Wow, West Brom have a really shitty start to the season don't they? And they're making a decent fist of it. Starting to think Dmac might be right about Shane Long.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 August 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Frimpong was so good and so stupid. Made that great interception, then when the ball ran to Adam and their relative chances in the tackle were about 10/90 you just knew he'd run right through him.

I thought Vermaelen should've read the pass for 2-0 about a half-second earlier and gotten there in time to cut it out. Couldn't even take away one unalloyed positive.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

Nasri staying isn't even necessarily a good thing, unless he's the difference between midtable and a shot at fourth (not ruling that out, but top three is p much inconceivable). Wenger out/figure of fun talk is actually kind of heartbreaking, I just hope he's got a couple up his sleeve this week.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

I say inconceivable, but I'm not watching the Chelsea game.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

Staggeringly bad at the Bridge.

Luka why do you want to join this passionless shower?

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 August 2011 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

Terrible goal for WBA to give away. What point in doing so well only to give it up so lamely.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

Boswinga actually looking half decent this season.

not so good that you could be bothered learning his name tho

10/10 for snark.

I assumed Pete was subtly advocating he be used in an advanced outside right role, ahead of Ivanovic.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

maybe it's an affectionate misspelling now? cuz he is more of a winger after all

that would be in keeping with the famous chelsea sense of humour

nakhchivan, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

abramovich needs to buy a midfield, maybe he should ask loligarch of the moment kerimov how you get superstars to sign for your vanity project

nakhchivan, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

Whatever his name is, he done all right. Abject otherwise, but throw in Luiz, Mata and Modric, and give McEachran and Lukakakaka the odd game and we may finished 3rd.

i think lampard might need to go quietly into the night

nakhchivan, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

If it's pronounced Boswinga, I don't see why it shouldn't be spelt that way

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

lol i suppose it probably shouldn't be pronounced that way then

nakhchivan, Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

Lampard always starts the season slowly, but I do worry he's in terminal decline. But he's surprised me many times before and is smart enough to adapt. Played okay second half when we changed shape and pushed him further forward.

Don't think Torres will get double figures this year.

isn't house rubbish and Pete W mental (Pete W), Saturday, 20 August 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

I know. Even last season I think he was only one short of double figures for Liverpool. It's a catastrophic decline.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

His movement is good, his pace is fine, his touch is very good and his head isn't going down as easily as it was last season, but it's all happening outside the area.

Drogba's looking half the player he used to be, but at least he still seems dangerous.

isn't house rubbish and Pete W mental (Pete W), Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

Early days I know, but what about AVB so far? He doesn't seem to have much of a presence, which is great if the team is ticking but looks bad (in this country at least) when it's not.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

Don't you think that once they bring in Mata or Modric, or even give Benayoun more than 15' at a time, Torres will make forward/diagonal runs for through passes instead of dropping deep, and the goals will come?

RVP looks similarly neutered with a less creative midfield so far this season.

boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

should sign angle wrangle in case boswingers gets crocked

x-post

Not really sure, not been paying that much attention to be honest and don't think I've seen him interviewed, but he made positive changes today which is a big improvement on Carlo. Decent, early subs and changed formation to get the win.

People who have been at press conferences tell me he comes over very well. But he's not had to manage a club through a bad patch yet and that will be the test. I think we've taken him on at least one season too early, and am already wondering who'll be in charge in 2013.

can't remember where i heard/read this (probably here) but hasn't there been some rumours avb's been frustrated how slowly the lads are picking up his instructions

r|t|c, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

The lack of service argument is the big one for Torres, I really don't know. He got plenty of that in the World Cup for Spain and looked shite.

I would like to see Benayoun play more, but the big problem is Lampard. Such a great player, any manager has to respect his history when thinking about how to change the attacking focus of the team, and that isn't going to be easy at all.

Mata, if he signs and nsettles, will surely create more space, but it's more about how slowly they collectively move the ball - not sure how quick/easy that is to change.

'can't remember where i heard/read this (probably here) but hasn't there been some rumours avb's been frustrated how slowly the lads are picking up his instructions'

yeah, I think this is again to do with moving the ball more quickly. They're struggling with it.

― boxall, Saturday, 20 August 2011 20:25 (4 minutes ago)

this is probably correct

villas boas is in a very awkward situation right now though, since he is obliged to play torres even though drogba is probably better adapted to playing in front of a crappy midfield and making his own chances

they are completely stacked with #9s, anelka is the only one who has been successful on the wing yet he seems to be in decline too and the right wing looks exposed

i'm not sure what his starting defence will be if alex is sold but there are enough good players there to be reasonably secure

the midfield is really lumpen right now though, ramires looks like an overextended utility player, a lesser owen hargeaves, lampard is at an age when terminal decline is to be expected and mikel still seems to be playing within himself

god knows if essien will ever get back to his 07-09 form even if he does come back this season, benayoun is alright but not exactly at the level of nasri, nanri, silva, and mceachran still looks a bit raw

so yeah villas boas is probably being asked to do too much and they'd probably need a canny old fuck like hiddimk to wring a title challenge out of them

nakhchivan, Saturday, 20 August 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

that's all assuming they do get modric and mata.....modric is such a natural midfield gelling agent and should combine well with whoever, mata is great but i'm not sure how they will use him
