Shall we anticpate the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

on The Internet people are saying how this is a huge plot inconsistency - i.e. how can skyler give walt a lecture about expensive champagne when she's ready to drop 800K in her own name on a car wash? but to my mind it just shows how skyler's greed is making her become as wilfully blind as walt is

yeah i read it as yet another example of what horrible criminals in over their heads those two are

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

the look on walt's face when he's enjoying the coffee from gale's rube goldberg machine: as it changes to a grim realization of what's happened to its creator, and then gets battened down into a hard mask of self-justification and determination to get to work - in an instant he moves towards the meth machines, flipping on the switches - is a perfect encapsulation of how walt has changed over these three.x seasons. and all told with no lines at all, just in his face and body! fuck

"how can skyler give walt a lecture about expensive champagne when she's ready to drop 800K in her own name on a car wash?"

Uh how about cuz she's still an enormous know-it-all nag?

Think this was my least favourite episode ever.

Number None, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

Some days on and people are really running with the notion that this is either going to get a 6-8 episode fifth and final season or at least a few more seasons on another network.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

I highly doubt that'll happen. AMC seems like dicks tho

I hope it doesn't go to HBO. Maybe lifetime would be good.

Jeff, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

Why is Walt being such a baby about the cameras? Does he really not expect to be watched?

well when they nail the formula hes a dead dude prob, so now he knows that he is constantly watched - camera makes it easy to dig in for details/rewatch the tape/etc

re: marie and purple - yeah they've painstakingly established that shes always wearing purple, which i took as sort of a obsessive signifier for her. imo the reason she isnt wearing purple at the open house is because shes "not marie". i think the depth of maries heavily controlled minor neuroses is only starting to get plumbed here.

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

they've already nailed the formula, haven't they? victor had it down cold. i figured walt was indispensable because he'd know what to do in case of any variation in material, humidity, whatever. i think he said something to this effect in e01.

But what if the infidilator percolates at 2 degrees below sub-optimal tinkering point? Meth making is all about improv.

If it goes to HBO I mean. Lifetime offers their programming on iTunes so that would be great.

At least they could say 'fuck' if it went HBO. Wouldn't affect me whatever, I'm stealing this stuff.

would mean more than just a fifth season, and i don't know if the show can creatively last longer than that.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, that wouldn't be good

Number None, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that's a fair point.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Wednesday, 3 August 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

IDK though, I do pretty much trust Gilligan to wrap it up at an appropriate time; he cares deeply about good storytelling, which is one of the main reasons the show is so good.

Another network's not going to pick it up if they only get one season though, is the thing

http://www.deadline.com/2011/08/breaking-bad-eying-two-season-final-run/

AMC has an offer on the table for a standard 13-episode fifth season but Sony is looking for more. People close to the matter expect the final deal to be for 13-20 episodes, possibly spread over 2 seasons. Besides pinning down the exact size of the order, a sticking point has been who will shoulder the production cost for Breaking Bad going forward. In TV, starting with Season 5, the network take over 100% of a show's production cost. In the early days of original series on basic cable, the networks didn't know quite how to handle the tricky Season 4-Season 5 transition financially and tended to cancel shows after four seasons, like Lifetime's Any Day Now. In the case of Breaking Bad, I hear AMC is asking Sony for some participation in the budget, which most recently was around $3.2 million an episode. AMC and Sony's previous license negotiation last year was also lengthy and difficult. But this time around, a renewal appeared a much easier proposition, given the series' double-digit ratings growth for the start of Season 4, including posting a series high with the season premiere. Additionally, the auxiliary market, where Breaking Bad had been far weaker than AMC's signature series Mad Men, also has picked up. Thanks in part to a savvy deal Sony made with Walmart, DVD sales for Season 3 went up double digits from Season 2, a rare feat for a series these says. And after it wraps a deal for the show, Sony has to also forge a new pact with Gilligan whose contract is also up after this season.

I'm not sure this holds really. That guy was watching Walt cook for ages and thought he could replicate it exactly but Gus was having none of it. It's a new chemist or nothing really.

Matt DC, Thursday, 4 August 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

But a new chemist who wouldn't have to work with Walt like Gus did to learn Walt's formula, so Walt wouldn't know this person was on deck and therefore not go kill this person.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Thursday, 4 August 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

Jesse was right at the diner -- if Gus had wanted to kill them, they would be dead. He does not want to kill them right now for a reason. If after that, Walt gets pissy and starts to flip off the cameras, it strikes me as more than a little ill-advised petulance. Just go about yr business, dude.

didn't know what to read into the "WW" lab notes business with Hank, but I felt some unspoken things going on there
are we supposed to think that hank knows? esp after the "quite a tale" comment too.

it was pleasant and delightful, just like (La Lechera), Monday, 8 August 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think Hank necessarily suspected Walter was WW. But he obviously noted the coincidence(s). Maybe he figured there was a one in 100 chance, so he just threw it out there to see how Walter would react. The Walt Whitman thing seemed to instantly put an end to any suspicions.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 8 August 2011 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

In. Fucking. Credible. This show now has more narrative momentum than any work of fiction I've ever witnessed, I think.

I say the Willie Nelson/pot leaf sticker cancels out the Ron P.

Gale is such a rad dude! A total dork, but w/e. That notebook was so amazing- beautiful handwriting, chinese ideograms sketched in the margins, finely rendered maps of his hiking trips, &c. And his apartment last season, such a nice&cozy place. I would totally hang out with my brother Gale.

The flashback where it reveals that Gale signs his own death certificate by basically insisting that Walt be brought in..so heartbreaking! Hands down the only nice person on this show- open, honest, genuinely curious about the world, kinda serves truth & science.. and they shoot that myan right in his fukken face. Love this show.
