Works on work computer. Still HATES it, tho.
Guess this means I have to upgrade Safari, which is just such a pain in the arse because my internet connection is so slow and the apple downloads always take ~forever~

Is a private account actually safe from the internet's prying eyes?
― just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:44 (twelve years ago) link
Only if you use https all the time.
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:45 (twelve years ago) link
I think the perhaps sad truth is that one shouldn't say anything on the internet (however apparently anonymously) that one wouldn't want the world to potentially know.
― just call me brian (krakow), Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link
I used to use Twitterfox/Echofon all the time but the new version is so awful it sent me back to using the Twitter homepage, which has always felt like a ridiculously clunky way to use Twitter.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:51 (twelve years ago) link
x-post depends what you are concerned about.
If it's "I don't want my wife/parents/boss to read this!!!" then quite frankly, twitter's security isn't what you need to be worried about, but leaving your browser open or computer unlocked is a much bigger worry.
If it's more "will twittercorp roll over and sell my DMs on to advertisers, data aggregators, or the police" then the answer is of *course* they will, and nothing you put on there is ever private.
― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:56 (twelve years ago) link
It's the former. I'm too minutely solipsistic to be concerned with the latter.

Private accounts are secure and Google-proof, but it would be a bad idea to authorise any third-party apps to access them. Also, any @replies to private accounts are fully visible, and you can't stop people RT-ing. That said, a friend of mine with quite a high public profile has maintained a VERY private account for the past 5 years, with a tiny and trustworthy list of followers, without encountering any privacy problems.

oh so twitter's finally forced the switch to new twitter and guess what it doesn't work for me any more, just doesn't load at all in camino

well can someone tell me how to make it work again then?
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link
download a dedicated twitter client like twitterific, twitter, or tweetdeck or use another browser like safari or chrome
― nh (cozen), Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link
i'd say the above too, but fwiw what version of camino you on?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link
camino version 2.0.7
i would use chrome, everyone tells me this and i liked it when i was able to briefly use it, but it's not compatible with mac 10.4. firefox is stupidly heavy and enrages me constantly
when i used firefox, i used the echofon plug-in for twitter, which i liked - i want something that works within the browser, not a separate application, tried tweetdeck and couldn't get with it at all. echofon is not compatible with mac 10.4 or camino
bloody fucking obstacles at every turn
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:01 (twelve years ago) link
if there's any echofon-like in-browser thing that works with camino do tell me!
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link
@umairhI could go on all day, but I'll shut up now. If you're wondering "how did we get here?", try reading the last few tweets.
ughhhhhh

weird i'm digging here and nobody seems to be reporting any issues
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:08 (twelve years ago) link
in camino i mean
the top bar loads - with home, profile, messages etc - but the rest is just a blank grey screen, whether i try to go to the twitter home page or to any individual twitter page
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:12 (twelve years ago) link
lex: be like this other awesome lex and use the Opera browser, I'm sure that's Mac compatible?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link
huh -- i just went and checked twitter, and i'm having the same issue as lex, on Windows 7/Opera. big gray screen with a header on top

this. i'm using chrome for windows 7. will opera make the pretty tweets come back?
― orinoco flowbee (get bent), Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link
xp with reddening, i guess that answers that!
if you're on a mac, use safari -- sorry to be real, but lol if you're using something else, unless it's chrome i guess
― markers, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link
i still recommend opera however, og mouse gestures 4 lyfe

also, i have no idea wtf was so wrong with old twitter that necessitated this change? i mean...it was fine. completely fine. no complaints at all. this? this is NOT FINE.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link
safari isn't as heavy as firefox but it's still too heavy
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link
safari rules
― markers, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link
also i'm sick of having to switch browsers constantly because nothing is compatible with anything else
I'm on lolXP with Opera and it loads fine; but also loads fine on Win 7 & Opera at home, so.. I haven't switched from Opera since 2001, rarely have problems.. when I do I just disable style sheets and pick out what I need.
xp to reddening mouse gesture high five! I think that's two double-clicks.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link
yeah where did the google realtime search go anyway? i'd just got used to having that option
― lex pretend, Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:32 (twelve years ago) link
i had to load IE yesterday because a low-budget college website's information system wouldn't support my browser. the experience was very late '90s. (xxxp with the post about browser incompatibility)
