved ability to finish from a cross. I'm not a blinkered roo-hater, imo, but i set all of that against what i've said above and i don't get the result that spells out 'top class' tbh.

Drogba sustained form that put him among the world's best in his position for a couple years, but i take yr point. Injuries limit rvp so i take that point too, but those aside rvp is a different level of performance to rooney, and his injuries aren't due to kebabs and hookers
