Briefly, she mulls over what to do with the painting of a pair of moccasins on the wall. It came with the trailer and is so hideous and comically southwestern that at first I thought Deschanel had put it there as a joke. Irony isn’t her style, though. “I’m worried if I pull these weird things down, they’re going to be mad at me,” she says. “So I’m trying to figure out something I can put oooooover this.” She demonstrates by holding up a picture of smiling lambs she happens to have lying around.

She has a band, of course, a folk-rock duo with M. Ward. As half of She & Him, she sings Shirelles harmonies, plays piano and ukulele, and writes most of the songs—well enough that, as Pitchfork.com wrote in a stunned, positive review, she’s somehow avoided “a Hollywood archetype: the actor-turned-singer-turned-punchline.”

“Kitsch causes two tears to flow in quick succession. The first tear says: How nice to see children running on the grass! The second tear says: How nice to be moved, together with all mankind, by children running on the grass! It is the second tear that makes kitsch kitsch."

I'm not going to argue about kitsch overall, but I think Kuindera's essential point is that kitsch derives from an inability or desire to deal with reality in a healthy way. I worry that Zooey may be tempted by kitsch.
― em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Monday, 12 September 2011 18:28 (twelve years ago) link
idk if kitsch pertains to irl experiences tbqh, but it's one of those words like hipster that people use to suit themselves

possibly, i just barely know what 'etsy' is beyond a pejorative cultural signifier on ilx, so i'm probably underestimating how MOR that demographic is (xpost)

ZD's movie career isn't exactly setting the world on fire (it says it all that The Happening is her 2nd biggest hit of the last few years), so her sister's TV paychecks probably started looking pretty good to her
