not sure you can really single anyone out for not taking the carling cup srsly though. plus there's not the same obligation to cup competitions as there is a league - the obligation is to um, the spirit of football and yknow, winning stuff.

it's difficult cos going out at the same stage last season was a great help to our winning the league, but then when someone comes out and says "birmingham would swap 17th in the prem for that cup now" you just want to kill yourself.

Boris Johnson is to offer Tottenham Hotspur a huge cash injection in a move that could finally end the battle over the Olympic Stadium, the Standard can reveal.

The Mayor is proposing to use almost half of the £20 million given by the Treasury to rebuild riot-damaged Tottenham and Croydon to help the football club push through its plans for a new 56,250-seat stadium.

It would allow the football club to press ahead with its £400 million redevelopment of White Hart Lane rather than continue its court bid to gain control of the Olympic Stadium, which has been awarded to West Ham United.

Senior City Hall sources today told the Standard that a deal is on the table that will mean the Mayor's office will be responsible for more than £8 million worth of regeneration around the new stadium development, meaning that the planning application can finally go through.

It is also believed that Mr Johnson will consider buying some of the land around the stadium, which could then be used by the Greater London Authority to encourage businesses back into the area by offering "regeneration perks".

The people burned out of their homes, and the shopkeepers whose properties were smashed, have been strident in their calls for the reconstruction money to go to Daniel Levy and the ENIC investment fund, who are best placed to know what will truly help the local community.

This David Conn Tevez piece leaves me wondering: (i) whether Carlos sees any of the cash or Joorabchian keeps him happy with a sleeping-bag in a bedsit; and (ii) how this came about in the first place.

if I understood the piece, the answer to (ii) is that at Corinthians Joorabchian/MSI weren't just inserting themselves between club and player like they have with West Ham, Utd and City, they actually ran the club, so he signed away his ownership rights with his contract? Mascherano the same, he was just fortunate that Liverpool bought him out entirely.

I disagree but this'll happen now I think - the relationship seems to have broken down beyond repair. I still say Spurs needed a guy of Modric calibre more than three or four at the level below.

I don't think it'll happen - the more Modric pisses and whines in an attempt to force a move the less like Levy will be to cave into it. He'll dig his heels in. Kinda depends on what kind of mediating role Redknapp is playing I suppose.

Yossi Benayoun would immediately feel surplus to requirements at Spurs - he's a very good player but another lightweight winger with a poor injury record is not exactly what we need right now. Would take Sturridge but a season long loan that Chelsea would doubtless offer to some other club anyway feels like adding insult to injury.

Not sure there's an option to turning it down unless Modric and Levy can get together to work something out, which they apparently haven't been able to yet. Harry seemed fairly open about the fact that he doesn't feel able to play Modric in his current mood and sees Levy as key to fixing things. I'm sure that he's doing great work on the Adebayor / Diarra deals but it's crazy if he hasn't talked to our best player weeks after all this blew up. Levy can dig his heels in all he wants but if Luka's sitting in the stands, nobody's going to benefit.

Yeah that's true. Really the best option strikes me as "give us one more year then we'll let you go" but if Levy really did go back on a similar agreement last year then that's not going to wash.

Amid all the hysteria, it's worth pointing out that Modric was out injured for at least a half of the season when we finished fourth.
