luvd him bringing the real to those recover fools

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

TBF, I think shooting an innocent guy in the face with no warning requires a slightly different sort of recovery. He should crash a Hitmen Anonymous meeting and see how his rage shit flies.

rafael van der vaart is a fat jesse pinkman, a fat jesse pinkman.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 04:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think what i want from jesse is for him to get his shit together enough to play it cool without being a jackass, and this being a well-written drama that is the one thing i'm never going to get

This is because Jesse is stupid and thank fuck for that because it's given us so much drama and excitement.

When Jesse said "pop the trunk" the other week I did briefly wonder if that was a deliberate Yelawolf reference on someone's part, and then dismissed it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 09:00 (fourteen years ago)

well they're equally annoying characters

I love that they run the episode twice because seeing the opening scene again is always, always great & especially this time

Great ep (not surprisingly, very little Walt & family action -- the goofy music vacuum bag closet scene felt like a bit of a bone thrown to her contract or sthg) but I wish we would see more of the Chilean chemistry student.

Not surprisingly, I am fixated on the dialect differences in Gus's/Hector's/Chilean student's Spanish. Gustavo does *not* speak with the facility of a native speaker. I thought for sure this could become a plot point -- maybe it will?!

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

I only say native because he is supposed to be Chilean. If the actor Giancarlo Esposito was bilingual as a child, he would still speak a different sort of Spanish than he does on this show.

wiki

Esposito was born in Copenhagen, Denmark to an Italian father and African-American mother. His mother was an opera and nightclub singer from Alabama, who once appeared on the same bill as Josephine Baker. His father was from Naples, and worked as a stagehand and carpenter.[1][2] Esposito lived in Europe, New York, and Cleveland until the family settled in Manhattan when he was six.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

esposito was fucking RAD in this ep; glad we got to see him stretch his legs a bit

thank got forks showed up (forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 September 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

I fear the deal with the characters' accents is they all speak Spanish poorly

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 5 September 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

Marie not wearing purple.
Is it going to come out that Gus was a general in the Chilean military junta?

kate78, Monday, 5 September 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

The student spoke beautiful Spanish and was clearly a native speaker, but I'm not sure he sounded particularly Chilean. I don't know what street children in Santiago sound like though, really. He sounded Caribbean/costeño to me. Possibly Colombian?

Totally confused though because AMC ep guide says that the chem student's name was Max Arciniega, which is the actual name of the actor who played Krazy-8. Ep guide says character "Max Arciniega" is actually named James Martinez. Either way, his Spanish was very easy to listen to and understand, totally natural. Unlike Gustavo's.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

so was that Gus' lover or what

Gukbe, Monday, 5 September 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

didn't enjoy this as much as the week before. interesting ep - but a little too much jumping around.
why are we just seeing scenes with Gus and wheelchair guy now?

i did wonder about his preference earlier, but hadn't thought about that last night!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 September 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's already been suggested here, but i'm buying into the idea that hank's old partner is in gus' pocket and that he was the one that made the call that saved his life.

thank got forks showed up (forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 September 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

He was the first one to shoot down Hank's theory, then the other guy on the end. I'm starting to think that Hank really doesn't know yet that Walt is involved. Also, can we talk about Pinkman's cellphone. Loyalty appears to be officially shifted, and I wonder what Jesse plans to do with the lucky cigarette.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

Totally confused though because AMC ep guide says that the chem student's name was Max Arciniega, which is the actual name of the actor who played Krazy-8. Ep guide says character "Max Arciniega" is actually named James Martinez.

The scholarship that Gus started 15 years ago was called the "Maximinio Arciniega fund", named after "a good friend", so I'm guessing that was him.

Dust, Monday, 5 September 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

aha
but it's still the irl name of the actor who played krazy 8!
http://abreakingbadblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/breaking-bad-s01-e03.jpg

apparently he is also known as Chicago hip hop act MaxSoul

Born Max Arciniega in the great city of Chicago, MaxSoul is easily compared to Chicago’s most creative hip-hop acts-such as Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Common-thanks to his thought-provoking lyrics, concept-driven songs, and eye-catching stage shows. A spoken-word artist, MaxSoul opened for Russell Simmons’ Def Poets at the Metro in Chicago after earning first place in a local poetry slam. He carries the depth of language into all of his songs, creating a fresh, new, and accessible hip-hop sound.

A veteran of the stage, MaxSoul is also an accomplished actor, best known for his recurring role on AMC’s Emmy-nominated Breaking Bad. He has also been featured on some of the biggest prime-time shows on network television

yes i didnt know what 2 make of this at all. jesses taken the initiative 2 meet w/ gus prior 2 walt suggesting it? to poison him?

johnny crunch, Monday, 5 September 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

I read it as Jesse holding back from telling Walt that he's way closer to Gus than he wants Walt to know about. And now Walt knows that Jesse's not telling him stuff. Jesse acquiesced to the poisoning pretty easily iirc, and every time Walt brings it up, Jesse's like "dude whatever I have to take a piss" and I now read this dismissive behavior as a way of Jesse communicating "pls stfu, you have no idea where I stand in the larger picture" and Walt is only *just* realizing that Jesse isn't totally in his corner.

???

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

That is to say that Gus has sufficiently plumped Jesse's ego (see his clean tweaker-free house, overall confidence, employment of Saul as Ed McMahon) to the point where Jesse feels like he can fuck with Walt a little, and that maybe he is carving out a comfy lifer spot for himself in the Pollos Hermanos empire alongside Mike? I dunno.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that's what I thought. He lied about not having seen Gus since the diner when actually he spent most of last episode with him when he had the "negotiation" meeting with the Mexicans. The text told Walt that Jessie is seeing Gus on a regular basis and just fobbing Walt off when he says he hasn't had the opportunity to poison him yet.

xpost

Dust, Monday, 5 September 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure there's a plan there as such, he probably just quite likes working for Gus and doesn't enjoy being Walt's personal hitman everytime somebody gets in the way.

Dust, Monday, 5 September 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

ya - i figured Walt was just annoying him.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe. I guess I am expecting more from Jesse than just "you're annoying me" -- I really want him to be communicating that there is an undercurrent of "don't bully me/you're no better than I am/I don't need you/you're a strategic imbecile" in his interactions with Walt.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

think jesse's annoyed and doesn't know what he's doing doesn't want to admit he's seen gus since the diner since he has not yet killed gus

conrad, Monday, 5 September 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

Vince Gilligan said in the BB Insider podcast that the character Max was indeed named after the actor who played Crazy 8. He just liked the dude and wanted to pay tribute to him.

Pedantry alert, but what kind of phone just has the text of a message right there when you open it, without you having to press some buttons and then the message showing up as already read? Great episode though.

Number None, Monday, 5 September 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

I want to reiterate my questions over the timeline because of Walt saying it had only been a year because he was diagnosed but the cars/video games have moved on. Stupid and pedantic and wholly unimportant, I know, but just...ya know.

Gukbe, Monday, 5 September 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

I thought that was important! It's the only way I knew that one year had passed.

i drive a wood paneled station dragon (La Lechera), Monday, 5 September 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

Thought this was the best directed episode of the season too. Stuff like the shot of Gus in the elevator was amazing, and there weren't any of the gimmicky shots that have been all over the other episodes

iPhones show the text messages without any further finger-swipes - the message just pops right up! however, Jesse does not have an iPhone

I kind of figured G. Esposito learned Spanish as an adult or at least was not a native speaker/early adopter because I can understand him fairly well and I can understand slow, careful, over-enunciating American speakers of Spanish better that native speakers.

Though tbf Gus Fring is a slow, careful, over-enunciator of English, too.
