xpost My gfs dad will give you a detailed description of SUBWAY and how even though it's not really any good he considers it the best food when you have nothing else to eat. And he'll tell you this again the next time he sees you.

hahaha these two need to get together and have a food critique-off!

Game's at one. You got my home number?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:24 (eighteen years ago) link

E-mail it to me just in case.

Miss Misery, I miss Austin in-stores. Was it Waterloo, or some new place?

Here in DC, you can barely get a decent breakfast taco, let alone an in-store. Instead, it's been pizza, booze, and Young Adam, since it's too cold to go out.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:27 (eighteen years ago) link

bottom line: i think cooking and food presentation are interesting. i also think photography is fun, and i want to get better at it, and (amateur) food photography is a relatively easy way to practice, esp. in low-light settings like restaurants.

i'm really honestly surprised that ilx has such deep-seated issues with looking at pictures of food. it says more about you guys than it does about me. sheesh, it's not like i'm not posting images of 13-year-old girls.

sigh.

i like your food pics. :=\

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I never said I didn't like them myself.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey I never had any problems with pictures of food as long as it isn't meat! I went to the store and got meself a nice raspberry chocolate tart thingy to which I added fat free whipped cream and thawed organic raspberries. I feel so happy now. And I haven't finished the damn wine yet.

Vinegar and Artichoke Hearts (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:40 (eighteen years ago) link

this all goes back to chris's july 4 photo thread from a few years ago. people didn't want to look at any pictures from that weekend that didn't include drunk ilxors making stupid faces.

My mom sent me a package of Omaha Steaks last week and that was what we made, along with oven-roasted potatoes that came out fantastic. They seem like good steaks, but the whole shipping meat through the mail thing is a little weird (even with dry ice) and a couple of them appeared to be slightly discolored.

We also bought a peach-raspberry pie from the new gourmet store in town which was great but a tad too sweet.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i've had omaha steaks. the filet mignons (filets mignon?) were pretty lifeless, but i remember the burgers being good.

Stephen, this was at Sound On Sound on North Loop. While Waterloo is likely to have a Bob Schneider instore the road bands and punk acts play at Sound on Sound.

JBR, I got tired of looking at pictures period. At least ones where people were in it were interesting but picture after picture of plates of food got really boring really fast. I'm not trying to be rude b/c, truly, switching images off has been one of my best ILX experiences ever. I enjoy this place so much more now that I can pick and choose my images.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, that's exactly how I'd describe the filet mignons we had -- good word for it. The ribeyes were tastier though.

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Earlier in the evening I did have a fun band practice though -- we wrote a kind of deliberate Talking Heads parody (which is very unlike us) that included the lyrics "Maybe I'll go downtown. Maybe I'll go downtown in my gym shorts."

Abbadabba Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:48 (eighteen years ago) link

see, i usually can't stand looking at drunken party photos. i find them incredibly obnoxious, everyone mugging for the camera and looking ghoulish. fapping is fun, hanging out with friends is fun, but... bleah. those pics are never ever flattering.

not that others shouldn't enjoy them, of course.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:53 (eighteen years ago) link

If you're not at the fap. . .I like seeing how people actually look.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:57 (eighteen years ago) link

i only drink when its flattering.

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:58 (eighteen years ago) link

otm! i always hate drunken party pics because i usually look like an asshole, as does everyone else.

tres letraj (tehresa), Sunday, 4 December 2005 06:59 (eighteen years ago) link

errr... i like looking at them when i'm not in them, sometimes.. but not if it's just people sprawled all over looking like idiots...

that's what the "what do you look like" threads are for.

i don't hate pictures of flowers on principle, but the ones most people take look like those paper inserts that come sold with picture frames. and don't even get me started on macros.

One other thing making my Saturday night less boring:

I agree with this, and the same comment can be compared with food pictures that look too much like the photos you see in menus at diners.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:19 (eighteen years ago) link

depends on the food. and on the lighting (which i'm still getting the hang of, i know).

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:25 (eighteen years ago) link

my camera suxors; no matter how much i play around with the manual flash settings and shutter speeds, it always just takes the same two pictures: the one that's too bright and the one that's too dark.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:31 (eighteen years ago) link

because you're using the flash?

if i didn't use it there'd be DARKNESS

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:34 (eighteen years ago) link

and i tend to not use the flash; i hate it.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:35 (eighteen years ago) link

not if you use a long exposure

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:36 (eighteen years ago) link

i have been, but it doesn't make much (enough) of a difference.

Wait, rice plus french fries?

Stir-fried french fries turns up often in Peruvian food along with rice at the same time.

I should have been in Monte Carlo (long story). Instead I went to see Harry Potter, went to a casino in Glasgow to kid on to myself that I was in Monte Carlo, came home, drank myself comatose and felt very sorry for myself indeed.

my Saturday night was god awful (as seen earlier in the thread), but tonight I had fun!

got off work and went to bar with beautiful girl who i kind of have a crush on but she's not interested in me (but whatever it's cool) and it was fun! then i went to her house and met her hot roommates and ate taco bell!

Mickey (modestmickey), Monday, 5 December 2005 07:13 (eighteen years ago) link

mine wasnt bad. spent the afternoon on the beach in miami. went to art basel and nada. overpriced seafood dinner with friends. then the visionaire magazine party at the setai, stumbled back to my room and slept.

After my usual semi-unplanned disco nap, left for the local bars just as the first snow of the winter began falling. At the gaybar, I dared to play the Dinosaur Jr "Just Like Heaven" cover which inspired a complaint to the bartender. (Like, I keep my mouth shut when it's nonstop Aimee Mann.) See, I alienate strangers even without the help of the internets.

Fortunately my Kirsty MacColl selection had an Elektra recording artist bouncing in her seat, so the night ended happily.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 5 December 2005 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

No, its jukebox somehow came up empty at 3:15 on Saturday night.

I ended up watching F is for Fake, which I had never seen, and I managed to convince myself that the Final Fake was going to be that the sexy lady WAS A MAN, BABY! This position ultimately became untenable.

if i didn't use it there'd be DARKNESS
I really love what you've done with your hair

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Not in my history. It's fun when the queens aren't bitchin' bout Dinosaur Jr. Thursday nights are pretty good.

Ken, I hope you didn't rent F for Fake from TLA, cuz it's out every time I ask!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:09 (eighteen years ago) link

The gaybar I was at last night was playing a club remix of Eamon's "I Don't Want You Back."
