when I wake up I see my self bearfooted (clotpoll), Friday, 19 December 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

buses ran well from the u district to the ridge this evening: 20 minute wait for the first bus, 5 minute wait at the transfer. home in an hour, which isn't unheard of even on the nicest days. thank you, metro drivers!

lol @ reposting a weather report, but man this doesn't sound like it'll be fun

http://www.komonews.com/weather
That sets up our next challenge -- a big storm heading in Saturday night and into Sunday. Now, I know we've tossed a lot at you this week, and many people have gone through a lot. But sorry to say, this storm also looks like it could have a profound impact on the region with several events -- including the potential of a major windstorm in the Cascade foothills, and a big mess of snow and freezing rain in the lowlands.

This storm is coming in from the west, and it looks pretty wet -- and warm. Second, we'll not only have some arctic air here in Western Washington, but even more in Eastern Washington. That air is very dense, and thus has higher pressure.

As the low pressure of the storm approaches, forecasting models are hinting now that we could see some very strong, gusty east winds in the passes to the usual North Bend, Enumclaw, Gold Bar east-windy places. But now forecasting models paint a much stronger wind -- perhaps sustained east winds as high as 50-60 mph with gusts reaching as high as 70-90 mph. Now, that's an initial estimate, subject to change, but we need to raise the red flag now. A HIGH WIND WATCH is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.

Aside from strong winds, we'll be putting a lot of moisture on top of a very cold air mass. This could bring a period of widespread heavy snow to the entire region Saturday evening and night. We could see 4-8" again as a general rule across all the lowlands, but areas over along the Hood Canal and eastern Olympic Peninsula area could see 6-12" of snow.

Hooray. It was like 2 degrees yesterday and I realized exactly how non-insulated our house is.

Hell, it will be all ice tomorrow. I made it into work for a few hours today before they closed the office. Got a lot done, actually, though. Was lucky to get a ride home with a coworker who lives nearby.

Drunk now and not looking forward to ICE TOMORROW. I might just refuse to go in, cause if what I went through with the buses today is even a fraction of what it will be like tomorrow????? ICE ANYONE HELLO??????????????????

The uphill side of Washington St is a sheet of ice already - tried to get a photo of a jack-knifed flexer that was blocking the fire trucks being able to get out, but the tow truck got there too fast.

I walked from Capitol Hill to South Lake Union, expecting to walk home to Fremont, but I saw a 28 bus creep around the corner just as I got to Denny & Westlake. This would be normal, except the 28 bus normally runs on Dexter, several blocks north. I got on, and driver looking really tired and exasperated told me "I'm on REROUTE. Let me know where you want off". ME: "Uh, Fremont. just south of the bridge" DRIVER: "You got it"... chug chug chug chug.. DRIVER: "Here. Be careful". ME: "You are awesome!"

It's like Miracle On 34th St. meets The Stand out there.. weirded out, yet sorta happy, drunk people walking literally in the middle of the street while cars are either abandoned and covered in snow and icicles, or the few working cars try to drive, while everyone moves well away from them, only to hear a screech and bump in the distance when the car zips past. The buses look like they're there to pick up the bodies.

I understand the frustration with the slow and delayed Metro buses, but I think they create all this frustration so that they don't possibly end up HANGING OVER A FUCKING INTERSTATE.

Granted, Metro buses still haven't figured out the how-to-avoid-falling-off-after-the-driver-gets-shot thing re: the Aurora Bridge incident of 2000(?)

usic concrète (The Reverend), Friday, 19 December 2008 22:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Charter buses seem to get lost/stranded on the narrow streets of Capitol Hill all the time. I think these guys found Denny (arterial to I-5) closed and tried find an alt route(there isn't one!).

the higgs, Friday, 19 December 2008 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

OMG, yikes!! What are those bus drivers thinking?? (besides OH SHIT!)

I drove over to Redmond this morning for interviews - I-405 was a sheet of ice most places. Harrowing, but everyone was crawling along. Coming back to town this afternoon, people were thinking it was thawed or something and driving like bats outta hell - a million times worse.

Jaq, Friday, 19 December 2008 23:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I've biked down Thomas before, seems like it would be kind of hairy in a bus even without ice.

From the Seattle times

NEW - 12:37 PM

Storm rolls in; 75 mph winds predicted

Those living in the Seattle area and west of Interstate 5 will get the brunt of the snow with 3-8 inches, while those east of the interstate face treacherous winds.

lol i like the concept that it will only snow in Fremont and South Lake Union, but cross I-5 on Denny Way, and then snow instantly becomes wind.

"Sustainability Sucks" T's Ahoy For Urban Outfitters Bootches (Mackro Mackro), Saturday, 20 December 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, u district, not to worry! you'll be fine!

jergins, Saturday, 20 December 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

The way that's phrased, I think it's supposed to imply that the I-5 division carries for those outside of the Seattle area, whereas if you are in the Seattle area, you are getting snowed on, no buts about it.

super ws bros (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 December 2008 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Poorly phrased, either way.

super ws bros (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 December 2008 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

it's lolfully phrased

We're getting dainty little snow in Fremont right now.

Well, so far, in Fremont, a consistent light dusting still.

The surprise will be waking up tomorrow morning.

I'm going to guess 2 inches overnight. I doubt it's going to be the 7-8 inches they've been saying all day.

Walking to Fremont tomorrow.

WTF will all the panic buying in Seattle proper?

I can understand that being the case in east King Co, Snoho Co., etc.

but why is the BALLARD Fred Meyer a panic zone? Dudes, just go walk to Cupcake Royale or some shit, you'll survive!

Still waiting for it to start in Point Roberts/Bellingham/Vancouver...

We've had another inch or so added to what was left of the original 3-4" in the last 6 hours. It's coming down more heavily now and doesn't look like it will be stopping tonight. No winds to speak of yet, though apparently North Bend is getting gusts around 50 mph.

Jaq, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:33 (fifteen years ago) link

mayor said 1 am was the time we'd see the highest winds in the city. said that about six.
