Pumpkin-heads care about breast cancer awareness? That's great!

north americans really like this "holiday" hey?

i carve a pumpkin most years and that's about the extent of it

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

actually actively hate fancy dress

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

yes i enjoy drawing pumpkins and witches and such with my niece, so i guess i'm not quite childless in this regard

also i find the notion of a parentally chaperoned mischief night amusing

mark s, Monday, 31 October 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)

Anyone who lets society restrict them to a single day when it's acceptable to dress up like a poop emoji is a damn coward.

I'm not a dummy. I'm not. (Old Lunch), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:45 (nine years ago)

i hate fun, btw

brimstead, Monday, 31 October 2016 19:02 (nine years ago)

Yeah, y'all might actually be into Halloween if you give it a shot. I'm sure it's real easy to dress up like A SQUARE.

many shots given, no more shots needed

carving pumpkins is classic, actually. pumpkin carving parties are fun.

brimstead, Monday, 31 October 2016 19:11 (nine years ago)

i carved the judas priest logo into a pumpkin once, it was awesome

brimstead, Monday, 31 October 2016 19:12 (nine years ago)

seven years pass...

I don't remember snow on Halloween being a thing until recently. But in the last several years I can recall multiple instances (including today) wherein Halloween marked the first snowfall of the year. That's for sure a big fat DUD afaic. JUST WAIT LIKE ONE FRICKIN' DAY, STUPID WINTER.

Material Wetness (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 13:41 (two years ago)

My first Halloween in Chicago, 1993, it snowed several inches.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:22 (two years ago)

Fucking Classic for having an excuse to watch umpteen horror movies.

I watched Rob Zom's Halloween for the first time last night, thought it was pretty good.

Ste, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

The last time it snowed here on Halloween, 2019, there was enough that the ground was covered by the time trick or treaters came around.

feeling old because i'm exhausted by this? everyone stop saying 'spooky season'. every store stop putting up halloween displays the day after labor day (i.e. the first monday in september, for non-yanks). liking shitty horror movies is not a personality. LEAVE AUTUMN ALONE

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:37 (one year ago)

Halloween rules and is the best consolation prize for summer ending

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:33 (one year ago)

Ah, sorry, forgot who I was talking to

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:33 (one year ago)

There was a pumpkin sitting on the bar, competing for space with the stacked empty glasses. The bartender moved it and said she would replace it. After her shift.

calstars, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:38 (one year ago)

halloween is a thing i just don't care about

he/him hoo-hah (map), Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:39 (one year ago)

I mean autumn is the best season but halloween is like a celebration of everything that rules about autumn including the sad parts
you've got to strike the right balance between Irish halloween traditions and some Samhain stuff and sophomoric yank lunacy

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:40 (one year ago)

i'm fine with giving halloween like, a week!

i resent having the entirety of october and much of september given over to it

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:48 (one year ago)

(and tbf i appreciate that 15 years ago all the little girls could basically only be leia and now they have a lot more options)

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:52 (one year ago)

this is the meteorological calendar I would ideally want:

summer - 10 mos/yr
halloween - 3 mos/yr
sledding - 2 weeks/yr

retail is crazy (plz stop putting out xmas stuff the day after halloween) - September is too early for halloween I agree!
b/c September is for pretending it's still august imo (sorry mookie)

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:54 (one year ago)

I'm half with mookie and I fuckin LOVE Halloween. but Halloween is not the Spirit store opening, or Halloween candy for eating when it's still ninety-plus outside. Halloween deserves the turn of the season, that's part of it. people in shorts & tanks are inherently unspooky except in a very non Halloween way. 10/1 should be the kickoff by law and I'd be cool with pushing that to 10/7. we don't need two months for halloween, it spoils the fun of it

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:58 (one year ago)

15 months?

calstars, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:58 (one year ago)

Halloween deserves the turn of the season, that's part of it.

that's the most important part

10/1 should be the kickoff by law and I'd be cool with pushing that to 10/7

yeah that's exactly right

we don't need two months for halloween, it spoils the fun of it

idk I think I need more time for halloween tho

math class - 0 mos/yr

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:03 (one year ago)

having spent almost a decade working in bookstores i at least appreciate that halloween, unlike christmas, doesn't involve six weeks of specialty music

i used to love christmas music and then i got broken

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:06 (one year ago)

nightmares about lena horne whispering 'sweet . . . jesus . . . christ'

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:07 (one year ago)

speak for yourself! I do the mash

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:11 (one year ago)

yeah I wanted to do a horror soundtracks ballot poll for October tbh but I'm gonna be way too busy with the coven etc

you liken the transition between seasons to the lifting of a veil - that time is halloween
& that is the thing in the world I most want to celebrate
it's transitory - it has to be - but I wish I could stay there a while longer

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:19 (one year ago)

oh i have a killer halloween playlist -- you're even on it for 'damn these vampires' and 'werewolf gimmick'

but it doesn't involve me having to listen to any vaguely christmassy shit at work for weeks on end. this is a union issue!

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:25 (one year ago)

i mean there is *so much* bad xmas music

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:26 (one year ago)

this halloween mix just does it for me every year

Substitute horror movies with serial killer documentaries and yeah that’s a lot of people’s thing

calstars, Saturday, 28 September 2024 15:32 (one year ago)

one year passes...

I am finally liking Halloween as an adult (I loved it as a kid). I bought a huge amount of candy and sat out on my stoop to observe it all. I had 40 or more trick-or-treaters come to my door, since there is now a block party a couple of blocks away from me. They were almost all about 5 years old or under, some just toddlers, in amazing costumes - princesses, policemen, panda bears, astronauts, k-pop demon hunters etc., and they seemed dazed. It was great. I gave candy to the parents and tourists also.

The themes were fairy lights, tote bags, peanut allergies, and kids who were too young to say trick or treat
