I've ordered a bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel from Binny's, which my very kind mother will pick up next week and bring back to the UK for me in a few weeks.

Binny's were very helpful indeed via email.

Now the long anticipation...

got a bottle of laphroaig quarter cask, haven't tried it yet. it's pretty strong at 48% so i'm thinking maybe i should water it a bit?

Thanks cad, I'm really looking forward to it immensely!

I initially ordered one of the Binny's own KC Single Barrels, but they're all sold out. I decided to go with the KC as I know I already love the standard Small Batch version, so, what with the positive word on it so far, I'm certain I'm going to love the Single Barrel, especially with its extra 120 proof kick! Very cheap as well for a UK-er.

anyone ever try the low budget single malts at trader joe's? (i guess this is a cali thing only?)

the speyburn "bradan orach" is pretty good at $14.99(!). light and smooth, B+

the lismore single malt is OK, some dispute if this is even a real single malt. it's a little harsh and metallic, not as good of a deal either at $16.99 B-

finlaggan is truly wretched, i mean i'm not really into islay but this tastes like lavoris. can't remember the price, probably $16.99 D- (good for pranking your guests i suppose)

was super regular on the Lagavalin for a long time & it got to be regular which was weird. Enjoying it again after some time away.

for those in N Bklyn, pro-tip pricewise: BQE Liqu0rs.

Aha. I thought either a joke or some horribly unfortunate mix-up - you'd be a bit upset to get home and discover that after shelling out...

it's terrible. my dad is a malört obsessive but i decided this year to stop trying.

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Monday, 25 July 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

"Most first-time drinkers of Jeppson Malort reject our liquor. Its strong, sharp taste is not for everyone. Our liquor is rugged and unrelenting (even brutal) to the palate. During almost 60 years of American distribution, we found only 1 out of 49 men will drink Jeppson Malort. During the lifetime of our founder, Carl Jeppson was apt to say, 'My Malort is produced for that unique group of drinkers who disdain light flavor or neutral spirits.'

It is not possible to forget our two-fisted liquor. The taste just lingers and lasts - seemingly forever. The first shot is hard to swallow! PERSERVERE [sic]. Make it past two 'shock-glasses' and with the third you could be ours...forever"[1]

OTM, most people I know who swear by the stuff are into it for the total lowbrow awfulness.

Banker's Club whiskey is the goregrind, the torture porn, the ball peen to the nuts of alcohol. Do you dare?

Picked up Russell's Reserve 6 yr rye. Pretty good! Smooth for a rye, at 90 proof

It's ok. Not super sophisticated but has a lot of flavour. Going through a bottle of it at the moment when i'm not in the mood for a malt.

Slice Me Nice (ShariVari), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Patrick Bateman's drink of choice as well.

just call me brian (krakow), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

haha

Famous drinkers

It is Patrick Bateman's favourite drink in American Psycho in both the film and the novel.[1] It was Truman Capote's favourite drink: his particular eccentricity was to use its full name of "Justerini & Brooks" when requesting it at a store. If the clerk did not know what he meant he would take his business elsewhere. J&B is also notable as being Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy's favorite drink which he drank in prison in order to complete a test in which investigators were going to determine if an intoxicated Gacy was the reasoning for his murders.

I like Jameson but my friend from Boston chastises me for "drinking Catholic"

jameson is also pretty good tbh, no shame in it.

so decidedly not a catholic drink rly

also in kate hopkins' 99 drams of whiskey she tours bushmills and they're using their bottling line to bottle jameson's per some outsourcing arrangement

I actually get annoyed at people saying the "protestant whiskey" thing now. Well done, you've watched The Wire.

Bateman probably picked it up from Gacy in that case.

report?

plain ol' Beam for me atm

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

I found the alcohol kick (it is 60% abv, 120 proof) quite hard to get past on my first try, as that extra strength is something I'm not used to. I've been feeling too tired recently to really try it properly yet, but will report back when I do so...

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

i'm most of the way through my bottle. i've been mixing it in a 3:1 ratio with good spring water (that gets it down to 90 proof) and it's still kind of a fatiguing whiskey even tho i like it.
