they were also out of bulleit, tbh
drinking Bulleit rye right now. i haven't had it in a while, since i posted about it earlier on this thread. it's hitting me nicely right now. a couple of ice cubes make the difference.

We stocked up on Rittenhouse 100 a few years ago when the stocks were running low and the prices were heading up; I think we paid $13/bottle at the time, and it seems to be more like $20 now. Still have 15 bottles left. Definitely a good investment.

I found this website.. http://www.abc.state.va.us/Pricelist/STRAIGHT_RYE_WHISKEY.html
― just call me brian (krakow), Saturday, 10 September 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
I've suggested/asked for one of...
- Rittenhouse 100 Proof Bottled In Bond Rye Whiskey- Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve Rye Aged 6 Years- Sazerac Rye 6 Years Old
Based on likely ease of availability, price and decent reviews.
― just call me brian (krakow), Saturday, 10 September 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
You're gonna love the Rittenhouse and Sazerac on their own, use the Wild Turkey Reserve for cocktails
― fear itself (Ówen P.), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)
Catoctin creek is awesome bc I have bottled it and the couple who makes it are a+ awesome! But it doesn't taste like most ryes at all - it's very round. I hate using words like that bc it's so douchey but I can't think of anything else!
I like redemption rye, but it's not on the list :(

Yeah, I don't want to put my friend to too much trouble by asking for non-big names that she'd feel obliged to hunt for... All of this stuff is exotic to me in Glasgow, so it's grand whatever!
― just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)
Hey Krakow, I am in Glasgow most new years and live in DC. Expect to be back there this year and live near a good bottle shop so plan ahead!
― ljubljana, Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)
Oooh! Thank you ljubljana, totally going to take you up on that implicit very kind offer!
― just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)
Also, my friend bought the Russell's Reserve Rye for me. She'll be here next week... Going to be my first ever rye whiskey!
― just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:43 (fourteen years ago)
I'm not really sure I can tell a difference between all of these ryes. I guess I need to educate my taste buds more or something. I've tried the Sazerac, Rittenhouse, Overholt and Bulleit, and they all seem pretty comparable to me, except that the Overholt is something like $18 and the rest are all around $24.
― the wheelie king (wk), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)
any difference between dickel and dickel sour mash? one had the label like in the pic above, other one had a green-ish label?
― Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Monday, 19 September 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)
i haven't talked about weller 12 year enough in here.
best sub-$40 bourbon currently made.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)
yeah weller is really decent for how cheap it is!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)
i'm a big fan of Connemara, which is what I'm currently drinking--a peated single malt from the west coast of Ireland. smoky and briny like 10-year Laphroaig but a bit lighter and smoother. I picked it up when I was in Ireland a few months ago. i haven't seen it for sale around the East Coast much but i believe you can get it in California
― geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)
This is awesome and very affordable. Makes a fantastic sour.

given its provenance i had every reason to be suspicious of that bottling but i'm with you, it's very good.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 13:39 (fourteen years ago)
none of the va stores have willet, have to go into dc to find it.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

Willett pot still is unimpressive but all the limited bottlings are pretty amazing. Note the high proof!
― I DIED, Thursday, 29 September 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)
Can't wait for payday so I can go buy a fancy bottle of single malt.

― call all destroyer, Friday, 30 September 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
haha I am just eager to have a taste. like it better than bulleit.
btw saw weller too but it was like 'antique' or something - not the 12 yr yer talking about right
― dayo, Friday, 30 September 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, there are three wellers in those short fat bottles
weller antique - 107 proof, no age
weller special reserve - 90 proof, 7 years i think?
weller 12 year - 90 proof, 12 years
the other two are good budget bourbons but it's the 12 that is special
