Hmm Oxford half marathon...maybe I should run that. At the moment I'm desperately trying to go from 0% fit to 90% fit in time to run the Dublin Marathon at the end of October.

The shrooms thing reminds me of a friend who used to like running while stoned. Can't imagine it! I keep such anal tabs on my own real state.
Did 9 miles today in about i hr 10. was nice, but was very reliant on music for motivation. wu tang.
― paulhw, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i should've mixed them in my shake. missed opportunity.
ran a slow 10 today. went ok, but it was just too damn hot.
― jeff, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)
i ran today after a week off for vacation. for the first half mile, i had a pretty decent amount of pain on the insides of both knees. then it went away. anyone have any ideas of what that was?
that is probably a really, really stupid question, but when i mentioned it after our run my gf said that something similar happened to her once and never popped up again. so hoping others know what i'm talking about.
― Z S, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)
My knee pains are random and often pop up after inactivity and don't last so hopefully same for you. My foot pain, sadly, is chronic but I can deal.
Did 4 slow miles this morn on an off day and felt v sluggish. Maybe my bones were feeling the earthquake coming?? Half-marathon in 3 weeks.
― tobo73, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah I'm back in the game too. Ran 6 miles on Saturday and had no pain. Ran a v cautious and slow 4 miles on Monday. Easing back intoit. Hopefully that's me done with injury.

11 miles last night. Went over 600 miles on my Newtons. They've held up well. At that mileage, they've only cost me 29 cents a mile.
― Jeff, Saturday, 27 August 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)
12 slow, flat, muggy miles in super-humid DC this morning. My feet hurt but last night I was talking to dude across the alley and learned he makes custom orthotics out of his basement. I get to make my own!
― tobo73, Saturday, 27 August 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)
If you can put 600 miles on a pair of Newtons then I'm springing for a pair.
― Captain Lorazepam (rip van wanko), Saturday, 27 August 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
Basically at this point I've built a base of 30 mile weeks. Which is right where I want to be when I start my fake marathon training at the end of September. I want to execute a full plan, but maybe not run an actual race. Or just run 26.2 all on my own.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)
how you all getting on? i'm feeling v good again running-wise, been mad cautious, just doing 4 miles every second or third day but no pain at all really so far.
do any of you do other sports on your day in between runs? if so, what? also...anyone do weights much, i looked for a thread but there isn't one. is that worthwhile? i feel like i'd like to add a another fitness hobby into my life.
― When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Monday, 26 September 2011 22:06 (fourteen years ago)
I'm going good. I had to take a week and a half off to rest my calf, so I'm building back up to my base mileage. Still no races on the horizon.
I don't play any other sports regularly. I wish I had a tennis partner and courts that weren't hard to procure, I'd play weekly.
I don't like to lift anything heavy.

i have trapped/pinched sciatic nerve is my back and hip and so i can't run at that moment (i can barely walk some days). it's driving me crazy, i can feel myself getting more unfit by the day and (more crucially) i don't have running as a stress relief/mood enhancer, which it has been invaluable as this past year, so things are really getting on top of me. damn vicious cycle.
― I have an infamous queef post? (jed_), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 13:03 (fourteen years ago)
I thank my lucky stars for no such major injury - would really bum me out. Just doing 4 or 5 miles or so every other day. Not particularly training for anything, just having fun out there.
― tobo73, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 13:12 (fourteen years ago)
Hey LocalGarda if you have access to a pool you got to try swimming. It's a great complement to running and is v low impact. Plus you can get a little buff! I very much miss living down the block from a year-round pool. Only problem was I would get super sleepy after a pool workout, to the point where I would abs have to take a nap.
― tobo73, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 13:32 (fourteen years ago)
LG, if you can find a class then Pilates is also a great complimentary excercise to running. If i had kept mine up i don't think i'd be having these back problems now. It has quite amazing results to posture and core strength even after 2 or 3 classes.
― I have an infamous queef post? (jed_), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)
Been getting in around 20 miles . Doing light lifting on days off, a lot of ab/core work too which I feel really helps with the running.
― Aerosol, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)
20 miles a week that is
ab/core work is also what pilates is great for. it's also perfect if you work at a computer screen all day and feel the effects of that in your back and shoulders. so running + working on a computer all day LG, pilates is what you need!

