that love confession scene was brutalllllllll

I'm still thinking about it today, it was crushing.

online pinata store (Nicole), Friday, 29 July 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

Thing is, I don't think it's that brutal. I feel like I've said those things and been shot down and ruined friendships that exact way at least a few times in my life. It just struck me as extremely realistic.

dan selzer, Friday, 29 July 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. verrrrry recognizable

max, Friday, 29 July 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

I also thought she did a great job of conveying the disappointment that someone can feel when the friend decides he/she has to take things to the next level. that kind of situation tends to suck for all involved. really loved this episode from start to finish.

rockapads, Friday, 29 July 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

that scene in the subway station was beautiful. perfect look of bewilderment on louie's face. i've had that feeling of being around crazy people in public and wondering if i'm the one going crazy.

loved the B&W fantasy of cleaning up the mess and being a hero

latebloomer, Friday, 29 July 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

really loved this episode from start to finish.

not to try to out-do all other praise but i thought this was one of the best things i've ever seen on tv, just front to back, it was so rich & complex & affecting in a million different ways

loved the B&W fantasy of cleaning up the mess and being a hero

even before that, & throughout, generally, it's such a beautiful looking show, & totally has the right 'look', but there's something really pleasing in a 'the biggest trainset a boy ever had' sense about louis doing his frustrated filmmaker thing of playing around with all this shit as part of the show - kind of stardust memories style in its genre straddling.

but yeah this was stunning!, the feelings scene particularly, but the chemistry of them both & the- you know, listening to the kids on the subway!, just because. so so great.

one of the best things i've ever seen on tv

right now

sitcom neighbor (schlump), Friday, 29 July 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

but there's something really pleasing in a 'the biggest trainset a boy ever had' sense about louis doing his frustrated filmmaker thing of playing around with all this shit as part of the show

yeah, definitely. it's really fun to see him take off on these little filmic flights of fancy.

latebloomer, Friday, 29 July 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

having followed him as a comic for a long time, I am so surprised at how artful this show is.

davon cuul II (m bison), Friday, 29 July 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

i first became aware of him with his short film tomorrow night, back in '98. it was making the rounds in nyc indie film circles and the guy i was dating got a screener copy of it.

apihopatcong weehawkul (get bent), Friday, 29 July 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i've gone backwards to his standup after knowing the show first and i think i actually prefer the show

i have lived this episode

so, so fuckin brutal and well written

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 29 July 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

He was loltastic on letterman

Mordy, Friday, 29 July 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

he was good on letterman but i couldn't get the louie episode out of my head. i didn't end up laughing that much at the letterman stuff because my guts had just been torn asunder.

apihopatcong weehawkul (get bent), Friday, 29 July 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

I recorded letterman and watched it the next day so v enjoyable

Mordy, Friday, 29 July 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

i kinda thought he was more otm than lol on letterman; the lions thing, re people texting on their phones, made me laugh a lot. & the teach a man to fish thing. thinking back on the episode, the last stand-up bit seems kinda huge for such a short thing - totally nails grandparent dynamics (the guy just squinting in his yard)

yeah, definitely. it's really fun to see him take off on these little filmic flights of fancy.

the interview stuff i've read around this show has sometimes drifted into him talking about that being a thing he's super invested in, how they have the actual-most-expensive lenses & how it's what he geeks out about. but it's looked great throughout; the slight bleariness of the one where he meets his neighbours, or the kinda blankness of the subway. & it's still exquisitely scored also.

sitcom neighbor (schlump), Friday, 29 July 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ that last bit, the jazz is another kinda woody allenish touch but it doesn't feel old timey or like self consciously retro

davon cuul II (m bison), Friday, 29 July 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

yeah more a mood thing, like some wistful beat up old lonesome trumpet

sitcom neighbor (schlump), Friday, 29 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

louis c.k. absolutely loves those athletic-style sweatshirts with the little triangle thing below the front of the collar.

del griffith, Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

watching commentary for season 1. the guy that plays his therapist is the "warriors! come out and play-ee-ay" guy.

Gukbe, Saturday, 30 July 2011 07:01 (fourteen years ago)

samantha's bf richard on sex and the city was the leader of the warriors, aka the actor james remar.

whoever gave me shit about Louis being the quintessential NYC show owes me an apology

i love the moment where they're both floored by how good the food is.
"i can't wait to eat the shit i take after i finish this" = all time furnace

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 July 2011 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

man, that speech he gave to her

fuck

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 July 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i almost wanna say this was next level even for this show. so good. and the grandparents bit at the end was hilarious.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 31 July 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

do you guys think they will marry off camera?

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

(real louie and real pamela i mean)

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

are they an irl thing?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

basically i don't think he's a good enough actor or having enough self-control to say those things to someone with the same name as the character, and also share a bed and show his winky to her in front of a studio audience without having that spill over in some way.

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:39 (fourteen years ago)

have no idea about this ^^ but, his acting is really great, now; little parts that i guess he's always done like 'snapping out of a daydream' on the subway are super convincing & effective. and yeah his declaration was so measured and you totally believed he just needed to get it all out one time. or trying to play it cool by being at the cool restaurant & not wanting to give that up.

sitcom neighbor (schlump), Sunday, 31 July 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

xp isn't pam adlon still married?

davon cuul II (m bison), Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

also share a bed and show his winky to her in front of a studio audience

haha wait what

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

it's from lucky louie, and you can see pamela breaking in the scene.
the backstory is they were pressuring pam to go nude since they were on cable and for some reason they were obligated to show full frontal, and louie thought that was so crass so he offered to take one for the team instead, so what gal's heart wouldn't melt from such chivalry?

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

who wouldn't break? it's not every day a non-porn guy just whips it out for a camera.

apihopatcong weehawkul (get bent), Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

who wouldn't break? maybe someone who wasn't his soul mate. like how nicole kidman didn't break in eyes wide shut.

Philip Nunez, Sunday, 31 July 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

what tangled dongs we weave

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 31 July 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

this might be the one thing that could make me not loathe dane cook

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

he looks like he's smuggling microfilm in his jaws

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

wonder if they'll deal with the "dane cook stole jokes from louis ck" thing

Clay, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

what if they reshot the opening sequence with cook walking down the street scarfing down pizza
going cookie-cookie-cookeeeee / cookie-cookie-cookeyeee
then todd barry goes, 'you suck dane cook you suck at comedy'
