I feel like they provoke the same kind of "you guys" eye-rolling from women.

Deschanel's an okay actress who comes off worse because most of her roles are written as male-indie fantasies by and for men.

Which must be why I don't hate her...

to whatever extent i've even heard of anyone discuss CM it seems like she's well liked by women, although she seems like one of those """"famous"""" types who gets an Oscar nod and a bunch of roles in movies that weren't necessarily big hits before people in America really have any idea who she is and is still in the middle of that process

Love Michelle. Loathe Carey.

Zooey at least seems like she has some personality (for better or worse), instead of being a vacant pursed mouth porcelain doll

yeah noone will ever want to drown Mulligan

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

I don't usually loathe celebrities until they do something egregious or have annoying voices or something. CM is at the very distant periphery of my consciousness (until someone mentioned 'An Ed' I wouldn't have put her together with the person mentioned wrt laBeouf) and that's all I know her from; a cute film that I barely remember. She's cute. We'll see if that turns into anything.

Don't people hate Carey for the same reason they dislike Zooey Deschanel: wide-eyed doll-like ingenues that "sensitive" dudes fawn over?

CM in her movies isn't an ingenue exactly (she's a gamine, if that's a noun), have no idea what her 'star brand' is, but it's not like zoey's whatever it is. zo-zo's is pretty toxic at this point.

h8 sensitive dudes tho

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

Gamine is a noun not an adjective.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't followed Zooey enough to see the toxicity. I'm awfully sensitive but I'm kinda lazy.

em vee equals pea queue (Michael White), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

gamine can be an adjective

anyway, CM's brand probably more towards zoey's 'your highness'* co-star nathalie portman: small, short-haired fine-featured ladies who do the acting

*a truly toxic film

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

Can't remember being impressed by Michelle Williams in anything, Carey Mulligan is always pretty good but has pretty much only been in dire movies.

i liked carey mulligan when i first saw her in the Bleak House miniseries, in fact i am annoyed to realize that she doesn't somehow permanently exist in victorian london.

Oh, I thought she was awful in Brokeback Mountain. x-post

Melissa W, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

speaking of zooey being toxic was there ever a thread for "our idiot brother"? her wide-eyed loveliness was really grating in that film

six or less and racist (reddening), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)

This reminds me that I still want to see 'Blue Valentine'.

I love her though

really wish there was a clip of michelle williams singing 'i honestly love you' into nixon's tape recorder but ours is a cruel and injust world. carey mulligan seems cute enough, has yet to appear in any movie i have the slightest interest in seeing.

goole, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)

carey, even though I've only seen her on Doctor Who and the Bleak House miniseries. She was way more memorable in both those shows and the ten minutes of An Education that I caught than all of Michelle Williams roles put together (scrolling through her imdb page, I've seen BM, Synecdoche, Deception, and I'm Not There and pretty much forgot she was in all of them).

Roz, Friday, 9 September 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

was there ever a thread for "our idiot brother"?

kept meaning to see this but couldn't work up the get-up-and-go for some reason

good story i know

Wonder if CM's Shame role will change anyone's mind. (Doubtful.)

there's probably some crossover there but it feels different to me since CM hasn't taken any unpleasant stabs at being a singer or comic actress yet

i love michelle williams esp how from her dawson's creek beginnings she has blossomed into like legitimate actress, carey mulligan seems kindof pointless she is like the indie is the new mainstream kate bosworth

plax (ico), Saturday, 10 September 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

like there is essentially no point in her existing

plax (ico), Saturday, 10 September 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

Williams has a depth of character and gravitas she can bring to the table that Carey doesn't yet, from what I've seen of her. Surprised at the dislike of CM. Williams is the clear winner for me.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 10 September 2011 11:50 (fourteen years ago)

Williams was awesome in blue valentine and she looks like a yung Shirley MacLaine

otm, and even when she was on Dawson's Creek you could tell there was an adventurousness about her (around the same time she was pretty good in If These Walls Could Talk 2). Wendy & Lucy made me really aware of how much she'd matured, and she just killed it in Blue Valentine

billy, Saturday, 10 September 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

omg Carey Mulligan was FANTASTIC on Doctor Who

Friend told me last night that I HAD to see Never Let Me Go - she thought Michelle Williams was in it.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 10 September 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

Much love for Carey, but Michelle is Binoche-like in her ability to get more beautiful as the years move on.

― Gukbe, Friday, September 9, 2011 6:43 PM (Yesterday)

^^^i like this, yeah

I think we'll have a better idea about Carey later this year when we've had a chance to see both DRIVE and SHAME. But she's very good in AN EDUCATION and also NEVER LET ME GO.

BLUE VALENTINE is bad, much worse than AN EDUCATION, which has a few missteps (Paris + ending) but is mostly very fun comfort food.

MEEK'S CUTOFF forever.

✇ (Tape Store), Saturday, 10 September 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

haha. carey mully crushes in that imho, i don't really take plax's opinions srsly on anything but 'there is essentially no point in her existing'? idk where this comes from, ditto the other haters. michelle williams has done a lot more and so most of it is bound to be indifferent. she did a good british accent in that one film.

dawsons creek was a thing that existed, i doubt it's better or worse than 90210 or whatever kids of 2011 watch.

How is this even a contest. I really liked CM in Blink but that's about it, but Michelle is wonderful.

Joan Collins has blasted Kate Winslet's "awful" hair and "dreadful" dress sense.

The 78-year-old actress is stunned by the Oscar winner's disappointing outfit choices and slammed her "ghastly" accessorising at the recent Venice Film Festival.

When shown a picture of the Reader star, Joan - who is famous for her glamorous look - said: "Oh, that's a dreadful dress. The worst dress. And ghastly shoes and an awful hairstyle. I'm sorry."

As well as being critical of Kate, Joan also blasted singer Adele, Gwyneth Paltrow - who recently described her late grandmother as a "****" - and admitted she is unhappy that An Education star Carey Mulligan is to star in a forthcoming production of My Fair Lady.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Is (Gwyneth) the one who called her grandmother a rude word on air? I thought that was pretty shocking.

"I don't want to comment on Carey Mulligan. I can't believe she's playing Eliza Doolittle in a new movie.

"Adele is a very good singer, very, very talented, but she has a terrible hairpiece."

Once you've gone Nolan Miller, everything/everbody else is just shabby.

It's a lonely world being the only person who can't stand Williams. :(
Don't think I have any idea who Mulligan is though...
