Definitely. That's why him and Wayne must be in the same team. Trading grooming tips etc.

Levy's plan to welcome Adebayor to the club goes a bit too far.

JEEZ GUYS SORRY THE THREAD TITLE CONTAINS NO REFERENCE TO LIVERPOOL NOT WINNING ANYTHING

i'm sorry for whatever (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 7 August 2011 07:21 (fourteen years ago)

I like the thread title's fusion of English traditionalism with modern continental techniques.

Matt DC, Sunday, 7 August 2011 10:00 (fourteen years ago)

The other thing about the thread title - as well as google inaccessibility, it's passing-interest-proof. Other than the couple dozen of us, who is ever going to be intrigued to click on that?

Fair point - I've killed EPL in the thread title. Delivering the module there.

Matt DC, Sunday, 7 August 2011 10:03 (fourteen years ago)

unilateral imo

nh (cozen), Sunday, 7 August 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

Gah, I'm a big fan of 'EPL'! Will keep mouth shut. The unattractiveness comes from fusion of Dalglish & management speak imo, but yes, I agree with the benefit for passing trade.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 7 August 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, if I were a City fan I'd be concerned about what's coming from Mancini right now. He's already talking down their title chances and suggesting they might not have the right mentality. A++++ motivation there dude.

Matt DC, Sunday, 7 August 2011 11:52 (fourteen years ago)

Dunno, I get the impression that in private Mancini's probably all "you must kill these guys, ALL of them! We must win the league" What he says to the media is another thing altogether.

pandemic, Sunday, 7 August 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

Hart, Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Kolarov, De Jong, Silva, Yaya, Milner, Balotelli, Dzeko.

De Gea, Smalling, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Anderson, Young, Rooney, Welbeck.

Fergie won't be delivering the module either if De Gea carries on like this.

Matt DC, Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

I can see Fergie in two years repeating how he regrets not having bought Stekelenburg earlier, just as he keeps lamenting that he got Van der Sar too late.

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

Is De Gea wearing and old VdS shirt btw? Looks huge on him.

I for one am (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder why the red-nosed old Scottish drunk keeps bunging secret fees to GestiFute for players like Cronaldo, Nani, Anderson, Bebe and De Gea?

James Mitchell, Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

Richards should've been off for that.

Chris, Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. It's been fairly fractious for an ostensible friendly

Number None, Sunday, 7 August 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

That was a pretty amazing team goal just then, how many passes in and around the area?

Mancini's inspirational Barry-for-Balotelli substitution looking pretty stupid now.

Yeah that was a great atrtack

btw in the interests of pedantry, the top division in English football is called the English Premier League. the Premiership is some Rugby thing or something.

i'm sorry for whatever (Noodle Vague), Monday, 8 August 2011 05:57 (fourteen years ago)

Good point, can we get a title change on the 01/02, 02/03, 03/04, 04/05, 05/06, 07/08, 09/10 and 10/11 threads please?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 August 2011 06:34 (fourteen years ago)

It was the Barclays Premiership and has been the Barclays Premier League since '07/'08.

Looking forward to the official The FA Cup with Budweiser thread.

James Mitchell, Monday, 8 August 2011 07:22 (fourteen years ago)

You really want this now, after the NAMING RIGHTS fiasco last season?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 August 2011 07:58 (fourteen years ago)

btw I can announce that I signed for Arsenal at the weekend - just waiting for the red membership paperwork to be completed then it'll be down to some serious badge-kissing. Obviously it would be my dream to someday return to Liverpool, etc.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 8 August 2011 08:02 (fourteen years ago)

srsly don't believe lex has never heard the phrase 'john terry' before today given his sterling attempts to be the most extracurricular football player of all time with his forays into criminal justice, celebrity gossip etc

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

going into that would be about the only thing that could make football interesting for me!

xp i may have done but footballers' names mostly don't stick in the mind, they all blur into one all-cheating all-racist thug

i'm sure we've had some debate about it on the England manager threads but i don't know if there's a full-on thread dedicated to it

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

and possibly wider - english athletes in general? i have always found the assumption that english audiences are only interested in hearing about english sportspeople quite weird and frustrating

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

possibly relevant in OLYMPICS YEAR

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

also the thread on nationalism which was more US-centred i think. but i'm clearly in too funny a mood to argue about stuff today. don't know why tbh.

