And he's still angry about how rich his ex and former partner got on chemistry … things that he helped develop (I realize I don't know what the thing actually is) plus the never ending resentment that comes from being a Nobel Prize winning chemist barely making a living teaching brain dead highschool kids (or probably worse for Walt - smart kids with a lifetime of potential in front of them that Walt believes he no longer has). I mean, in the first ep he looks at that Nobel plaque and you can see he's thinking of himself as a hapless victim of cruel fate, which I think provides him with a lot of justification for his actions. Later we find out, as sic said, that a lot of Walt's situation at the start was his own doing because he's kind of an jerk.

Didn't go into specifics, but the gist was clear. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a couple more flashback scenes before the show's done, as long as they don't over-egg it that's cool.

But I want to know how a brilliant chemist got stuck teaching public high school chemistry. You'd think he could at least land a magnet school or something. Anyway, that goes back to my "he's always been a jerk" thing, which actually lessons the story arc a little, unless you find the jerk to super-jerk transformation compelling. I mean, I love this show, it's hyper-enjoyable, but there always seemed to be something more malevolent than mere mid-life crisis at work.

TBF, he went from jerky okay dude to murderer, which is something beyond superjerk.

I dunno I think y'all are letting later events coloring yr perception of walt maybe? he's a tightly wound, testy individual in the first season but it def shows him in a more heroic light (defending his kid in the clothing store, agonizing over killing the meth dealer)

I always thought the defense of the kid was hardly honorable, more an explosion of his pent of rage and anger. And don't forget, killing that tied up drug dealer came after he a) already killed one of them, b) tried to kill the other one at the same time and c) devised a way to dissolve the dead guy in a bathtub, then cleaned up the gloppy mess. Sure, he hemmed and hawed, but if anything that was out of character. The broken plate thing just made the decision easier for Walt.

Short: my wife and I sort of like the show *because* he's been a dick from the start. There's really not much sympathy for him at all, just the wonder at how far he'll go to feed his pride/greed.

Eastbound and Down does this too and I'm starting to connect the two as similar shows.

Walter was always kind of a jerk, but they really do a lot of get you to sympathize with him in the pilot - I mean, crippled kid, shitty job, shittier second job to make ends meet while he has another kid on the way (most likely an accident, too, considering the age gap), plus cancer. And that birthday handjob... you can see pretty early why he's so bitter, considering his pridefulness. Of course, he still turns out to be a horrible person at the core, anyway.

you still root for him, though, don't you? i do. not necessarily to "succeed" at his plans, but to realize what the hell he's doing, put right the wrongs, tie things up and get the hell out of meth making. if i weren't hoping he'd do these things then i don't know why i'd even watch, despite all the great acting, etc.

At this point, Walter White could do anything and I would continue to support his cause. In fact, his evolution has been so deft that I feel weird describing his persona as "evil," even though I can't justify why it would be incorrect to do so.

He's not evil, he's smug and arrogant, almost ubermensch-y. He's above it all morally in a very uncomfortable way. Plus the show gives no indication he's interested in getting out of the meth game at all. Per the aforementioned, he's so arrogant he believes he's the one guy smart enough to get away with it all.

endgame is him being killed and a big insurance check going to his fam iirc

season 4: Walt kills chicken guy and takes over the southwest.

season 5: A mysterious man who also claims to be Heisenberg starts recruiting soldiers to take Walt's territory. Walt assumes Jesse is behind it and he kills him. Ends in a bloodbath and Hank has to shoot Walt from his wheelchair.

Final scene: Walt Jr visits his mother in prison. He tells her he loves her, and swears he'll never stop fighting to get her out. He leaves the facility. We see a shot of the sidewalk and one crutch hits the ground, then another. Pan up to see Walt Jr. putting on the black Heisenberg hat, lighting a cigarette, and hopping into a pimped out Aztek. FIN

I d/led this so I took note of how long it was from Gus's entrance to exit from the lab - ten full minutes. (Amazing sequence - rest of the ep was just OK.)

I thought it was a masterpiece. The Gus scene nearly induced a panic attack, everyone involved nailed it 100%. The rest of the ep was totally built around that scene in terms of pacing. My god, what a show.

Also great work form Anna Gunn this week.

A+ 100% I think we're really getting into some next level tv over the next few months. Thank god this how is back. So perfect and so effortless.
