I've said it many times on this thread, but Redbreast is nectar of the gods.

rockapads, Thursday, 11 August 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

Bateman probably picked it up from Gacy in that case.

I've got my Knob Creek Single Barrel! I can't wait to try it this evening...

report?

plain ol' Beam for me atm

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

I found the alcohol kick (it is 60% abv, 120 proof) quite hard to get past on my first try, as that extra strength is something I'm not used to. I've been feeling too tired recently to really try it properly yet, but will report back when I do so...

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

i'm most of the way through my bottle. i've been mixing it in a 3:1 ratio with good spring water (that gets it down to 90 proof) and it's still kind of a fatiguing whiskey even tho i like it.

nakhchivan, Monday, 22 August 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

Dunno if i'm getting soft in my old age but i took some laphroaig last night and it tasted like peaty footcheese

10/11 of a dead jesus (darraghmac), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure yet - need to check my notes! - wish I'd spend more time actually trying stuff below £100 now at the tasting (I was too busy imbibing the mega expensive stuff I could never afford).

This might be good though

Gary Numan, or Gary Fletcher (ken c), Monday, 22 August 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

anyone else tried Feckin Irish Whiskey? I bought it because of lol name/ inside joke gift for my lady/ $1 cheaper than Jameson but it's pretty damn good. On the sweeter and heavier side.

My friend who now lives in the US in Salem, Virginia is popping back to Glasgow next week and is happy to bring a bottle of something back with her! I think I'd like to get a Rye Whiskey this time if possible. Happy to spend up to $50 or so. She sent this photo of her local liquor store...

Any suggestions?

just call me brian (krakow), Friday, 9 September 2011 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

i have an affinity for the gentleman jack top right of that photo.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 9 September 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

good friend!

i have no idea in re: availability of this bottle, but since it's va, they might have the bowman virginia rye. a bottle of it shattered in my suitcase last week so i haven't tried it but i've heard good things. barring that, rendezvous rye is right in yr price range and i am a definite convert to that stuff.

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 September 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)

so desperately want to be a whiskey guy. I've tried lots of really really good whiskey (old, rare etc) due to family being buffs but most of the time I'm nodding and agreeing. Do I need to be in a certain frame of mind?

owenf, Friday, 9 September 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)

I have a bottle of the Gentleman Jack awaiting opening, from when it was cheap in Asda briefly.

Thanks as always call all destroyer. I was thinking of asking if the High West Rendezvous were available, as I've seen lots of mentions of that, but it would be best to have some more certain choices as back up.

Rittenhouse 100 Bottled In Bond seems to get solid reviews too and would certainly be cheap by UK standards.

just call me brian (krakow), Friday, 9 September 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, rittenhouse is a+ and is imo the archetype of classic rye.

one thing to consider is how you drink your whiskey. i tend to mostly mix with rye. rendezvous is a more satusfying sipper tho.

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 September 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

I don't mix, definitely a straight sipper.

just call me brian (krakow), Friday, 9 September 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

owenf, my honest advice is to buy something solidly midshelf (i don't know if you're interested in bourbon or scotch or irish) and drink it a glass or two at a time in a quiet place by yourself. whiskey is v. contemplative and you'll need to get away from big price tags and vocal family members so that you can decide what you think of it.

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 September 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

that sounds like great advice. Form my own opinion. I have a good whiskey anecdote. My little sister had just turned 18 and got into partying/drinking which was a big change from the mild mannered girl she used to be. My parents, who she lived with at the time headed off on some cross US roadtrip or whatever for a few months and left her in charge of the house. My stepdad, being a farmer, had a huge store of ancient and expensive scotch in his cellar (farmers give gifts of good scotch to each other for christmas/birthdays/unpaid debts). Many parties ensued over this summer of freedom from the oppresive glare of authority and each time the supermarket booze ran out she'd run down into the cellar and grab a bottle of one of the many whiskeys adorning the walls which my gracious stepfather would accept but never drink (not a whiskey guy). Suffice to say some 20 bottles got mixed with cheap 'cola' and returned with the merest of remnants left in until some scottish dude came over about 5 years later and asked for a scotch.

owenf, Friday, 9 September 2011 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

xp, Rittenhouse is very good. Sazerac might be worth a look too, if they have it. Sazerac / Buffalo Trace is one of the most reliable vfm US distilleries.

