I went shopping this morning, woman leaving right in front of me had a cart with 3 mega-jugs of water.

how can water be dangerous if you need it to live?! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!

Two things I didn't think about that I will actually do! to prepare.

1. Get a lot of cash from the bank before I go home today. (Well, "a lot" like, relative to what I usually carry, which is less than twenty bucks.

2. Freeze giant blocks of tap water in my freezer in my biggest tupperware/mixing bowls, to be put in the fridge to keep temp down if power goes out.

Guys, it's perfectly safe to drink urine.

this is a long thread but has anybody explained how quickly hurricanes lose strength when they make landfall? if you're in NYC, you have absolutely nothing to worry about except maybe some bands of heavy rain. anybody north of Virginia can relax. i've been through several hurricanes. this one is relatively weak and landfall predicted so far away from NYC that all the fuss NYC folks are making really is some 'sky is falling' bullshit. chill out. you're going to be pissed when nothing happens but you can't go anywhere because your mayor is a dipshit.

I'm already kind of pissed about that, it may lead to the Saturday night fight being canceled, and I was looking forward to it.

'heavy rainfall' is enough to disable a subway system built 100 years ago, also bloomberg doesn't run it

so many factors: strength upon landfall, how far inland it goes, whether it can still draw energy from open water. Living in Florida, I've gotten to the point where I take hurricanes case by case. They can be weaker than expected, in which case you lose a couple days of work but not your electricity, and you just drink for two days; or they can be far worse like Wilma in 2005. But for god's sake should you all survive this one and get nothing but a bad summer afternoon squall don't assume all hurricanes are like this.

12 inches of rainfall sounds like a legit obtacle underground... but then we had 8 in one day about 2 weeks ago!

but no this is a large hurricane which means it'll weaken slower - all forecasts still have it at category 1 strength when it hits NYC

Intensity forecasting hasn't been nailed yet! It MAY deteriorate to a Cat One by the time it hits the Northeast. Let's assume it does: we've endured some horrible Cat Ones, some of which didn't begin with as much energy as Irene has.

Isn't its slow movement a factor, too?