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Union Jacks almost automatically make me boo and i can't explain that fully either.

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

He is the ur-cheating all-racist thug though. The thing that makes him particularly hateful is that he dresses this up in quasi-heroic for England and St George blather and whenever he gets called out on anything his usual response is "I didn't do it" even when it's caught on camera that he did.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

oh god one of my friends delivered some a+++++ union jacks commentary on twitter the other day, if i knew how to screencap or anything i'd repost it somewhere

they're not as bad as st george's crosses obv but being surrounded by them in JUBILOLYMPICS YEAR is doing my blood pressure no good at all

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i enjoy most sports but the combination of the Monarchy, the Olympics and a kind of One Show all-in-this-together Britishness is making me half pukey half psycho at the mo

Vermicious Knid A (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 May 2012 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ him being england CAPTAIN, why would they pick someone so unanimously reviled?

he is especially representative imo

they all blur into one all-cheating all-racist thug

that thug is john terry, tbh

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

so would there be something in the theory that he is some sort of lightning rod focus for everything (fans) already hate about the sport? encapsulating all the negativity that you kind of have to ignore or do some suspension-of-disbelief shiz elsewhere?

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

that's pretty astute

Number None, Sunday, 20 May 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know that we ignore it, but yeah there might be something in that, especially in him wearing his ugliness/unthinkingness as a badge of pride.

There's also a monumental lack of self-awareness, combined with ruthless, a bit cheaty and morally-unmerited success, that is most distasteful. He reminds me a lot of Gordon Brown actually.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's true, and i kinda why i find the visceral hatred of him either hysteric/hyperbolic or just lame like the LOL JT IS A CUNT stuff which is an insult to the proud tradition of lol football via ken c and a hoy hoy

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

nobody who has seen the super grainy footage of lampard jr and ferdinand sr trying to coerce blowjobs out of girls in ayia napa circa 2000 could plausibly argue that terry is an altogether worse category to them

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

My performance was on the same tape as a recording of Kieron and Frank with a couple of birds, but it wasn’t all at the same time.

I didn’t even know about what they had done, it was not all one big orgy, as was reported.

Somehow, the camera got nicked. About two weeks later I got a call from a newspaper about a video of me shagging a bird. I could have fainted.

The video was wrong, yet to me it was harmless, just part of growing up.

The truth is some women will do anything to crack on with footballers and, let’s be fair, which young players would pass up the opportunity to take them up on some of their offers?

Some birds will buy you drinks all night, strip for you, get shagged with other people in the room and do all sorts of tricks. It was highly embarrassing.

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

a marina hyde column describes it as 'ordering them to perform a lesbian sex show', i guess the beejes required no persuasion

also id forgotten that lampard was involved in the famous post-september 11th abuse of american tourists at an airport

Serov devochka s persikami (nakhchivan), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

these last few tweets from nakhchivan are kind of why i was curious in the first place b/c i thought the kind of behaviour i was reading about from terry was...commonplace among footballers

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

tweets?!

#spendingtoomuchtimeontwitter

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Sunday, 20 May 2012 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

FWIW Lex, John Terry is no longer England captain. He's actually been stripped of the captaincy twice, first for having sex with a team-mate's wife, then for alleged (ie definite, just not yet proven in a court of law) racist abuse of a black player, Anton Ferdinand. Anton's brother, Rio, was the guy dropped from the England squad altogether for having the temerity to be a bit annoyed by this.

So yeah, that lightning rod thing is pretty astute actually, although I think JT has a kind of unrepentant malice you don't get with most of yr hateful Golden Generation types.