A little bit like Peter Crouch but with more mobility (ShariVari), Friday, 9 September 2011 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

george dickel on the middle shelf in that pic is a thread favorite iirc

dan m, Saturday, 10 September 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

I just got a bottle of Bulleit, liking it a lot on first try.

boxall, Saturday, 10 September 2011 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

drinking dickel since hurricane irene when i went to get a bottle of rittenhouse and they were sold otu.

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 10 September 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

how is it?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 10 September 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

good! it's much better than jack, as far as TN whiskies, but i'm not an expert in that arena. i mostly drink rye cuz bourbon is too sweet for me to sip all night.

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 10 September 2011 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

dickel is great! i wish diageo would actually bother to market it because it could convert some jack drinkers for sure.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 September 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

btw i like the idea of everyone stocking up on rittenhouse before the hurricane

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 September 2011 03:18 (fourteen years ago)

lol me too, it made me smile; did not take it too bad.

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 10 September 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

they were also out of bulleit, tbh

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 10 September 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

drinking Bulleit rye right now. i haven't had it in a while, since i posted about it earlier on this thread. it's hitting me nicely right now. a couple of ice cubes make the difference.

rockapads, Saturday, 10 September 2011 05:51 (fourteen years ago)

We stocked up on Rittenhouse 100 a few years ago when the stocks were running low and the prices were heading up; I think we paid $13/bottle at the time, and it seems to be more like $20 now. Still have 15 bottles left. Definitely a good investment.

I found this website.. http://www.abc.state.va.us/Pricelist/STRAIGHT_RYE_WHISKEY.html

just call me brian (krakow), Saturday, 10 September 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

I've suggested/asked for one of...

- Rittenhouse 100 Proof Bottled In Bond Rye Whiskey
- Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve Rye Aged 6 Years
- Sazerac Rye 6 Years Old

Based on likely ease of availability, price and decent reviews.

just call me brian (krakow), Saturday, 10 September 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

You're gonna love the Rittenhouse and Sazerac on their own, use the Wild Turkey Reserve for cocktails

fear itself (Ówen P.), Saturday, 10 September 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

Catoctin creek is awesome bc I have bottled it and the couple who makes it are a+ awesome! But it doesn't taste like most ryes at all - it's very round. I hate using words like that bc it's so douchey but I can't think of anything else!

I like redemption rye, but it's not on the list :(

tehresa, Saturday, 10 September 2011 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't want to put my friend to too much trouble by asking for non-big names that she'd feel obliged to hunt for... All of this stuff is exotic to me in Glasgow, so it's grand whatever!

just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

Hey Krakow, I am in Glasgow most new years and live in DC. Expect to be back there this year and live near a good bottle shop so plan ahead!

ljubljana, Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

Oooh! Thank you ljubljana, totally going to take you up on that implicit very kind offer!

just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

Also, my friend bought the Russell's Reserve Rye for me. She'll be here next week... Going to be my first ever rye whiskey!

just call me brian (krakow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:43 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not really sure I can tell a difference between all of these ryes. I guess I need to educate my taste buds more or something. I've tried the Sazerac, Rittenhouse, Overholt and Bulleit, and they all seem pretty comparable to me, except that the Overholt is something like $18 and the rest are all around $24.

the wheelie king (wk), Sunday, 11 September 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

any difference between dickel and dickel sour mash? one had the label like in the pic above, other one had a green-ish label?

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Monday, 19 September 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't talked about weller 12 year enough in here.

best sub-$40 bourbon currently made.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeah weller is really decent for how cheap it is!

tehresa, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

i'm a big fan of Connemara, which is what I'm currently drinking--a peated single malt from the west coast of Ireland. smoky and briny like 10-year Laphroaig but a bit lighter and smoother. I picked it up when I was in Ireland a few months ago. i haven't seen it for sale around the East Coast much but i believe you can get it in California

geeta, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

This is awesome and very affordable. Makes a fantastic sour.

given its provenance i had every reason to be suspicious of that bottling but i'm with you, it's very good.
