what's danny's like? i want to go dancing somewhere. reviews on yelp aren't helpful: "it's hipster hell." "no, it's not" "yes it is" "no, it's yuppie hell" and so on.

it's so dark in there, how can anybody tell a hipster from a yuppie?

well, my experience has been that it's pretty low-key until about 10 or so then it get's kinda fratty/jocky. i prefer to grab one of the tables in the back and keep my interactions with the ambercrombie and felch set to a minimum. it's not always over-run but it's always a possibility. as a rule i'm usually let down by people in general so that doesn't bother too much. if you have a high tolerance for douchebaggery you can do a lot worse.

Danny's is not especially good for dancing, I don't think... it's a converted house. But overall, I have no problems with the place at all. I went there a lot my first couple years in Chicago. Not as much anymore, but that has nothing to do with the establishment.

yeah, it's not a destination i usually choose but a friend of mine likes it and when we go out for drinks and not just hanging out in the neighborhood we'll usually wind up there. we both love soul music though so that has something to do with it.

I never noticed frat-ness. It's possible, though, that the neighborhood is changing so fast that the crowd is totally different than last time I was there, 6-ish months ago.

on that note, i have $10 in my pocket and it's been a week since my last cigarette. i think i'm falling off the wagon right now.

Hmm. I dunno, guys... time to retire the word "hipster"? I used to think I knew what it meant, but I don't anymore. It's usually just shorthand for "young people with a passing knowledge of current styles in music and/or clothes." What's wrong with that? What are the alternatives? Old boozers? Dorks? Take a note, hater: your "authenticity" is stale.

Unless you mean "childish scenesters who put on costumes instead of clothes when they go out and make a big point of acting aloof." Which really isn't Danny's.

The evil kitty is being especially schizo tonight. She's over excited, running around the apartment, walking into other rooms and howling at the top of her lungs. And then when I call her over, she does this "Ok I like you you can scratch my ears NO YOU CAN'T DON'T TOUCH ME!!!" I fed her but she won't eat, gave her water but she's too wound up to drink it. What else do you do? I don't have a tranquilizer gun.

She gets like this every year when it starts to get cooler out. I have no idea why.

Oh wait... I think I figured out what this is about. I gave her wet food for the past two days, and today when I went back to dry, it wasn't good enough. She's angry and she's punishing me.

kevin, i'm with you there on the being let down by people. however, i suspect my tolerance for ignoring former fratholes has gone up since living in this neighborhood.

so if dannys isn't the place for dancing, where is? i think getting pretty darn drunk and going dancing might improve my mood.

Colette, I haven't found a place I totally love to go dancing in Chicago, but my favorite so far is Sonotheque. I am trying to remember the deal with covers there...it can be expensive, but I've also definitely not had to pay a cover at all a couple of times.

oh also, those of you who were thinking of seeing 2 Days in Paris, I saw it tonight! I loved it!

So. I remember you guys talking a month or two ago about the block on Division just east of Damen, and last night I saw that monstrosity -- I'm pretty open to gentridfication as a rule, when it's done well -- but I saw that monstrosity called The Boundary, and now I get what you guys were talking about back then. That's a step beyond the little fancy-bag stores.

And by coincidence, last night I saw that Chicago Ale House on Lawrence as well, which was not as much of a monstrosity to me, but looked more like the one giant brewpub that some small/mid-sized towns now have, like Walter Payton's Roundhouse in Joliet, next to the train station.

i'll admit: i haven't been further west than kedzie since i've been back (discounting a trip to the southwest side for volunteer stuff) :-/
