I think his point is that Bale created an awful lot of chances that Crouch wasn't good enough to put away, or was in the wrong place to get near.

Matt DC, Monday, 5 September 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, work called.

Yes pf- matt has it. Not only was crouch not capable of finishing the chances created, his absence of presence or ability to collect and hold the ball totally undermined entire nascent passages of play. Bale's powerful forward running off the ball was time and again wasted by virtue of the fact that crouch's touch, passing or plain failure to head or challenge in the air meant he would merely find himself the wrong side of his full back on what was already a burgeoning counter attack for the opposition.

Modric and (to an extent) lennon were also wasted for the most part whenever crouc was given the responsibilty for the attack.

I'm no fan of adebayor, but i fully expect his fuller presence to bring about a serious improvement in the effectiveness of the rest of our attack.

even blue cows get the girls (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

agree that Adebayor cd well make Bale's light shine brighter in particular

Frogbs (Pray Like Aretha Franklin (in Whiteface)) (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 September 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

strongly agree, DM

I felt all this many times, watching Crouch being incredibly useless.

I have also always been deeply annoyed when Crouch misses an easy chance and laughs about it.

I don't like Adebayor but must reserve judgement on his effect on the team.

the pinefox, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

presumably you're no fans of adebayor purely in a character sense? as a footballer surely there's no argument he's very capable and effective when he's got his head screwed on (which isnt as seldom as people like to make out tbf).

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

"In this respect Crouch can almost seem like a parody of an English centre-forward, a living satire of those "traditional strengths", football's version of a braces-twanging pearly king or a champion Morris dancer."

^ quite liked this line in barney ronay's otherwise routine appreciation of crouch fwiw

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

i left out crouch's off the ball movement, another hugely important facet of a lone striker's game with regard to effectiveness of the wingers. So easy to mark, so predictable (a defender could have gone to the back post andnwaited for him to arrive, usually) and so unhelpful for a winger cutting in or a midfielder arriving late.

Vdv had a knack of being where the ball would arrive once crouch miscontrolled it, one only hopes that he comes back fit and sharp and with more to his game than that.

even blue cows get the girls (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

rtc yeah, character reservations is right, though if i'm honest only as far as it translates on-field. He pulled that young arsenal team down around him the season before he left. I hate being left so dependent on him but when he plays he's ... I hate to say unplayable but y'know

even blue cows get the girls (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

shit, le Fondre ended up at Reading?

yeah right i missed this too! i think every fan of every club in the country (besides knobs who havent heard of him) felt a slight twinge of envy when they saw that - if he were called adam watson then hey ho, you sometimes get the odd lower league flash in the pan but chuck in some of that le tiss channel islands swag and he just becomes irresistible

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

Glenville Adam J. le Fondre (born 2 December 1986), more commonly known as Adam Le Fondre, is an English footballer who plays for Reading as a striker.

!!

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

think we need Ken Chu to explore the amusing complexities of a player finding himself unplayable

feels like something Ken could do

the pinefox, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:16 (fourteen years ago)

in fact I wonder if Ken should be given a run in Ronay's slot.

the pinefox, Monday, 5 September 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

I don't particularly care that we've got Adebayor, fuck it we've already got Gallas and that turned out alright.

But yeah he's obviously going to be a better goalscorer than anyone in our squad at the moment. Also, he always scored against us.

Some mention of ward upthread. He makes you wish kilbane was playing.

Yeah.

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

gotta say he's improved a bit for us over the last few months but yeah he's not really Premier League class never mind international

Frogbs (Pray Like Aretha Franklin (in Whiteface)) (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 September 2011 13:03 (fourteen years ago)

depends who you're playing tbf i think he'd prob have the turkhmeni winger in his pocket

even blue cows get the girls (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

he's not really Premier League class never mind international

So can expect to see him playing for Celtic at some point no doubt

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Monday, 5 September 2011 13:11 (fourteen years ago)

you do seem to like taking shite Left Backs off our hands

Frogbs (Pray Like Aretha Franklin (in Whiteface)) (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 September 2011 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

This is such obvious fake foresight, weren't you saying Man United should sign him a couple of years ago?

?

I dunno, I used to watch a lot of Real back when they were Dutch and thinking the same. Also remember when he signed saying 'lol he's gonna have a great half season' and being p much the only person (although I think nakh may have also joined in) saying it was for a reason bayern didn't buy him when they had the chance. I may have said Utd needed a VDV type of player though.

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

do we need a seperate garry cook thread before this becomes a giant shitstorm?

