He has a mental attitude which makes me proud to have a friend who spells out "courage," 24 hours a day, every day of his life. Now, you flatter me by giving me this award. But I say to you here and now, Lou Reed is the man of courage who should receive this award. It's mine tonight and Lou Reed's tomorrow. I love Lou Reed. And I'd like all of you to love him too. It's very rare in life to know someone who affects things; changes them in a positive way. I've been lucky enough to have known some in my life: Andy Warhol, Doc Pomus. People whose vision and integrity was such that it moved the world a bit. People who, through the articulation of their talents and intelligence, were able to leave things better than they had found them. People who were not only not in it for the money, to paraphrase Lou Reed. Lou Reed was such a person and of the many regrets I have in life, not knowing him a lot better is one of them.

Whether writing symphonies, satirical broadsides or casting a caustic glow across the frontier of madness that makes up the American political landscape; whether testifying before Congress to put the PMRC in its rightful lowly place, or acting as a cultural conduit for President Vaclav Havel and the Czech government, Lou was a force for reason and honesty in the business deficient in those areas. As we reward some with money for the amusement they supply to the cultural masses, I think the induction of Lou Reed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame distinguishes the Hall as well as the inductee. (applause)

Musicians usually cannot speak. That's why they communicate through their instruments. But Lou was one who could. And because music is pure, the musician is pure as well and when Lou spoke he demonstrated the power of purity. Who will do that now? I admired Lou greatly and I know he admired me. It gives me great pleasure to give this award to his daughter, Edie Brickell.

I was watching a bit of that new Todd in the Shadows video about Lulu, and he notes (accurately, afaict) that "Transformer" and the first VU album have at best barely gone gold. How is that possible? It always blows my mind to hear that, say, "Never Mind the Bollocks" took 25 years to go platinum or whatever. You'd think given the amount of attention the Pistols (or Lou Reed/VU) got over the past several *decades* enough people would have bought the albums out of curiosity - or, hell, accidentally! - to drive those numbers up.

Rock 'n' Roll Animal and New York are Lou's only official solo gold albums.

There should be a separate certification for number of bands started per albums sold.

I think Lou was just as shocked as anyone. I thought it was adorable reading in (I think) the DeCurtis bio how with each 80s & 90s record Lou was always convinced that each one was a money-in-the-bank gold smash, if only the suits at Warners would promote it more, take out better magazine ads, get the "Hooky Wooky" vid played on MTV more, etc.

I've said for years that the fact that Lou Reed was able to hop from major label to major label for 40 years without ever selling any records is all the proof anyone needs that once upon a time, what music critics thought carried actual cultural weight.

I remember hearing Christgau doing a guest commentary on World Cafe back when Ecstasy(?) came out where he said something to the effect that Reed was one of the last prestige Rock artists a major label would be willing to continue to invest in because even if the records weren't doing big numbers on initial release, they'd still make money as steady-selling catalog items.

That said, I think his solo sales are handicapped a bit because a lot of those albums were frequently OOP (or--like Transformer--long only available in a substandard version) during the CD era.

Good thing I had some of them on eight track!

VU & Nico has Soundscanned more than 500k copies since 1991, and I’m sure if that includes Spotify streams, which are around half a billion for songs on that album. What does it take to be certified gold?

The record company has to submit the album to the RIAA.
