it wd seem grossly unfair if a dick was punished for saying something dickish in public, unrelated to his job, when thousands of dicks are saying the same dickish thing every day, on internet messageboards for example

like if Nathan Eccleston, 20, was responsible for bringing those responsible for 9/11 to justice

I can only assume that Dan Brown has written a book about 9/11 that Nathan Ecclestone, 20, read on holiday?

what is this illuminary thing?

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:23 (fourteen years ago)

don't think 9/11 could be

a) accident
b) caused by a secret society

the pinefox, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:30 (fourteen years ago)

i like the idea of it being an accident. like a bunch of pilots just got mad wasted that morning and forgot they had the lives of 100s in their hands, also fell asleep at the plane equiv. of the wheel while these buildings came closer

Airplane 3: Why you don't tint yr windows, pimp

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

It is possible the pilots were distracted by listening to an audiobook about the Illuminati, which caused them to stray catastrophically off course. Making the tragedy both an accident and the fault of the Illuminati.

xpost UptoEleven ... the Rs did have two cleared off the line, one sitter missed and one cross narrowly missed. So "didn't really look like scoring" seems a little bit harsh.

Trudi Styler, the Creator (ithappens), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 12:56 (fourteen years ago)

As I said I only caught the second half and wasn't giving it my full attention but it mostly seemed that the Newcastle defence wasn't having to do too much to keep them out. I wasn't saying that a win for them would have been the wrong result, just that they weren't exactly robbed of it.

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

i think Upt0eleven has a point in so far as we didnt look particularly patient and methodical about our attacking work, but then that was to be expected really. can't deny krul barely had a save to make however.

quite a few pundits seem to have concluded we just need a finisher which seems more than little simplistic not to mention negligent of bothroyd's pretty decent hold up play. we suffered fairly classic symptoms of playing 4231/433 without a lethal £30m powerhouse striker up top; will be interesting to see how often warnock will be tempted/deny the urge to sacrifice foundational solidity and switch to a 442. (in my opinion he should have rolled the dice yesterday.)

r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

actually another thing warnock could have done - which i'm more surprised he didnt - is take derry off, move barton back alongside faurlin and have dj campbell in the centre of the three behind bothroyd.

not quite sure i see what barton's role will be tbh.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

Got to say, Derry had a blinder yesterday. Wouldn't have taken him off. Not sure Barton really quite knew what his role was yesterday. I'd say his was the weakest of the new signings' performances - too many passes went astray, too many moves broke down when they reached him, but I didn't see it as a cause for worry. Very impressed by both full backs: pace, defending and crossing all in evidence last night.

I can see Bothroyd and Campbell acting as a classic big man/little man partnership, but a strict four-man midfield causes problems: with two out of Derry, Faurlin and Barton in the middle, and Taarabt and SWP on the wings, you'd have the problem of Taarabt losing his influence on games stuck out on the left, or exposing the full backs if he cuts inside and gets caught out of position. I think the 4-2-3-1 is predicated on SWP and Taarabt probably outscoring Bothroyd over the course of the season.

Upt0eleven ... Second half was no great shakes, but first half was a very good performance by QPR.

Trudi Styler, the Creator (ithappens), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

agree with all of that. thought game passed barton by while qpr had possession

hipstery nayme (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:37 (fourteen years ago)

Wolves ‘Superman’ Stephen Ward could be thrown up front if Steven Fletcher misses Saturday’s clash against Queens Park Rangers.

Fletcher is a doubt with a groin injury picked up in the 2-0 weekend defeat against Tottenham.

Manager Mick McCarthy said: “I’ve always got ‘Superman’ – Stephen Ward, who can play up there.

“The team comes before anyone’s personal gain and what’s lovely about ‘Wardy’ is he takes that view.