Wow this thread is useful. So I am more or less a beginning runner. I have been a longtime gym user, mostly weights/cycling/elliptical, now I have found a great place to run and am into it, but I seem to be only able to run a few minutes at a time, then walk a few minutes, then run again. What gives? I can't figure out of it is my legs or my lungs or what. Also I am asthmatic and have had hip surgery. How can I best start building up and monitoring my progress? Is there an iphone app that runs in the background of Spotify/iTunes whatever?
― uhhhhhh (admrl), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)
Also what to eat before and after run? No doubt this has been covered above, but I did a quick scan and didn't see. I tend to run either very early morning or late afternoon/early evening.
― uhhhhhh (admrl), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)
Also how fast to go? How not to go too fast? etc
I seem to be only able to run a few minutes at a time, then walk a few minutes, then run again. What gives?that's how you have to start, totally normal and good considering how many people injure themselves right from the start from trying too hard

seriously -- just try to keep doing it and make it a habit. the rest will come once your legs/lungs are accustomed.
i've been really sluggy lately, but have every intention of sleeping better and running back on my old schedule. the cooler weather helps.

hi adam. this is a long thread but La Lechera's advice at the beginning of the year stood me in good stead (until my recent back injury).
advice needed (sorry if all of this has already been covered)i'm going to start running this week. i ran for a bit a few years ago but i was getting terrible migranes at that point so i had to give it up and i didn't get back into it once they had cleared up. my goal is to get a little fitter progressively rather than barge right in and risk overdoing it. fwiw i think i have a pretty good build for running so i'm not too worried about that. i'm hoping it might also help with my depression and focus/clear my head, and also, possibly, with my sleeping pattern. i stay up so late atm just because i have expended so little energy during the day that i don't feel tired until the early hours.so... it's very cold here at the moment but currently not icey. i have running shoes but no other running gear. should i just wear longish shorts in spite of the cold? a lightweight nylon jacket? also do you /should you drink water when you run? i don't see many serious-looking runners with bottled water but i feel like maybe i need to. how should i start off tomorrow? with a run-walk-run alternating or just run until i feel like i've had enough? also i intend to start the days with a run rather than run later on, is this a good idea? should i breakfast before and let that settle for a while before running or wait until after the run to eat?thanks in advance!― jed_, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:25 (8 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalinka good place to start for inexperienced runners (i used this and now i have improved like 600% at least and am not injured, which is a big thing for me) http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381-386-9397-0,00.html-- i don't think you need water if you are only going out for like 30-40 min at a stretch in the winter-- wear whatever's comfortable but remember that you're going to get warmer if you're running. i wear 2 shirts + hoodie and tights/shorts-- take it easy, don't try to push yourself too hard at first, focus on making a habit (this can take a looooong time)-- running will help with mental health (has for me, at least, big time) and will also help with sleep, so good idea there-- everyone does what works for him/her, so figure out what works for you. this will take time, don't push it too fast. let it develop.-- that is my condensed advice for now, but i am extremely conservative, not into tracking data, and not competitive at all― ergonomically chromium plated fish slice (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 03:13 (8 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban PermalinkGood advice, especially making a habit of it.― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 04:44 (8 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalinkthanks for the advice and the link La Lechera. La Lechera seems very OTM, eh?
I am really into running before breakfast, I just need to make more of a habit of it. I am lucky to live somewhere with nice weather.
― uhhhhhh (admrl), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)
But yeah, I see how people get into it. It can be both a physical and almost spiritual experience, in the right circumstances. I certainly feel that way now I have stopped trying to run the streets around my house and pacing myself block by block and have got out into "nature". I see very few people on my run, but I do have to jog past a stables, it's pretty terrible when you are gulping lungfuls of air and it literally tastes like horseshit.
― uhhhhhh (admrl), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)
Agree with the above about running first thing. Have had to do several late afternoon runs lately and def feel a sluggishness. I just have a banana and some coffee before early runs. Good luck to you!

i can't stress enough that you should figure out what works for you and do that. it's entirely possible that my troubles sleeping have been compounded by my irregular running schedule. need to get back out there 3x a week and just do what i can do.

i have to say i got some nice wicking t-shirts and vests, a gilet, a rain jacket (essential here) some stylin' shorts all from the local running shop. it all really made me feel better about going out for a run even though i knew i was being kinda silly about the style thing. whatever works.
