not used it yet...are you joking or serious?

i take it ledge likes his social networks devoid of any thing other than people screaming "HELLLLOO??" into a big empty void?
― Why'd You Wanna Tweet Me So Bad? (dog latin), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)
xp bit of both... it has the long-form aspect of facebook and the more casual network-building of twitter, and 'circles' are way better than lists in fb or twitter.
but yeah it's not really worth it until more people are on it. and then, what, i'd have three social network things to try and keep up with? christ. just forget the whole thing.
― ledge, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)
Not seen google+ yet but its arrived at a point where I'm wanting to streamline/downsize any social network stuff rather than expand - I'm also uncomfortable that my real name is used with the google stuff.
― lake, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)
Realizing a work person was following me on twitter (despite my name never having been on it) was the final straw
― lake, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:09 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, i'm sure google+ is fantastic but i just don't need another thing. i wonder if people will eventually make the move from FB to Google like when everyone just decided to up sticks and leave MySpace?
― Why'd You Wanna Tweet Me So Bad? (dog latin), Friday, 5 August 2011 11:12 (fourteen years ago)
The idea appears to be that they will because can restrict content to certain people much more easily than fb?
― lake, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)
yeah if i could get it to work (it's not camino compatible) the appeal would be that - twitter's just about reached the point that fb did a while back, where it's not as much fun because "everyone" is on it
― lex pretend, Friday, 5 August 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)
they don't know each other and are kind of polar opposites tbh

Can't you just make your Twitter private and kick that person off?
Can't be arsed with Google +. If it wasn't for the events page I'd have canned Facebook ages ago.
― Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 13:06 (fourteen years ago)
twitter's just about reached the point that fb did a while back, where it's not as much fun because "everyone" is on it
But "everyone" being on it was why people went mad for Facebook in the first place - like it suddenly seemed to be full of people who weren't anywhere else on the internet. But the novelty of that wore off pretty quickly. I don't want to have conversations on Facebook because I don't really like the idea of someone I went to school with chipping in on a discussion of eg politics with some rabid and inane right-wing viewpoint i'd been previously unaware of.
Dunno, FB was better when it was all on one page and they hadn't overhauled the status updates to make it more like Twitter (and less navigable in the process).
― Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 13:10 (fourteen years ago)
Dude yr browser is clearly barely fit for purposes, you should just bin it.

Google+ circles makes it really easy to avoid that (as does using Facebook lists, probably, haven't tried)
― a million anons (onimo), Friday, 5 August 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)
I did a lot of picking and choosing over which people from school I would add to FB, and I stuck to the rule 'would appear in public with them still' when making my choices. My page is blissfully free of right-wing morons jumping into threads as a result.
― murdoch most foul (suzy), Friday, 5 August 2011 13:58 (fourteen years ago)
i don't have any choice! chrome doesn't work on my mac version and firefox is the worst piece of shit ever.

though new-twitter is a pain in the arse on my 10.4-running powerbook too - marginally better in firefox than safari, but still pretty rubbish.

Hello lex pretend, I would like to introduce you to Internet Explorer. We are not allowed to install other browsers on our work machines and all day I am so thankful for the very existence of Firefox. It isn't perfect, but goddamn there is so much worse out there.

haw i'm on IE on an office computer atm.
i can't remember why i don't like safari but i've never thought of it as a real option.

i'm still getting used to #newtwitter. when i have a random person's tweet on my timeline, i assume it's been retweeted by somebody i'm following - how do i tell who this is?
― tine nic (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)
somewhere on the tweet it tells you "retweeted by [user]" iirc
― (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
i think
it used to on old twitter, but i can't find it on #newtwitter

alright, say bob smith's retweeting jim smith -- this is what it looks like:
jimsmith Jim Smith [symbol] by bobsmith
the "by [username]" is who's doing the retweeting

it's right next to the retweeted person's name

Finally, I got round to creating a private list for my essential tweeters, i.e. the ones where I don't want to miss a single tweet. Having done that, I've opened the floodgates on my main stream, doubling the number of people I follow in one fell swoop. So the private list is now my main access point, and I can just dip my toe into the main stream whenever I feel like it. This is working out so much better.
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)
I've always thought that that kind of thing would be an excellent way of operating, but have not going round to creating such a list.
― just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)
it's very, very useful
and you can move people on and off the private list depending on how much you feel like seeing their stuff at any given point, and no one can see
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)
Yes, perhaps that's the best bit of all: nobody can see whether they're on the private list, so that puts an end to most follow/unfollow politics.
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)
Haha I was just thinking I'd use it to dishonestly unfollow people.