“I’ve got another good left-back in George Elokobi and, if I can put another good left-back in and have the other playing up front, that’s got to be the way."

hipstery nayme (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

Can't help but feel the more "versatile" a team sports player is the more likely he is actually shit. In this case ward, a not very good left back, can play up front, presumably at an even worse level. You start to think he has no actual position at all.

i think it's more or less universally true that every utility player should be played at fullback

especially owen hargreaves, john o'shea and steven gerrard

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

xxp

almost. Wardy started out as a forward, couldn't cut it and was reinvented by McCarthy as a Championship-quality LB who plays left mid sometimes. his LB performances for us have been improved this season, tbf, along with a general improvement across the back four since Roger Johnson arrived and presumably asked them politely to pull their fucking fingers out.

of course if we had more than 3 first team strikers we wouldn't be in this situation would we Mick YOU FUCKING GRINNING EEJIT??

on a lighter note tho, this sudden "oh shit Ward's playing up front" is a direct knock-on off of our lack of signings during the summer. you'd think somebody might've guessed that Fletcher, Doyle and Seb mightn't be enough on their own for a season, like.

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Travelling up to Wolverhampton on Sat to see the game. Sold it to my wife as "Why don't you visit your stroke-ridden aunt near Wolverhampton? I'll find something to do with the boy while you do that. Oh, look - QPR are there that day!"

is ward really a utility man per se or one of the rarer breed of striker/defenders like ian marshall, steve walsh and probably seven other former leicester players? is there a difference?

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)

The third and final substitute for Chelsea was Robert Huth, taking over from Cole and endeavouring with understandable futility to throw his considerable weight around in attack. With all of 20 minutes left, the Nou Camp crowd had already been tuning up for inevitable celebration.

For all the complaints about Defoe and Crouch, i'm reminded it wasn't that long ago Spurs were forced to play Gary Doherty up front.

A little bit like Peter Crouch but with more mobility (ShariVari), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

one thing i'm surprised about is after the success (kinda), mick had with o'hara and mancienne, and with sturridge and welbeck etc. having good seasons a year ago.... AND with City and Spurs and Chelsea etc. all trying to get down their wage bill or get potentially good youngsters away, that he didn't get more involved with the loan market? I mean sure maybe not someone like Ade would go but a MB Diouf or Bendtner or Coulibaly or Santa Cruz or Sturridge were all maybe options? Options that may have walked into yr first xi, all without a transfer fee?

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

Sturridge in the Chelsea 25, so he wasn't an option for anyone this time round. I'd imagine the wages of Santa Cruz especially, and Diouf and Bendtner to a lesser extent would be an obstacle for Wolves - who run at a profit, remember - to take on within their budgetary structure. Add to that the fact that Bendtner is also indisputably shit.

Trudi Styler, the Creator (ithappens), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure you could afford Diouf

Number None, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

Man U wages? Even for a young player, they've got to be right at the upper end of the Wolves pay scale, I would have thought. To turn a profit they must have wages hammered right down as far as they can go.

Trudi Styler, the Creator (ithappens), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

Wage structure is definitely a part of it but there's a stubbornness about McCarthy that makes you think he will stick with some players no matter how obvious it is that they just aren't good enough. The dude rates work ethic ridiculously high I think - which is fair enough for 80 percent of yr team, but you've got to allow for the odd highly-skilled layabout imo.

Chapman Pincher Overdrive (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

"I think he's a typical British player," said the United manager, who left Rio Ferdinand behind as a precaution ahead of Sunday's visit of Chelsea and revealed Nemanja Vidic is a fortnight away from returning from a calf problem.

"There have been British players over the last few years, maybe for the last decades, who have similar great qualities that make them great players, whether it's a [Paul] Gascoigne, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law. The similarities are that the boy has great courage, wants to play all the time and has incredible stamina. These are added extras to the talent he has. In terms of a Brazilian, you'd say Pelé. He was a very aggressive attacker also who could look after himself, so can Rooney. They have similarities that way: strength, speed, determination, but he's white, completely white."
