And he's still angry about how rich his ex and former partner got on chemistry … things that he helped develop (I realize I don't know what the thing actually is) plus the never ending resentment that comes from being a Nobel Prize winning chemist barely making a living teaching brain dead highschool kids (or probably worse for Walt - smart kids with a lifetime of potential in front of them that Walt believes he no longer has). I mean, in the first ep he looks at that Nobel plaque and you can see he's thinking of himself as a hapless victim of cruel fate, which I think provides him with a lot of justification for his actions. Later we find out, as sic said, that a lot of Walt's situation at the start was his own doing because he's kind of an jerk.

Also, y'all OTM about Skyler.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:50 (fourteen years ago)

the other thing about Walt choosing not to act re gothy hottie is that his initial hesitation isn't a calculated "hey if she dies that's good for me getting Jesse back"

everything walt does is a calculation, that's why in street crime he's a viking

duke of irl (Edward III), Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Sooner or later I hope we find out how once brilliant Walt ended up a depressed, poor high school teacher moonlighting as a car wash attendant.

I thought this got addressed during the whole story arc with his ex, walt's stupid pride got in the way

duke of irl (Edward III), Thursday, 14 July 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

Yes.

Didn't go into specifics, but the gist was clear. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a couple more flashback scenes before the show's done, as long as they don't over-egg it that's cool.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

But I want to know how a brilliant chemist got stuck teaching public high school chemistry. You'd think he could at least land a magnet school or something. Anyway, that goes back to my "he's always been a jerk" thing, which actually lessons the story arc a little, unless you find the jerk to super-jerk transformation compelling. I mean, I love this show, it's hyper-enjoyable, but there always seemed to be something more malevolent than mere mid-life crisis at work.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

he ended up there cos of his own boorish negativity, fear, etc...there are hundreds of depressiong reasons why his ability wouldn't matter.

LocalGarda, Thursday, 14 July 2011 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

TBF, he went from jerky okay dude to murderer, which is something beyond superjerk.

ilx poster and keen dairy observer (Jenny), Thursday, 14 July 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

killing people is pretty jerky.

karma's ruthless invisible (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 July 2011 05:11 (fourteen years ago)

This jerk was just jonesin' for an excuse to kill someone.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno I think y'all are letting later events coloring yr perception of walt maybe? he's a tightly wound, testy individual in the first season but it def shows him in a more heroic light (defending his kid in the clothing store, agonizing over killing the meth dealer)

by the end of s3 tho you are like f this guy

duke of irl (Edward III), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

still think he would have defended his kid in S3, tho he probably would have run the dudes over in his Aztec.

steady yachting (Pillbox), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

lol

duke of irl (Edward III), Friday, 15 July 2011 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

Oh that heroic guy, agonizing while bike locking someone.

Jeff, Friday, 15 July 2011 13:54 (fourteen years ago)

maybe I need to watch that eps again myself but isn't it 45 minutes of walt hemming & hawing until he figures out the guy has armed himself?

duke of irl (Edward III), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

yes

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 15 July 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

I always thought the defense of the kid was hardly honorable, more an explosion of his pent of rage and anger. And don't forget, killing that tied up drug dealer came after he a) already killed one of them, b) tried to kill the other one at the same time and c) devised a way to dissolve the dead guy in a bathtub, then cleaned up the gloppy mess. Sure, he hemmed and hawed, but if anything that was out of character. The broken plate thing just made the decision easier for Walt.

Short: my wife and I sort of like the show *because* he's been a dick from the start. There's really not much sympathy for him at all, just the wonder at how far he'll go to feed his pride/greed.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 15 July 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

Eastbound and Down does this too and I'm starting to connect the two as similar shows.

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 16 July 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

Walter was always kind of a jerk, but they really do a lot of get you to sympathize with him in the pilot - I mean, crippled kid, shitty job, shittier second job to make ends meet while he has another kid on the way (most likely an accident, too, considering the age gap), plus cancer. And that birthday handjob... you can see pretty early why he's so bitter, considering his pridefulness. Of course, he still turns out to be a horrible person at the core, anyway.

Nhex, Saturday, 16 July 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

you still root for him, though, don't you? i do. not necessarily to "succeed" at his plans, but to realize what the hell he's doing, put right the wrongs, tie things up and get the hell out of meth making. if i weren't hoping he'd do these things then i don't know why i'd even watch, despite all the great acting, etc.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6763000/bad-decisions

At this point, Walter White could do anything and I would continue to support his cause. In fact, his evolution has been so deft that I feel weird describing his persona as "evil," even though I can't justify why it would be incorrect to do so.

caek, Saturday, 16 July 2011 22:36 (fourteen years ago)

He's not evil, he's smug and arrogant, almost ubermensch-y. He's above it all morally in a very uncomfortable way. Plus the show gives no indication he's interested in getting out of the meth game at all. Per the aforementioned, he's so arrogant he believes he's the one guy smart enough to get away with it all.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 16 July 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

tracer otm. I don't know what his endgame is but I want him to get there.

calstars, Sunday, 17 July 2011 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

endgame is him being killed and a big insurance check going to his fam iirc

generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 17 July 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)

season 4: Walt kills chicken guy and takes over the southwest.

season 5: A mysterious man who also claims to be Heisenberg starts recruiting soldiers to take Walt's territory. Walt assumes Jesse is behind it and he kills him. Ends in a bloodbath and Hank has to shoot Walt from his wheelchair.

Final scene: Walt Jr visits his mother in prison. He tells her he loves her, and swears he'll never stop fighting to get her out. He leaves the facility. We see a shot of the sidewalk and one crutch hits the ground, then another. Pan up to see Walt Jr. putting on the black Heisenberg hat, lighting a cigarette, and hopping into a pimped out Aztek. FIN

have they written out the hispanic guy who drove walt to the plant at the end of s3? maybe he's just not big enough to appear on the poster.

I d/led this so I took note of how long it was from Gus's entrance to exit from the lab - ten full minutes. (Amazing sequence - rest of the ep was just OK.)

THIS IS SATIRE BTW (Simon H.), Monday, 18 July 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

I thought it was a masterpiece. The Gus scene nearly induced a panic attack, everyone involved nailed it 100%. The rest of the ep was totally built around that scene in terms of pacing. My god, what a show.
