umm well, you could say we've improved a dire squad but then it's still ferdinand & gabbidon (& traore) at the back who already went down once with west ham. traore, swp, & puncheon add sorely needed pace. barton adds something or other. there's a lot of question marks there, a lot of players i wouldnt want to be relying on, and i don't know really. we'll still be around the relegation zone but hopefully now not so far adrift that further planned reinforcements come january won't solve the worries.

wouldnt say i was disappointed though since flavio and bernie left us with too much to do too late and the bassong thing couldnt be helped. thought we'd get crouch (shocked with that tbh), think we should have gone for dann/onuoha/ridgewell.

So is a medical not a real requirement for deadline day transfers then? Cos I thought Meireles was crocked at the moment.

With Barton I could see him getting frustrated with the inadequacy surrounding him especially now that he's in his 'prime' and going into a tailspin. Equally he could enjoy being the lynchpin of the whole team and rise to the occasion as a galvinating force. Of course it's as likely that neither of those narratives will happen and he'll just be a pretty good player playing pretty well for a not v good team.

You know how Man City have been accused of signing up loads of players just to stop other people signing them? Well, if you *could* postpone the medicals until after transfer deadline day, and then cancel the transfer on the basis of a failed medical, you might just about be able to manufacture a situation where you 'signed' every top target of your rivals with money that you didn't have, only for them all to mysteriously 'fail' the medical once the deadline was safely out of the way, you pay nothing and none of your rivals gets the players they wanted.

I doubt you could get away with this for very long, though.
