Are there any non-awful bars in midtown east? I just want something that isn't 100% divey/old-man but doesn't have that "Ooh, happy hour, let's get appletinis" vibe

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

does Kips Bay count? this place was Ok as of a few years ago.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

I went there recently. It's Irishy. Also there's liable to be music a lot of nights, since that place is "the home of Irish music in NYC." Which is a draw for me, but not for all.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

like what streets in Midtown East? I'm at 44th around Grand Central and most everything around here blows. generic Irish bars with $8 pints. best one is probably O'Neill's at 45th and 3rd, decent happy hour. Perfect Pint around the corner on 45th is ok, multi-level with an open air roof bar, always mobbed though. those are my usual picks if I go out after work around here but like I said the prices are ridic. I'm hoping someone has a good answer for you actually.

there's also a relatively new german beer garden upstairs on 3rd Ave but I haven't tried it yet. Hofbrau Bierhaus.

dmr, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

Hurting, 3rd Ave is chock-a-block with Irish bars?? Molly's is a good one.

xp dmr otm

yeah I don't mind Irish bars, it's the Midtown prices that blow

dmr, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I guess Irish bars are ok. I'm near that Hofbrau Bierhaus, want to try.

ari works around grand central and theres nothing that weve ever been able to find

max, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

I'm in the low 50s on third. Every work happy hour I've ever gone to in this area has been in a miserable place.

just embrace your inner bro

iatee, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just saying, Molly's makes what is arguably the best cheeseburger in NY and it comes with a side of mashed potatoes.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

molly's is also like 25 blocks from hurting's office tho.
but yeah it's great. they have good wings too.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

iatee, Monday, 23 April 2012 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

i like that Hot Bird now has a bbq restaurant attached to it. that is v convenient, even if their fries are kinda wack.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 April 2012 17:04 (fourteen years ago)

do they make hot chicken?

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

but the pulled pork & brisket & sausages are all good.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 April 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

they have BBQ chicken, i dont know if it qualifies as "hot"? its certainly warm

max, Monday, 23 April 2012 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah its decent BBQ and not too pricey and theyll take it over to you at hot bird if u tell em where youre seating

tbh now that they have food i dont know why id go to any other bar this summer

max, Monday, 23 April 2012 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

i see hanging out in our future.

bene_gesserit, Monday, 23 April 2012 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

Hot Chicken is Nashville-style spicy fried chicken.

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

iirc peaches in bed stuy has hot chicken?

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

which i guess isn't what the sign that gives hot bird its name is talking about since it says no frying. i just want a place called hot bird to have it.

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

commodore in williamsburg does it, too.
xp

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

huh, well the bbq place next to hot bird is owned by the peaches folks

max, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

so it's basically smoke joint? still a little mad at those guys for closing little piggy which was the best place to eat in the neighborhood for a while, but smoke joint is always packed so i guess they know what they're doing.

mizzell, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

i think its better than smoke joint but i havent eaten at smoke joint in a while. definitely cheaper.

Shout out to the recent closing of Hi-Fi/Brownies.

Yerac, Friday, 5 January 2018 14:22 (eight years ago)

The old joke rings true about these places that are closing becoming either a Duane reade, a nail salon, or a bank
