what an improbable victory for the paul brittain preservation society

A B C, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

I actually wasn't sure at first if the comment extended to "featured players," but it seems like that's how people are treating it.

jaymc, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Brittain is the nephew of actor Bob Newhart, who hosted Saturday Night Live in its fifth (1979–1980) and 20th (1994–1995) seasons, making Brittain the second SNL cast member to be the nephew of a celebrity who hosted SNL more than once (after Jason Sudeikis, whose uncle is semi-frequent 1990s host George Wendt).

I just found out about the Sudeikis/Wendt thing last week on WTF, and now I read the Newhart thing. Weirdness.

Also, seems like a greater funny disparity between Brittain and Newhart than with Sudeikis and Wendt.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 3 September 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

well i love Wendt but Newhart obviously has bigger comedy shoes to fill

season premiere tonight! excited

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 25 September 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)

Kinda feels like an extension of last season with a long break in the middle. NO new cast at all to look out for peels away a little bit of the anticipation.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 September 2011 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure someone at Jezebel is already typing out a screed on the "Red Flag" commercial bit.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 September 2011 03:51 (fourteen years ago)

I think I only listened to The King of Limbs twice and barely remember any of it...which song did Radiohead just play? Because that was great.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 September 2011 04:15 (fourteen years ago)

First one was "Lotus Flower," right? Sounded better than the album version.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 25 September 2011 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

Second one was Staircase (not on the album).

Melissa W, Sunday, 25 September 2011 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

the tony bennett thing was a-mazing

mizzell, Sunday, 25 September 2011 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah! This was a pretty good episode. Red Flag!

although i welcome new blood, it's not like new cast members ever really do much in their first episodes, they usually take a while to get some shine. so imo season premieres of SNL are usually more about "aww i miss (whoever left/got fired over the summer)" than anything else, which there was none of this year.

some dude, Sunday, 25 September 2011 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

They could've at least bumped Vanessa Bayer and Taran Killam up to regular status, but I guess that won't happen until Wiig and Sudeikis leave.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 September 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

kinda laughed @ the last 'dying wish' foxhole sketch but this ep was p dire

johnny crunch, Sunday, 25 September 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

"The cast remained the same as in Season 36, although Nasim Pedrad was promoted from featured player to repertory player.[3]"

Well, that was long overdue (even though I didn't realize it when the opening was happening).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 25 September 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it was a pretty funny episode! xpost

Gukbe, Sunday, 25 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

man, alec as tony bennett slayed me

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

this episode is hilarious front to back

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

the only dud was the buffalo/costa rica sketch

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

loved the susan lucci one

who's on top was like the first funny game show they've done in 3 years

top gun screen tests had me rolling

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 27 September 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

i liked the buffalo/costa rica sketch, but i get a real kick out of really bad puppetry

who's on top was ok, my favorite recent game show sketch was what's my name
i laughed a lot watching this episode but looking over the sketches now, i think i must have been pretty drunk.

mizzell, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

"The Comments Section" is a great premise for a sketch. Hope it comes back.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

It was great.

DaTruf (Nicole), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

First guy..meme guy..there are lots of fun options for that sketch!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:16 (fourteen years ago)

Not having seen Bridesmaids (yet), this is my first real exposure to Melissa McCarthy as a no fear-style comedian. Great imo!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

that was a good skit

but everything involving her p much boils down to "LOL fat people"

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

taran killam getting tons of burn this year

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

Taran is really fitting in well. They still have no idea what to do with Paul and Jay though.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 2 October 2011 05:00 (fourteen years ago)

he could do a great trolololol

otm this ep was unbelievably bad imo

johnny crunch, Monday, 3 October 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it was pretty good. Not as good as last week and I thought she was a bit too over the top with the fat physical humor stuff, but I thought there was enough good stuff. The HPV doll was great.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

the HPV doll was funny

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

i mean it was sort of dumb and it was pretty much dated by the time it aired, but there's something inherently funny about a doll purposefully stabbing an unsuspecting child w/ a needle

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 00:43 (fourteen years ago)

Things like the digital shorts and commercials, are they whipped together in the week before each episode, like the skits? Or do they do these well in advance and just sit on them? I always thought it odd that SNL stuck to this weird "let's put on a show!" mentality, with only a week-long build up, and yet the only surefire bits year in and year out are the pre-recorded ones.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

but everything involving her p much boils down to "LOL fat people"

Yeah this was really otm and made the episode pretty disappointing. I think she actually has a lot more to offer as a physical comedienne (that office skit was fucking hilarious), but I was pretty bummed out by that ranch dressing skit.

HPV doll was classic.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

ranch dressing skit was only good bcz of how she played the character. This is the first time I've seen her ever and now I want to see everything she's ever done.

(╯° □≗)╯︵ ┻━ןɐıɔǝds━ʇɥbıן━pǝɹ━┻ (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

it was v Jennifer Saunders/Eddy Monsoon imo

(╯° □≗)╯︵ ┻━ןɐıɔǝds━ʇɥbıן━pǝɹ━┻ (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

the ranch dressing skit was really funny and it would've worked totally outside the context of her weight, but they really ruined it by having her guzzle a whole bottle of dressing