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe gary cook is a total cunt. a sad day for britain that this erstwhile honourable and dignified man has been found to be a bounder of the highest order.

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

like i know football execs arent the nicest of people but mocking onouhas mum for suffering from cancer is some next level skeletor shit

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

it's a bit murky/ confused as to what's happened tbh? Onouha's mum got an email with the word 'riddled' in it that was meant for someone else- the suggestion being that it was a nasty reference to her illness?

It seems a bit thin tbh but i'm assuming there's more to goon than that, right?

Jolout Boy (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

its garry cook so i am presuming that thats the city publicity version of 'went to her door, rung the bell, left a flaming faeces display in the shape of 'haha u got cancer, gc' and ran away'

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

but why would he...
i mean what possible?
and then to?

You know?

Jolout Boy (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

'Cook has denied he sent the message, claiming his account was hacked.'

why the fuck would you say this if all you did was say 'ravaged with cancer'? wouldn't you just say 'sorry i never knew that was an impolite term and i won't use it again'

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

cook is obv a total wanker, he has a long history.

anyway your collective idol speculation is bizarre to me, tho possibly no more bizarre than the fact that the bbc seems not to have characteristically wussed out of telling the entire story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/14797327.stm

xpost...

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

you're all still wrong, SHE said "ravaged with cancer" and he seems to have implied "ho ho ravaged, did you give her a good seeing to brian, lol" is how i'm reading it.

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

ok there is more detail then.

bbc.co.uk takes years to load anything at best of times, and i'm on a phone, so i'm workin blind here.

Jolout Boy (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

Defender Onuoha's mother, who acts as his agent, had previously sent a message to Marwood and Cook, explaining that while she was "ravaged with cancer" it would not prevent her negotiating on behalf of her son.

Dr Onuoha then received an email, allegedly from Cook and addressed "Brian", which apparently ridiculed her use of language in describing her illness.

The email is reported to have read: "Ravaged with it!!...I don't know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at Nike. G".

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

xp

Saw this earlier, thought they were insinuating "ravaged" as some kind of Manc version of "smashed it"?

So glad they lived down to my expectations.

James Mitchell, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Like LG said, etc.

James Mitchell, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, sorry. but still:

Dr Onuoha told the Sun: "When I opened my emails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer

...

insulting email v. cancer? which would you be more afraid of getting

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

w in the actual fuck

Ok, it was a slightly strange thing to say in an email (imo) but to make mock of it is ... It's insane?

Seperate issue then as to how moronic you have to be to send the message back to her

Incredible

Jolout Boy (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

has nultathustra spaken about this yet?

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

does ravaged have a predominantly sexual connotation? not to my knowledge?

i just assumed cook had a giggle about her flamboyant use of the word in the middle of sorting a contract dispute and was giving his fellow negotiator a nudge in the ribs

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think so

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

"ravaged" definitely has Catherine Cookson-y "raped" connotations

placeholder for weak pun (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

ravished/ravaged HILAIR pun is always a possibility tho

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

i think of 'ravaged' as a 18th century sort of sexual connotation...

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

ravaged is the new raked

diouf est le papa du foot galsen merde lè haters (nakhchivan), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

ya i have ravaged as something a lord might do to a milkmaid alright

Jolout Boy (darraghmac), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

not buying it tbh

cook is a moron for saying his thing was hacked though

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

there doesn't need to be the sexual connotation for the email to be massively crass, is the thing

placeholder for weak pun (Noodle Vague), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

doesnt hurt doe

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

ravaged defo has sexual connotations, not least when cook is going "eh eh eh eh" basically in that message. there's blatant sexual connotations there. it's not in itself some act of unspeakable evil but once written down in the public sphere any form of joke or jibe even remotely connected to or directed at someone's terminal cancer is going to see the perpetrator hauled over the coals repeatedly. he's history.

LocalGarda, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

but what if he was hacked????????!?!?

like the kids do these days?????!?!?

Jay-Z ft. Kanye 'Big Hat Club (Spiritual Big Hat Club Jazz Remix)' (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 September 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

not to ride out for the cookster but her bringing it up like that in the middle of trying to bump wee nedum's contract up another 20k might also be seen as crass idk

in any case twisting direct quote "ravaged by cancer" into "ravaged by 'it' lol!" seems so feebly convoluted as to be farfetched

r|t|c, Monday, 5 September 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

"the old cancer's been giving me a right good shagging lately lads but if you can chuck in personalised number plates we might strike a deal by tea"
