Fun with Firefox

just me or is firefox increasingly refusing to take "no" for an answer when it wants to upgrade?

i did force it by doing 'about, check for updates' and was given the option (and warned that 2 plugins would be disbaled). then it installed and disabled 4...

(this is my 'only for games' windows partition so i don't really care)

but yes, when there are major security updates it is kinda forced.

i swear to god i never said "yes" to firefox 5 but then it just went ahead and did it anyway. fuck you, firefox.

It keeps chucking errors at me "COULD NOT PERFORM THE UPDATE" like I care.

I'm still on 3.6.2. You all scared me.

6 ? Doesn't this look like they're skipping a couple and are building towards 8.0 ?

Grrr, I'm wondering if the 5.0 is messing with my SwiftTabs plugin -- sometimes takes multiple presses of my designated tab navigating keys, and sometimes doesn't work at all!

Now Firefox wants me to update to 6.0???

according to slashdot yesterday they are soon doing away with version numbers. you will then be 'up to date' or not.

if they can do it in the background, fuck yeah.

I went from 3 to 5 and liked the upgrade except that about 50% of the time when I open FF after my computer has been off, it freezes and I have to force it to close an reopen it.

With 5 I went crazy with extensions. My faves: YouTube downloader, Boomerrang (Gmail snoozer and more), imgur, Last Pass.

ff has become so unstable and crashy i only use it when i have to (which is all the time for development work since firebug for chrome is still shitty and ie8 developer tools is fucking useless)

installed 6.

do you want to reboot to finish installation? no, not really.

try to run firefox and got "you must reboot to finish installation". so why was it an option?

oh, btw, 2 of your add ons no longer work.

and your flash needs updating. here's a handy link. but the installation won't work whilst firefox is still running...

Anyone use the add-on checking thing? I just installed it. We'll see if um up to the challenge.

not bothered to check tech sites, but flash in firefox has been *really* unstable since I got 6, must have updated it about four times in the last two weeks.

it's silently disabled another 2 add ons (Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper and Modify Headers)...

and re-enabled acrobat and silverlight...

seriously, i'd recommend you hold off updating for a week or so and give the plugin developers a chance to update.

Also, is this where we rep for add-ons? B/c I want to say: Boomerang is awesome. It's an app for Gmail that lets you snooze, schedule sending, and other stuff. I've been bitching about wanting something like that forever! And it's been around for quite a while, I just didn't know.

I ran a Gmail script that enables snoozing, but it's clunky and not very versatile.

What the hell? I'm using 6 now but I don't remember upgrading. Maybe I agreed to the upgrade by absent-mindedly clicking something, but I really do not recall being asked.

I didn't like the tabs above the address bar thing that FF5 did so I changed it, and now that I've changed it again in FF6 I'm being left irrationally angry / uneasy by the lack of distinction between the bottom of the tabs and the beginning of the web page itself. Not that I can remember what it was like before.

I liked 5 because of some bells and whistles, but I can't remember what those were.

I'm pretty skeptical of 6 so far because 1. Gmail was always https, but not it's not. I don't know if it's b/c of FF 6, but I wonder.

2. The URLs shown in the address bar are messed up. For example, I can be on ILX, then use the Google search tool to find look up "hedgehog gifs" and the URL stays at the last ILX URL even as I click more and more links.

My Gmail is https but the padlocky thingo in the FF5 address bar isn't there. Not great.

i would suggest the https everywhere extension and perhaps resetting yr bookmark to go to https gmail?

i still love firefox because with its extensions i can set it up exactly the way i like it, and while some add-ons have fallen by the wayside, other better ones have largely risen to fill their places.

that said, i don't understand this accelerated versioning --> no versioning at all, which sounds like bs. fucking tell me what the changes are.

ubuntu upgraded the other day to 3.5.something... (i think, maybe 3.6) its the Long Term Support version so i guess it's playing safe

Firefox 6 and up don't display an actual padlock graphic when the page is on https.

and hasn't the padlock thing been replaced with the extended favicon thing next to the url bar? if you mouseover it'll tell you 'verified by whatever'. mine is.

Yeah sorry, that's what I meant, the little coloured bar thingo (I was lazy/walk-posting and cbf doing the extra words). That coloured bar thingo doesn't show up for me in Gmail, despite 'https' being in the URL.

Modify Headers is working now

apparently staying on versions 5 or 4 is bad. for security reasons if u don't want 6.0 u should go back to 3.6.

If I open a new window and type in the https address for Gmail, it redirects to http. WTF. It simply will not go to https.

Also, the URLs are still fucked up. I'm on FB, but even I can go to my profile, messages, pictures, etc. and the URL remains: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taking_Tiger_Mountain_(By_Strategy). Which, now that I think of it, really doesn't make sense b/c, how did I get to FB from Wiki-p?

Anyway, these quirks makes me dubious of the whole version. Not good.

Update: clicking a Mail To link opens a new Gmail message in https. But it still won't open my Gmail account in https. Weird shit.

It is! I checked that. It is working in IE. And I have rebooted a couple times since yesterday.
I'm not even really worried about the connection not being secure (should I be?) as much as I'm annoyed that FF is FF-ing me.

have u tried clearing cache/deleting cookies?

there's an interesting plugin that I use that converts FF to IE (for pages that can only load in IE)

but I don't know why https://gmail.com wouldn't load in FF. works fine on the old versions
maybe you accidentally blocked it on noscript? i dunno

I clear the cache regularly (this laptop is old as hell and going through Google Reader makes FF bog down, and clearing the cache fixes that problem), but not cookies.

BUT! it seems like typing in "https," which I tried before, without success, worked this time. So: tentative hoorah!

I am going to clear cookies.

Maybe that will take care of that URL problem. The word "cookies" made me want one, so I'm going to clear my cache and cookies while I go to Potbelly to get a sandwich and a cookie.
