Would anyone be able to recommend a decent "news" app? NYT is alright.

McClatchy! Great and free.

I read the Guardian app the most tho

Dark Noises from the Eurozone (Tracer Hand), Friday, 12 August 2011 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

what the hell is happening with Calvetica - the developpers keep updating it beyond recognition and now explain that if I want sth that does what that app used to do (ie simple minimal calendar), I could buy their new "Tempus" app...!

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's terrible. Agenda is better

James that is awesome

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

How on earth did they get that on the app store? I saw what looked like a similar site, advertising the "conflict free" iPhone, but it was just designed to look like the apple site.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 13:20 (fourteen years ago)

double whoa @ phone story

remembrance of schwings past (gbx), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

can you imagine the uproar if that app had been blocked?

lukas, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

I bet it will be blocked shortly.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

nuh-uh

lukas, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah lukas is right. apple has much more to lose by blocking it.

the argument that "we can't control the third world, it is a net positive to support some sort of economic development there, even if local actors are twisting it toward negative ends" is how the first world sleeps at night and i'm sure that the vast majority apple consumers would be sympathetic to apple saying that too.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

and...it's been banned.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

haha damn - too late!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

wow. well, can't say i think it's a wise move.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

i think if tech sites gave a shit about global exploitation in the supply chain they would have written about it before now

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

ok so me and apple both made mistakes today

lukas, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

lol. I think this will blow up in Apple's face. It's true that most people don't give a shit about the ins and outs of 3rd world manufacturing, but this puts a fresh twist on that story. in fact I think more people probably care about the closed nature of the appstore ecosystem, which is also involved here.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

Have no explanation for them destroying Calvetica. Tempus really is the best of the lot, though -- even better than Agenda and has a good iPad version.

stet, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

Will check out Tempus.

I don't think this will blow up in Apple's face. People aren't going to be like "hey man, how dare they censor this game that calls out their faults". Everyone's gonna be like "of course they'd kill that" and go on with there day.

Is their "conflict-free iPhone" page still up? Apple could stop that easily too considering it's mimicry of their trademarks.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

one month passes...

So, box.net is giving 50GB cloud storage for 50 days for iOS users. Their usual free amount is 5GB. I signed up.

Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

http://box.net/

Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

What can I use this for?

Jeff, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

It's cloud storage. I think you know how you might use cloud storage. You only get 5GB free w/ iCloud.

Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really use much storage. I have Dropbox and that works so well with multiple computers/platforms and devices. and I only get 2 gigs with it.

Jeff, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

I don't like having to keep files on my work computer if I want to access them from there. I like the cloud.

Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

I meant to mention, the new push notifications in iOS 5 are fucking boss

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Friday, 14 October 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

dropbox keeps your files on the cloud as well as synchronized on whatever computers you have it installed on. I have a paid account with 50+ megs. I'm sharing folders with my record label partners and the mastering people we're working with, sending files back and forth. It's totally fantastic. I'm also using it to sync 1password and notational velocity, and have been fighting to figure out a way to get it to sync my Font Explorer library between two computers.

And the app is great.

dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

You don't have to download anything. Guy finishes mastering a record. Saves it to or moves it to the dropbox. It's upload to the internet over night while downloading to my computer at the same time. I wake up and it's there on my hard drive. But it's also in the cloud.

My girlfriend has two computers, a desktop and a netbook. She writes fiction so her only concern is tiny word documents. She doesn't even bother moving them around, her documents folder is essentially dropbox. Save a story and it's immediately on both her computers and backed up to the internet. Plus prior versions. And dropbox knows if you're on the same network so it transfers files over WIFI instead of online if the computers are in the same place.

dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

whoa didn't know this:

And dropbox knows if you're on the same network so it transfers files over WIFI instead of online if the computers are in the same place.

do you know any of the technical details? e.g. which protocol are they using?

caek, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

nope

dan selzer, Friday, 14 October 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

Is there a way to use Dropbox ONLY through the cloud? I don't want my personal files staying in my work computer.

Je55e, Friday, 14 October 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

Yes. Just don't install dropbox on your work computer. You can still log into the website.

dan selzer, Saturday, 15 October 2011 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

Or you can manually tell the client on each machine which folders you do and don't want it to synchronise to that computer.

JimD, Saturday, 15 October 2011 06:41 (fourteen years ago)

box.net meanwhile has 1) 100mb per file limit and 2) no desktop client software unless you pay for it.

JimD, Saturday, 15 October 2011 06:45 (fourteen years ago)

there's a reason Steve Jobs offered dropbox 800 mil...

dan selzer, Thursday, 20 October 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)

Yeh, the 100MB limit is kind of for shit when I'm trying to back up videos.

I will take another look at Dropbox.

Je55e, Thursday, 20 October 2011 04:46 (fourteen years ago)

Guys for real, how the fuck do I send email attachments? I know there's got to be a way with the right apps

Parker Posey as herself dancing to house music in NYC in 1995 (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

I would love to know. I use an app for Gmail, which is way better than the built-in Mail app, but it doesn't allow attachments either.

Je55e, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

Dropbox!

actually not sure what you want to do, but you can upload a photo or document from your iphone to dropbox, then share a link to it via email, all within dropbox.

have I mentioned DROPBOX!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

If you like making music on your iPad I strongly recommend the Animoog app.

99 cents now, 29.99 soon. so get it soon.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

It's fun x2.

Jeff, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

I remember now the downside of Dropbox: 2GB capacity on the free version. I should have taken advantage of one of their big promotions.

OTOH, free Box=100MB max file size. Oh well.

Je55e, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

I paid the 100/bucks for pro, and have gotten more space simply for suggesting so many people sign up.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

is agenda the best calendar app, and tweetbot best for twitter?

cozen, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

I mean Dropbox can send links but I need to be able to keep PDFs of my references and resume on my phone and be able to speedily reply to Craigslist job postings on the fly. How to I shot?

Parker Posey as herself dancing to house music in NYC in 1995 (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

So I got the iPhone 4S today, after having had the 3G for the last few years. What apps are worth getting that I didn't have access to before - any recs?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

dropbox app should be able to handle all that stevie

max, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

Like emailing as an actual attachment? It can't, unless I'm missing something. You can only email links to the file.
