Food in the UP sucks so I'm contemplating making one of the curry brats I brought to my dad from the Paulina Market.

Aside: Jordan, you need to go to the Paulina Market next time you're in town.

I think I heard that panini is so spelled because panino refers to each of the two slices of bread. I could be wrong, though.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

where's it at?

Jordan, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

I almost went to Paulina Market for the first time the other day, since Kr was making a rustic Italian stuffing for her family's Christmas Eve celebration and needed pancetta. But it was closed, so I went to Whole Foods instead (and was then re-directed to the new Whole Foods in Boystown, since the one on Ashland was out of pancetta).

jaymc, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

A panino (pronounced /pəˈniːnoʊ/) is a sandwich made from a small loaf of bread, typically a ciabatta. The loaf is often cut horizontally and filled with salami, ham, meat, cheese or other food, and sometimes served hot. A grilled panino is buttered on the outside and grilled in a press.

The word "panino" [pa'ni:no] is Italian (literally meaning small bread roll), with the plural panini. "Panini" is often used erroneously in a singular sense by speakers of languages that borrow the word, including English and French, and pluralised when necessary into "paninis" or, even worse, "panini's".

In Italian, panino refers variously to a bread roll and a sandwich, and a paninoteca is a sandwich bar. In Central Italy, there is a popular version of panino which is filled with porchetta, i.e. slices of roasted pork.

Jesse, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, so I was misinformed, then.

jaymc, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

God me too. I filed all that could be filed. Now I'm making labels.

Jesse, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I just added another chunk of wood to the stove. The curry brat was good, but milder spice-wise than I expected.

dan m, Thursday, 27 December 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

BORED AND HUNGRY.

Jesse, Thursday, 27 December 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

i just got muttered at by old people at the post office.

Jordan, Thursday, 27 December 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Were you holding up the line?

jaymc, Thursday, 27 December 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the table with all the labels, tape, forms, etc. is right by the counter. the sign that signals the start of the line is set a lot farther back (this post office is setup oddly compared to most of them).

So when i came in, I was the only one in the place, and I had to do a bunch of taping and labeling. When I'm done I just turn around and go to the open counter, and I hear the old people standing back by the sign being all "oh, it wasn't his turn...he skipped us...he's getting away with it too..."!

I have no idea why the counter was open given that there was now a line of old people.

I feel like such a slacker being here only 2 days this week and not doing much work while I am here (for there is none to do!)

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

And then following 2 days of slacking on the clock with a 4-day weekend.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I didn't have to work on Monday. :(

Jordan, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

Me too, and really mostly b/c I know I would just be sitting here watching Youtube and reloading ILX for 8 hours.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

So yesterday we learned that Dominick's has pretty decent pizza. Today's discovery is that Sbarro (at least in Jenny's building) serves a mighty fine breakfast. I got an egg white fritata sandwich on focaccia and possibly the most delicious sausage I have ever sunk my teeth into.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

weird

Jordan, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

i used to eat at sbarro all the time when i worked on taylor & damen. the options over there were pretty limited and i never had to worry about anyone wanting to tag along or bring them back something when i'd say "i'm going to sbarro for lunch".

chicago kevin, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

also, i used to get coffee in jenny's building every morning.

chicago kevin, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

i did not miss the internet at all while we were away.
if you're super bored at work you can look at our photos.

La Lechera, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeh "Sbarro for lunch" is not a phrase that makes many mouths water. But believe me when I tell you that the breakfast was *quite* nice. I want to know what that sausage's secret is. It was a link, but it was more the size of a brat. So fucking good. It begged for maple syrup here at the office, which I did not have, so I dipped it in honey and the thought of it just made me drool.

Hi Amanda, I am going to look at photos now.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

They're not that great because our camera is a piece of crap and kept running out of batteries, but whatever.

We had no intestinal issues at all, but D caught a terrible chest cold and I've had a sore throat for 7+ days. Yay.

La Lechera, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Dan likes to point at things.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

chicago kevin, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Fuuuuuuuuuuck. I wanted to go see that Star Wars exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, but it looks like the rest of the run is pretty much sold out.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

This Sports Night is pretty entertaining, isn't it? Someone lent me the series on DVD. At this pace I'll finally see The West Wing in 2011.

Eazy, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

I like it, but it might be hard to watch again b/c the Sorkin style has been done to death by now. Six Feet Under dude and Felicity Huffman are good.

(that said I've, like, never watched the West Wing)

Jordan, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm working at that same pace, E. (Speaking of which, I don't think I realized that your man Cr@1g Wr1ght had such a big title on SFU.)

Also, I think Horseshoe is a fan of Sports Night.

jaymc, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of, what happened to that girl? i emailed her a couple of times and she never wrote back.
