dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Jeezum Crowe, Elvis, where in blazes were you yesterday when i was almost fed to the kennel by these frothingly mad-dog-loving zealots?

I posted yesterday!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

+ like i was invisible all yesterday or soemthing. hmph.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, dyson. I didn't mean to cut you out of the circle of persecution there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Solange to thread.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I sort of had your back to Alex!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU were being persecuted? Yeah, okay.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

No shit. And don't you just love it when someone attacks something about you, you respond, and they say "jeez why are you so defensive?"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, well, I guess we all do it, so yeah um, the original question was answered and we're all happy fun time super blammo yay now, right?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry Luna, it's because Alex thinks pit bulls are robots.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU were being persecuted? Yeah, okay.

Please invest in a sense of humor, Luna.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think there are interesting meta type questions, but I'm satisfied that ILX pit-bull lovers have good reasons for owning their safe/cute dogs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shut the fuck up Alex. Like you're one to talk.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Please invest in a sense of humor, Luna.

If you were funny, I'd laugh.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you really think I seriously meant the term "circle of persecution" seriously? Come on now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I don't know you well enough to tell, honestly. I just have to go by what I read. If I misjudged, I'm sorry.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Huggy Dork (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

See, now if I was really a big, devil-advocating jackass, I'd post a "more WOUNDS!" pic. But, I'm going to take the high road. This time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

then post something that is violently cuter, instead.

Huggy Dork (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

No one needs to see more Jaz Coleman pictures, don't encourage him.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

But Jaz with puppies? THAT'D be something to see!

Huggy Dork (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that a dare?

Well, it ain't Jaz, but here's Raven from Killing Joke with some of his pit bulls....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

a three string AND a five string?

Huggy Dork (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

A silly shot, indeed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly haven't seen many people's reasons for *getting* one on this thread. There have been plenty of "but *my* pitbull is nice and gentle and cute!" responses, but that's more to do with why you like them (or like the one that you have, at least) than why you got one in the first place. I'm appalled at people who train dogs to be vicious, but I'm a bit suspicious of the type of pet owner (not anyone in here, I don't think) who wants to *prove* something ("see, pitbulls are great and kind!") -- isn't that kind of a silly reason to get a pet?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

shoker¡
alex: torn between his love of killing joke and his hatered of pit-bulls.

booo, x-post

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

torn between his love of killing joke and his hatered of pit-bulls.

:::sigh::

I don't hate pit-bulls.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes it is Clarke. Did anyone here say that was why they got one or did I miss something? Several owners here DID say they bought them because they were "nice and gentle and cute". The dogs didn't become that way after they were bought/selected, but rather possessed those attributes from the moment the owner laid eyes upon them. I mean what else do you want besides "MY pit is cute and friendly". You go on a thread and make sweeping generalizations and people criticize you for it. Here, people were sticking to their personal experiences, and yet you have found a way to fault them for it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The 'you' in that penultimate sentence is a general 'you' of course.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The crap people get for making generalizations on other threads has a lot to do with assuming their particular aesthetic evaluations are universal, whereas the pitbull issue is more of a society-as-a-whole thing, insofar as there are public attacks, etc. (Not that this is exclusive to pitbulls, though, obviously.)

Clarke B., Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How many 'public attacks' by pitbulls are there really? By 'public attacks' I assume you are only referring to a dog attacking a complete stranger in a public space, ie while out for a walk. I have never heard of any such attack. And if there have been some, that doesn't necessarily mean that pits are any more dangerous than other breeds. So does anyone here have any experience with pitbulls going crazy and biting people?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, I think dyson did!

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a horse involved. Pits are known to be aggressive towards dogs and other animals.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, I think those part-wolf dogs are WAY more unpredictable and dangerous than your average pit.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

you've confused dyson's and gygax!'s stories.

hstencil, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I *got* one because it was at the pound, was a little tiny baby puppy, and I wanted a dog. Also, he was adorable. I got the second because owning the first one proved to me that many misconceptions of them were just that - misconceptions, and being around Zero all day had relieved many of my own misgivings about owning a pit mix. I watched that dog like a hawk from the moment he was first around my son, and the most aggressive thing that has ever happened between the two of them is that Zero sometimes wagged his tail so hard that it knocked Spencer over. Zoe is a big lovebug, and the worst she has ever done is licked someone until they were positively covered in dog spit. I consider myself pretty lucky to have found two great dogs.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah so I have.
(xpost)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Public dog attacks: back a-aways up on thread there was a link to stats on fatal attacks- about 12 a year for the past 36 years-

Location of Attack
25% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by chained dogs
25% resulted from dogs loose in their yard
23% occurred inside the home
17% resulted from attacks by dogs roaming off their property
10% involved leashed dogs or miscellaneous circumstances

-and all but 9% were on toddlers or elderly people.

Of course that doesn't mention bites which are surely much more frequent.

sucka (sucka), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

you know what I don't get are boxer dogs. How can they have such grotesque squooshed faces and be so cute?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 January 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
I just watched a documentary about dog fighting in Chicago, and it made the point that the cause of some pitbulls ultra-aggressiveness is their owners, not something inherent to the breed. Pits on average score 83% on temperment tests, whereas the average across all breeds is 80%. These poor dogs are treated so horribly by those who are supposed to be caring for them that demonizing the dogs seems like rubbing salt in their wounds and a form of blaming the victim. I don't understand how someone could blame an animal for an attack when from birth that animal has been abused, denied any socialization, and trained to attack anything that moves.
