same here, it was someone explaining that one of their parents said it

Grew up in Santa Cruz, so of course I've never ever heard that. Love the monologue about "If they brush their fucking teeth, and put on their goddamn pajamas, we get to read a book."
― schwantz, Monday, 25 July 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)
I heard it from my mom years ago when we were talking about the fact that what I believe are now called Licorice Bears (jelly black licorice candies) were called n babies when she was growing up. NB at 72 she's on "older" mom for someone my age but obv I was till shocked and it sparked a discussion about racist terms that were nbd when she was growing up during which she told me about the brazeil nuts thing.

recent reddit thread:
http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/ixbfg/til_that_brazil_nuts_were_also_called_nigger_toes/
looks like most of the people who use the n-toes phrase are 70+ years old.
― the table is the do the standing still (get bent), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)
Just to be clear - my mom doesn't actually use either that or the other thing for licorice bears I mentioned. She was just telling me about how when she was growing up those were "acceptable" terms.
― ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:03 (fourteen years ago)
my grandmother used n-toes without irony.
but then her racial politics made johnny rebel look like nelson mandella.
― apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
i need to ask my mom (in her mid 60s) if she ever heard it. she grew up in brooklyn and queens.
― the table is the do the standing still (get bent), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
I was going to say maybe it was also partly a regional thing. Mine grew up in Pittsburgh.
― ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
also n-babies but they were for black jellybeans.
― apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
it's becoming evident that this is something that white alterna-types really love talking about

stuff white people like: calling other white people out on what they "love talking about"
― the table is the do the standing still (get bent), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)
no one is calling anybody out, but ok
― ennui morricone (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)
This is a critically acclaimed television show that is also very good, so it is not surprising that people (white or otherwise) talk about it.
― polyphonic, Monday, 25 July 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)
i meant the n-toes thing
― ennui morricone (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
i dont really "like" talking about this but i do find it interesting that people around my age are probably among the last who will have been hearing this stuff as if it was no big deal while growing up, at least on a wide scale.
― apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)
and it totally ties into an episode of a tv show about the disconnect between generations irt racialized slang
― apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)
i almost forgot about those two sikh kids dressed in suits at the gas station. might be my favourite part.

he's doing stand up on i think leno tonight, as well as the ep, btw
― schlump, Friday, 29 July 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)
Just checked, and he's not on Leno tonight. It would be weird if he was, since he was just on in June.

That episode had more amazing NYC material and more amazing emotional relationship realness then the last 20+ Woody Allen movies. Totally amazing.

Thing is, I don't think it's that brutal. I feel like I've said those things and been shot down and ruined friendships that exact way at least a few times in my life. It just struck me as extremely realistic.
― dan selzer, Friday, 29 July 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)
yeah. verrrrry recognizable
― max, Friday, 29 July 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
I also thought she did a great job of conveying the disappointment that someone can feel when the friend decides he/she has to take things to the next level. that kind of situation tends to suck for all involved. really loved this episode from start to finish.
― rockapads, Friday, 29 July 2011 16:18 (fourteen years ago)
that scene in the subway station was beautiful. perfect look of bewilderment on louie's face. i've had that feeling of being around crazy people in public and wondering if i'm the one going crazy.
― apihopatcong weehawkul (get bent), Friday, 29 July 2011 17:19 (fourteen years ago)

really loved this episode from start to finish.
not to try to out-do all other praise but i thought this was one of the best things i've ever seen on tv, just front to back, it was so rich & complex & affecting in a million different ways
even before that, & throughout, generally, it's such a beautiful looking show, & totally has the right 'look', but there's something really pleasing in a 'the biggest trainset a boy ever had' sense about louis doing his frustrated filmmaker thing of playing around with all this shit as part of the show - kind of stardust memories style in its genre straddling.
but yeah this was stunning!, the feelings scene particularly, but the chemistry of them both & the- you know, listening to the kids on the subway!, just because. so so great.

yeah, definitely. it's really fun to see him take off on these little filmic flights of fancy.
