Also, my friend bought the Russell's Reserve Rye for me. She'll be here next week... Going to be my first ever rye whiskey!

I'm not really sure I can tell a difference between all of these ryes. I guess I need to educate my taste buds more or something. I've tried the Sazerac, Rittenhouse, Overholt and Bulleit, and they all seem pretty comparable to me, except that the Overholt is something like $18 and the rest are all around $24.

any difference between dickel and dickel sour mash? one had the label like in the pic above, other one had a green-ish label?

i haven't talked about weller 12 year enough in here.

i'm a big fan of Connemara, which is what I'm currently drinking--a peated single malt from the west coast of Ireland. smoky and briny like 10-year Laphroaig but a bit lighter and smoother. I picked it up when I was in Ireland a few months ago. i haven't seen it for sale around the East Coast much but i believe you can get it in California

This is awesome and very affordable. Makes a fantastic sour.

given its provenance i had every reason to be suspicious of that bottling but i'm with you, it's very good.

none of the va stores have willet, have to go into dc to find it.

bought booker's for a small get-together last night. mmm.

Willett pot still is unimpressive but all the limited bottlings are pretty amazing. Note the high proof!

Can't wait for payday so I can go buy a fancy bottle of single malt.

weller antique - 107 proof, no age

weller special reserve - 90 proof, 7 years i think?

weller 12 year - 90 proof, 12 years

the other two are good budget bourbons but it's the 12 that is special

Got a new job a few weeks ago, and got a bottle of Blanton's from a friend in congratulations. So so so so good. Mmmmmmm!!!!

some quick notes:

ancient ancient age - sweet, good rye character. abrupt finish. can't complain - 17 bucks for 10 y.o. whiskey!
michter's bourbon (someone brought this) - wtf is it? not kentucky or straight according to the label. thin body. harsh finish. kinda shitty.
weller 12 - deep, rolling waves of caramel and vanilla. smooth. fireplace bourbon as someone said.
old bardstown 101 - rye spice, grassy or plantlike quality. quick finish. good no-bullshit sipping.
turkey 101 - the turkey flavor profile is so easy to understand. heat, spice, a bit sweet in the finish. not very refined but that's its main good quality.
elijah craig 18 - bizarre nose. muted flavor--a little boring? need to try again. still haven't found a heaven hill product that speaks to me.
4 roses sb (oesq recipe) - go to the 4 roses website sometime--when you get in the big splash word is "MELLOW" which i have to lol at because 4 roses bourbons are almost cerebral--tons of flavors and overtones, many of which are not obvious. this one is medium body, medium sweetness with these odd banana-bubblegum flavors going on. really brings the complexity and totally delicious.
william larue weller - sweetness bomb! 120-something proof, it's basically like drinking both the creme brulee and the blowtorch. big, big flavors.

i need to re-taste the ryes because whatever was left of my pallet got absolutely wrecked by the weller.

The quality of poitín was highly variable, depending on the skill of the distiller and the quality of his equipment. If poorly produced it can contain dangerous amounts of methanol and can blind or kill.
